Athletics Could Trade Clippard As Early As Monday

By charliewilmoth | July 26, 2015 at 10:50pm CDT

Tyler Clippard, and not Ben Zobrist, seems likely to be the next Athletics player to be traded, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes. That deal could take place soon, perhaps on Monday, with a Zobrist trade coming later. It’s unclear who the Athletics’ trade partner for Clippard will be, although Slusser lists the Nationals, Mets and Yankees as candidates. Clippard has been linked to all three teams in recent reports.

Clippard has posted a 2.79 ERA, 8.8 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 in his first season in Oakland. He also has 17 saves, although many potential trade partners would likely use him in a setup capacity anyway. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in 2003 and made his big-league debut with them four years later, and he spent the next seven years pitching in the Nationals bullpen.

Would love to see the Dodgers get Clippard. Would be the perfect set up guy for Jansen.

And if Paco ever gets healthy and Yimi finds his early season form and with Baez throwing cheese the bullpen could be a real strength

I think getting Clippard takes pressure off of Howell, too. Howell really is best used against mainly left-handers. The Dodgers could use him in that role and Clippard as the primary set up guy.

This will me a great piece for the Mets pen. Mets got some solid mid level prospects to get it done.

I can see the Mets dealing a Marcos Molina or Gabriel Ynoa for Clippard. I think the Mets got better prospects to offer. The Mets farm system isn’t ranked 4th in mlb without a reason. Hope Sandy gets this done.

Mets makes sense as a trade partner. The guys you mentioned are blocked to make the Mets starting rotation, and I think that Clippard would fit in nicely in the pen as a setup guy.

He was forced to be a closer due to injuries and did adequately well. Better as a setup guy though I’m sure.

Turning into a lost season for the A’s, so trade deadline is my ‘Christmas in July’ waiting to see what Uncle Billy has for us under the tree…

Dave…it’s too late to fix the bullpen now. These same teams that want Clippard would consider Soria as well. Get on the phone. Start the sale. It’s time.
