Holliday Placed On DL; Cards Unlikely To Pursue Outfield Trades

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2015 at 3:25pm CDT

JULY 30: Holliday has been placed on the disabled list, and GM John Mozeliak has announced that he has Grade 2 strain of the quadriceps muscle, per MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch (Twitter link). Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that the Cardinals have no plans to jump back into the outfield trade market, however.

JULY 29: Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday left tonight’s action with a right quadriceps injury, Kevin Modelski of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. It remains unclear at present how serious the injury is, though it occurred to the same muscle that Holliday tore. He missed five weeks for the initial tear.

Obviously, a similar absence would increase the Cardinals’ need to add a bat. The team has long been expected to make a move to fill in for first baseman Matt Adams, and recently called up top prospect Stephen Piscotty to add support. St. Louis has been said to be weighing a move for Adam Lind (or someone of his ilk), and that seems all the more likely now.

The 35-year-old Holliday hasn’t posted his usual power numbers in 2015, but he’s still batting an excellent .291/.411/.422 in 253 trips to the plate. An update on his health will be made tomorrow morning, at which time we’ll know more on whether or not the unfortunate news will prompt the Cardinals to jump into what has already been an exceptionally active trade market this week.

I like grichuk but geesh, could you jump any more flat footed. He jumped like 4 inches off the ground on that homer. Could also be the end of holliday. The cards are gonna have to pull off some trades or we may be looking at the pirates ahead of us in the standings. Down to 4.5

I agree, we need more of a big bat then a platoon 1st baseman. Cespedes has supplied instant offense in previous trades.

So you are telling your fans that the only move you are going to make for a team that is in an offensive coma is for a guy who is batting .217? Wow way to stay competitive!!! While other contenders are only making themselves better our FO sleeps at their desks. Do we even have a starter that’s batting over .280?

If Moss is it, then they should have not traded for him, kept Kaminsky, and packed it in this year. They’re done.

Don’t worry Cardinals are too cheap to go get anyone that would help them… Plus we already gave up Miller for a rental in Heyward. And if we trade for Upton/Cespedes we would give up to much and not be able to resign them possibly. So were stuck with Moss.

Um, Peralta, Molina, Heyward, and Grichuk are all hitting above .280 with Wong not far behind. Besides, there are much better measures of offensive performance than mere batting average.

Anyway, Moss has a suspiciously low BABIP, so hopefully his offense will regress in a positive direction if he faces mostly righties, and there’s no question about his power, which is the lineup’s biggest weakness. The Cards don’t really need any more than a platoon bat anyway with Holliday due back before the end of the season and even Adams with a good chance of returning before the playoffs. Throw in the eventual return of Jay and there will be some excellent competition for bench spots come playoff time.
