Orioles Interested In Upton, Gomez

By Zachary Links | July 19, 2015 at 4:08pm CDT

4:08pm: The O’s have also inquired on Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.  As Rosenthal writes, it’s questionable as to whether the Orioles have the prospects necessary for a big move.

Rosenthal reported on Saturday that the Astros have also scouted Gomez.  Late last week, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that the Brewers are now showing a willingness to trade both Gomez and Jean Segura.

3:50pm: The Astros also have interest in Upton, Morosi tweets.  The Astros are on their way to a 51-43 record as they lead the Rangers by a wide margin.

3:45pm: The Orioles have expressed interest in trading for Padres outfielder Justin Upton, sources tell Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).  The O’s have been looking to add an outfielder this season.

The Orioles aren’t the first team to show interest in Upton this summer.  The Mets are reportedly aiming high in their pursuit of outfield help and Upton is high on their list.  Upton, who is in his first year with the Padres, is owed the prorated portion of a $14.5MM salary for the rest of the season.  Through 370 plate appearances this season, Upton owns a slash line of .252/.331/.426 with 15 homers plus 17 stolen bases.

For his part, Upton said recently that he hopes to stay in San Diego.

“At this point, I haven’t given up on the team,” said Upton late last week. “I really like the guys, and I like the clubhouse. We still have some time to change the minds of the front office. In a perfect world, we play well over the next two or three weeks and [GM] A.J. [Preller] pumps the brakes on dismantling the team.”

The Orioles are 46-45 after topping the Tigers earlier today, putting them 4.0 games behind the first place Yankees in the AL East.

The Padres? Who would they want for Arcia? Kimbrel Benoit Thayer are available. Only real people they won’t deal are quackenbush and Maurer.

Arcia is just a younger version of what they already have, a low average, low walk, high strikeout corner outfielder with potential to hit 15-20 HRs in a full season. That’s not something the O’s would consider an upgrade.

Arcia should be traded for bullpen help somewhere. Hes got some pop and a good trade chip. He doesn’t really have a spot in the twins outfield anywhere cause he can’t play center. And he’s out of options.

I honestly doubt the O’s have the prospects to acquire Gomez, and I don’t think they have the right ones to get the Padres attention. O’s have pitching prospects and the Padres should be chasing hitting ones. Gausman is a start, but Bundy and Harvey are injured and there are no high end hitting prospects the the O’s can tempt Preller with.

Upton to Houston is interesting though. A deal around Phillips and Moran with a 3rd piece like Hader could get the ball rolling though

Fisher Wojciechowski and Hader or Moran instead of Fisher would be a good net for the Padres.

Upton and Ross for a deal revolving around Wojciechowski Hader Moran and Fisher would be good for both sides.

Far as the Padres you can start with a good pitcher like Gausman and supplement with other good decent hitting prospects. May take more but Upton is in high demand by many suitors. Mets Astros Orioles are only the tip of the iceberg.

I’d think maybe the Padres would want young, but major league ready prospects. Say Wojo, Marisnick/Tucker/Hoes, and maybe Singleton for Upton/Ross?

Hoes and Singleton aren’t worth much. The Padres don’t want them.

Upton is a rental and Ross has 2 more years of team control.

Tucker could be a piece and Wojciechowski but if you’re getting both it will take Moran and Hader as well.

They’d prefer MLB ready but it’s talent and ability regardless of where they are in development.

Singleton isn’t worth much? The guy is OPS’ing .940 at AAA right now, with consistent pop and hes on a team friendly deal.

              2014 in 95 games he batted .168 with 134 strike outs…..

In 2015 he’s still striking out at a 20% clip in AAA
Even in 11 games he struck out 15 times in 37 PA this year.

He’s a strike out machine in the making.

So is Joey Gallo, Joc Pederson and Jorge Soler, but they are still as coveted as it gets. The kid can hit, make note he is only 23, and last season he was only 22. The approach might not improve a ton but the slash line should. He already hits for power.

OT: A 20% K rate is league average according to Fangraphs.

Yet his MLB numbers are quite terrible. He is in a very similar situation as JBJ in terms of trade value. I don’t think anybody would view him as anything more than a 3rd piece in a deal centred around Upton and Ross, so long as the other two pieces have significant value. I think bigh’s proposed trade makes the most sense in terms of fair value.

Agreed- he’s a guy you’d take a chance on cause of age but he’s a guy that you’d take off their hands so they give other prospects more time playing hoping to catch something.

In no way is he a integral piece.

No chance the O’s trade Gausman in a deal for Upton. He starts next Wednesday against the Yankees and every 5th day after that for the next five years. Chen and Norris are free agents, and as you said their next two best starting pitching prospects are hurt, so Gausman is as untouchable as Machado at this point.

No the Orioles do not have what it takes to get Gomez. Not even close. I don’t think they even have enough to get Parra.

Orioles traded a superb starting pitching prospect for 2-3 months of an excellent reliever last year. Maybe it got them to the ALC series. But one more trade like that, and combined with the players on their roster in their walk years, the Orioles could well be a 2nd division team for tears after 2015.

Not sure how true it is, but I read that being traded was somewhat of a wake up call to him. Apparently some of the changes the Red Sox made were things the O’s had been trying to do, but he didn’t really buy in 100% until he left I guess. Again, not sure how true it is but it’s possible. He was straight filthy at times in the O’s minor league system. I think he’s going to be a good starter.

If the Orioles trade for a Player that is a free agent in 2016, I will not be happy.
Plus, there’s always been rumors about Justin Upton and Duquette, but nothing ever came about.
As for Carlos Gomez… he is the wrong Car Go, although people tell me he is the right one. I still say they are wrong and they will say I am wrong.

Look the bottom line is the Orioles need to get Mat Latos and Carols Gonzalez.
If we can’t then we should stand pat and end of story.

Could the Orioles be sleepers on Ben Revere? Could add some speed to a very slow line up in terms on base stealing and although Machado has been mashing hitting lead off he has been showing a lot of power which would probably be better used hitting in the 2 hole. Revere would also be a lot cheaper in terms of prospects and salary then Upton/Gomez.

This is something I wouldn’t mind seeing. I’ve been thinking about possible realistic targets for the Orioles and thought of Ben Revere and Cameron Maybin. I think either could be good fits without giving up too too much, and I don’t think they are rentals either.

I’m not big on the Orioles going after a rental, but the cupboard is pretty bare right now with prospects. They can’t really afford to go after Upton or Gomez. I think maybe Cameron Maybin, or Ben Revere could be a better fit perhaps. Maybe Parra? I think someone like that would make more sense. It sucked to see E-Rod go for a rental last year, but it was an all or nothing move at the time and a lot of other teams were in on Miller. It’s just unfortunate they lost Rodriguez and Hader and have Chen as an impending free agent. There aren’t any LHP starting options in the upper minors.
