Red Sox Designate Daniel Nava

By Jeff Todd | July 30, 2015 at 2:38pm CDT

The Red Sox have designated outfielder/first baseman Daniel Nava for assignment, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports on Twitter. He lost as spot as the club moved to add bullpen depth to its active roster.

Nava, 32, put up strong results in fairly extensive playing time over each of the last three seasons, racking up 1,261 plate appearances with a .278/.364/.403 slash. But injuries and performance issues have kept him grounded in 2015. He’s put up a meager .152/.260/.182 line in only 78 turns at bat.

Despite the recent struggles, it wouldn’t be surprised to hear of another team with interest at giving Nava a bench spot. But his $1.85MM salary is a major obstacle, so it will take some effort for Boston to find him a new home. (Otherwise, he’ll likely clear waivers and remain under team control.)

So hard to believe that they couldn’t find a suitor for Nava in the off-season.

That’s a long fall. I thought he was on the disabled list? Can you DFA someone on the DL

I know he had played recently for Pawtucket so I’m pretty sure he’s no longer on the DL.

He was activated maybe a week ago when his DL stint maxed out.

Check that, he was activated a week or so ago when his Rehab assignment maxed out.

Cardinals now that Holiday is on the DL again? Seriously, any team (besides the Dodgers, since they have a loaded outfield) that does not place a claim on him is not paying attention.

Wonder if they outright him or release him. Too bad. Didn’t get many chances this year.

They’ll outright him if they can – but chances are he doesn’t accept and becomes FA. He’s been outrighted once before.

I believe you can only outright a player once. I could be wrong.
If that’s true then that is very unfortunate.

The guy is a career .285/.377/.415 vs. Righties with a very real sample size. He’s an average defender and plus in COF. How has he not caught on somewhere (he makes next-to-nothing)? Inexplicable to me.

He has struggled mightily in the early going the last two seasons. 2013 he was incredible. He needed to go to AAA in 2014 to get his swing back and a phantom DL stint in 2015 to try and figure it out again. He just hasn’t been able to hit the ground running for the past two seasons.

Could have gotten some value for him last offseason, now releasing him for nothing.

He’s a pure platoon player with ok defense. They weren’t getting any good in return anyway.

From Brian MacPherson, theres only 9 players left from that 2013 squad

He’s been outrighted before so I imagine he likely will refuse the assignment and NOT remain under team control.

I like this guy. We don’t really have room for him, but he’s a solid player nonetheless. I’d definitely prefer him over some of the clowns we brought in, but he is salvageable, unlike some other players we have.

Nava is a solid player off the bench.
I have a question, maybe someone can answer:
Why isn’t Cherington trying to acquire a SP or 2? Someone that is controllable is what he likes, so why not go after Tyson Ross (example) Cherington should go after Samardiza as a priority for 2016. Look at all the elite SP, Samardija has less then 1000 innings on his arm compared to Price, Zimmerman, Cueto, who all have over 1500 innings. He will also be a better value then all other elite sP available.
    Any thoughts??
