Cubs Designate Clayton Richard

By Jeff Todd | July 22, 2015 at 9:39am CDT

The Cubs have designated lefty Clayton Richard for assignment, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports on Twitter. Chicago has brought up Yoervis Medina to take his spot on the active roster.

Richard, just acquired from the Pirates to provide a temporary rotation option, has allowed nine earned runs over 15 frames with Chicago. He’s permitted 19 hits (including two long balls) and five walks in that stretch, while striking out only six batters.

It remains to be seen whether any other clubs will be willing to give an active roster spot to Richard, who could conceivably find a role with a team that deals away from its rotation over the coming days. He did produce rather excellent results (1.89 ERA in 62 innings) during his run at Triple-A for the Pittsburgh organization.

Acquiring a SP perhaps? It’s either that or push Wood back into the rotation.

From what I’ve read, he’s struggled in his rehab outing and will probably have at least one more appearance left. They need a 5th starter, why would they designate Richard before Wada is actually back?

        CJ Edwards maybe?

He’s currently working as (and is projected to be) a reliever. I don’t think they’d call him up and then immediately stretch him into the starter role.

They recalled Dallas Beeler to be the fifth starter, at least for today

Yeah, but he’s only taking the 26th spot on the roster that is allowed for double headers. They didn’t need to designate anyone to call him up.

He wasn’t producing at replacement level so why not just use a replacement player, your table is ready Dallas.

The Cubs had a 13 inning game yesterday and have a double header today. They needed a fresh arm, and Richard hasn’t pitched well enough to force the Cubs to keep him (plus Richard isn’t available to pitch today).
