Cafardo On Mariners, Pirates, Zobrist

By Zachary Links | July 12, 2015 at 11:40am CDT

In today’s column, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe looked at five teams that need to make a move before the trade deadline.  That list includes the Mets, who have pitching they can trade for hitting.  The most obvious fit for them would be Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, but Cafardo also mentions teammate Carlos Gonzalez as well as A’s hitters Josh Reddick and Steven Vogt.  As always, Cafardo’s entire column is worth a read, but we also compiled a handful of highlights below..

  • The Mariners continue to consider Phillies outfielder Ben Revere as the deadline approaches, Cafardo hears from a major league source.  The M’s need a leadoff hitter and while his slash of .294/.335/.377 doesn’t make him the ideal guy for that, Revere does have 21 steals on the year.  Earlier today we learned that the Pirates also have their eye on Revere.  However, it’s worth noting that Revere is also dealing with hamstring issues at the moment and that could delay a possible trade.
  • The Pirates recently watched Marlins right-hander Dan Haren pitch at Fenway Park.  Haren has been mentioned quite a bit as a trade candidate and while he made demands in the offseason, he has now settled into the fact that he might get moved.
  • Speaking of the Marlins, former closer Steve Cishek is drawing interest despite his difficult season and mechanical issues. The Twins, Tigers, Blue Jays, Red Sox, and other clubs have been keeping an eye on the 29-year-old.
  • Now that Marlins first baseman/outfielder Michael Morse is healthy once again, Cafardo wonders if teams like the Mets, Pirates, Nationals, and Royals could come calling.  A team acquiring Morse would have to pay the rest of his $7.5MM salary for 2015 and his $8.5MM salary next season, but Cafardo hears that he is in fact being scouted by clubs. Recently, MLBTR’s Charlie Wilmoth ran down the Marlins’ possible trade chips, including Haren and Cishek.
  • The Mets, Yankees, Giants, and Nationals are among the teams with interest in A’s outfielder/infielder Ben Zobrist.  Zobrist has played in left field, second base, and right field this season and Cafardo notes that he could also play third base if needed, despite having only four career games there.
  • One AL exec tells Cafardo that he thinks the Tigers could listen on David Price.  “It bears watching,” said the executive. “I don’t think he’s going back there. The Tigers need to revamp their farm system, so it’s not cut and dried that they won’t entertain a package for him.” Cafardo, however, doesn’t see Price going anywhere.  He envisions Detroit possibly adding a starter.

I’m not sure the Yankees need to be buyers at the deadline, they are almost back to full strength. I can see the Mets or Nats going after Zobrist. If Price becomes available I could see the Yanks in the mix, he has pitched in the AL East.

The AL East? You mean the worst division in baseball? (OK, an exaggeration, but still, there is no need for AL East teams to restrict themselves to players that have “proven” themselves in that particular division.)

Zobrist of last year would have been a good upgrade, not sure he is the this year. I’m all in on Refsnyder!

Refsnyder should be kept in the organization but that’s like me saying Severino’s better than Price. Prospects have Major League potential. Established Major Leaguers have already performed. It’s almost certain that Zobrist is better than Refsnyder right now. In two years, maybe not. But right now, it’s pretty clear.

Proven himself in the AL East still means something when he has had more games than other pitchers against players like Ortiz, Teixeira, Rodriguez, Jones, Wieters, Davis, Bautista and Encarnacion.. He can be counted on down the stretch for divisional games more than someone like Cueto or Hamels who have minimal innings against the AL East.. Or do you judge a team/pitcher solely on their win loss record??

no one judges a player “solely” on any one stat. I’m guessing you’re one of THOSE that thinks wins are meaningless.

You’re reaching pretty far between the evidence you give, the point you try to make, and then the “straw man” at the end.

They’d trade Zobrist straight-up for rights to San José.

^^^^ very true – don’t expect A’s brass to deal with SF until SF knocks off the “territorial rights” the A’s gave them in 1992 because the Giants were supposed to move there and didn’t.

I never understood the pissing match between these two teams.. A’s move to San Jose and the Giants can market Oakland.. The Giants should feel bad for Oakland having to play in that stadium.. The A’s AAA affiliate is in Sacramento and has the highest attendance in all of minor league baseball.. If Sacramento has enough money left after paying for the Kings new stadium, they should build one for the A’s so maybe they can actually afford a marquee free agent for once..

Giants’ AAA team is in Sacramento now. A’s AAA team is in Nashville. And I didn’t realize the Giants were forcing the A’s to never upgrade the stadium in Oakland.

A few of these seem rather light, specifically the ones involving a Price + Cespedes trade (except the last one, which isn’t realistic). The others seems quite fine.

Being a Yankees fan, I feel like that get for Price and Cespedes is pretty light. Severino is good, one of our top prospects, but I’d say throw in another higher level prospect from our system. I would say Sanchez, but you guys have a catcher. So maybe…Jacob Lindgren or Jake Cave?

I’d say the Yankees would do it, but I don’t think the Tigers would. While they haven’t played well, I doubt they would be willing to give up so easily and I feel as though they would ask for more simply because of that. Almost like a “you have to overpay us to make us say uncle on the season”.

No way the Royals Trading in Division to get him. Finnegan not available. Pirates not giving up Prospects for Rentals.
Zobrist Cardinals or Royals or back to Rays.
    Haren to West Coast.

I also don’t understand why Tulo is an “obvious fit” for the Mets. Wilmer Flores, the NY SS is only 23 is doing ok at 10-38 .253. Why give up on him for an older, often injured TT whose power numbers aren’t that much better and inflated because of Coors Field? As for Zobrist….he’s a nice utility player for someone but he’s hardly been anything special for the A’s this year.

Zobrist’s numbers would make him one of the best hitters on the Mets. That said, it will probably cost a bit to get him. It’s not a popular opinion, but I’m OK with the Mets not making any big moves. Their problem is a lack of offense, and eventually they’ll get d’Arnaud and possibly even Wright back (apparently, Wright has resumed light baseball activities and has a check-up tomorrow).

Also, for whatever it’s worth, the As have been pretty unlucky. Their pythagorean W-L is 50-40. Wouldn’t shock me to see them go on a tear and not be sellers at the deadline.

I agree that the A’s are definitely not out of it, and are actually closer to 1st place this year than they were in 2012 at the all-star break. However, the Mets ownership throwing around words like “we want to overpay for Zobrist” absolutely means Beane will try and fleece them. If they want to do Conforto & Familia for Zobrist then its on like Donkey Kong.

I try to never put much stock into whatever the Wilpons or Alderson say publicly. Alderson seems to like to say things in a ‘political’ way. It’s all about perception and saying things that he thinks the fans want to hear, or things that will shut up the New York media. It’s one of the things I like about him.

Tulo would be great on the Mets; nobody thinks he’d be worse than Tejada. The problem there is that he’s unavailable. That’s a dead-end conversation.

With respect to Zobrist, he’d immediately become the 2nd best hitter on the current team, after Duda. Replacing Cuddyer with him would be a tremendous upgrade. Again, though, it doesn’t seem like Oakland is ready to count themselves out. That means Reddick, who would also be a huge upgrade, isn’t an option.

Right now, the Mets should see what the Brewers are asking for Parra.

Fine! The Tigers will have over $100 million tied up in only five players, ravaged starting pitching, a virtually empty bullpen and absolutely no organizational depth as they enter 2016. The Tigers are far from fine. They are about to enter the Dark Ages.

They are about to become the Phillies 2.0.. I say 2.0 because the Phillies actually had a better farm system when they collapsed than the Tigers do now and the Phillies didn’t have any 10 year contracts kicking in when they collapsed.. The Tigers of the 90’s will be back very shortly..

The Tigers will also be getting a new TV deal shortly. Cashwise, they are fine. Yes, the system is weak. Unlike the Phillies, they are already set at C, 1B, SS, 3B, CF, and RF. Victor is still productive at DH. Youth has already been served in Detroit. Now if we could just get a bullpen.

Ah, the ol’ TV deal coming to save the day. If Dombrowski is thinking this way, he should be fired immediately. Unlike the Phillies, the Tigers didn’t win a championship before handing out god awful contracts.
Also, the Tigers being set at any of those positions is extremely tentative. I mean that SS had two fractured legs because of a bone deficiency. The Tigers better build depth at that position.

I don’t see the Jays trading any top ten prospects for Price, especially Hoffman who could have been the first draft pick if he was healthy. You don’t trade a top of the rotation pitcher for a two-month rental under any conditions. For the Yankees to obtain him, plus Cespedes, it would cost Severino, Judge, and Lindgren and I doubt they would trade those players, even though money wouldn’t be an issue.

None of those trades are feasible. Price is very valuable but a contender wouldn’t trade 1-1 for him. I’d see the Dodgers trading Lee, Holmes & Schebler for him. Something like that. Price brings back 2 top 100 prospects and another piece.

Cespedes, I don’t know what his value is, tbh. Maybe just 1 top 100 prospect.
