AL East Notes: Yankees, Betts, Bogaerts, Porcello, Chavez

By Mark Polishuk | February 6, 2016 at 8:57am CDT

There are several big-picture reasons for the Yankees’ lack of free agent spending this offseason, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan writes.  With a new collective bargaining agreement looming, the Yankees may be hesitant to commit millions more in player salaries until they know what the new luxury tax and revenue-sharing formulas will entail.  Sources tell Passan that the luxury tax limit is likely to be raised from $189MM and New York therefore has a better chance of getting under the new threshold to lower its yearly penalty rate.  Between cutting down on luxury tax payments and losing several huge contracts (Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, etc.) over the next two seasons, it could position the Yankees to splurge in the incredibly star-studded 2018-19 free agent market.  The crown jewel of this free agent class is Bryce Harper, who has long been considered a future Yankees target — “their future marriage is considered so inevitable by most in the sport,” Passan writes.

Here’s more from around the AL East…

  • The Red Sox may not be in a rush to sign Mookie Betts or Xander Bogaerts to extensions, the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier writes.  Even if Betts and Bogaerts continue to blossom into superstars, waiting another year to explore extensions might cost Boston only a couple of million dollars, a negligible amount for a big-market team.  The two players may themselves have reason to wait, as Speier cites the argument from Over the Monster’s Matt Collins that Betts and Bogaerts may want to see what the next CBA holds before committing to long-term deals.  Given the huge recent free agent contracts signed by players in their 20’s, Betts and Bogaerts also might not want to sign away any of their free agent years in an extension when a much larger score could await them down the road.
  • In a recent podcast interview with WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford, Rick Porcello discussed the decision process that went into signing his four-year, $82.5MM extension with the Red Sox last offseason.  Without that contract, Porcello would’ve been a free agent this winter on the heels of a pretty shaky 2015 campaign.  Despite the righty’s struggles, Bradford notes that Porcello still could’ve found himself a healthy contract on the open market — Jeff Samardzija and Ian Kennedy both landed large multi-year deals despite coming off of rough seasons themselves, and Porcello is four years younger than either of those pitchers.
  • Jesse Chavez’s arbitration hearing with the Blue Jays took place Friday and a decision is expected today, according to the Associated Press.  Chavez is arguing for a $4MM salary in 2016 while the Jays countered with a $3.6MM offer.
  • Mark Trumbo is excited to be an Oriole, he tells MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko, though he was surprised when the O’s acquired him from the Mariners since he didn’t know the club had interest.  Trumbo believes he’s a better first baseman than outfielder, though with Chris Davis now back at first for years to come in Baltimore, Trumbo says “it doesn’t matter to me one bit” where he slots into the lineup as long as it helps the team win.

Similar to Heyward’s deal? I think you underestimate Harper’s talent! More like double Heyward’s money.

Harper’s blowing past Heyward money. Easily. Harper’s deal (as long as he stays healthy) is more than likely going to easily top Stantons contract. Many see him easily getting more than 400 mil and even over 500 mil

definitely more than Heyward. Harper might be the first 300M dollar player. unless he wants shorter deals (like LeBron in the NBA). I believe Harvey is a free agent that season too, so the Yankees will have an interesting choice to make

If Harper has 2-3 more 40+ HR, 7+ WAR seasons, he’ll top 400M.

He’ll get double what Heyward got. I think 12 years, $400,000,000 to $500,000,000 would be in the ballpark assuming he continues to improve on his trajectory and MLB finances keep growing.

Reference Stanton at 13 years and $325,000,000.

People may think I’m crazy, but I would not be surprised to see Harper get 15 years at $600M if he has more seasons like this past one. It will be insanity, I know, but at the least that’s what his camp will ask for to start. Might not get it, but hey we’ve seen silly things happen before…

Aren’t the Yankees expected to sign EVERY major FA?

As to Porcello, who’s to say he would have had the shaky year if he hadn’t signed the 4 year contract? It could be the pressure of trying to live up to that contract, and the many that hoped he would develop into Boston’s #1, that resulted in those results. Still, I am surprised he is still in Boston now that Dave D is running the show. He was traded FROM Detroit because DD didn’t think he was worth the cost of an extension. Now he is stuck with the overpay in the new job. It would not surprise me to see Rick moved if he gets off to a good start.

We can all hypothesize all we want. But the reality is Porcello did struggle big time regardless of the reasons. The reality is from everything I’ve read the entire Sox starting rotation outside of Price is a big question mark heading into the 2016 season. Be it for health or consistency reasons they all have something to prove except Price.

Even Price has to prove he can pitch regularly in Fenway. Not the best home for Lefty pitchers. The Wall can play with one’s mind.

Have mentioned this so many times and you can look it up.. Fenway isn’t at the top of most offensive friendly stadiums of late. You can find it generally in the top 10 now in different rankings, but not top 5.

Since they modified the pressbox and enlarged it around 25y ago, the wind is blocked some and cheapo popups, a-la Rico petrocelli style do not go yard any longer. Is fenway still a doubles haven? Of course it is, but not the easy, wind blown ones it was when it was blowing out as it was at one time and can remember. That changed during believe was Gorman’s tenure when some upgrade’s were made.. Maybe start of Duquette.

Porcello at 20M per year is a big time overpayment. He’s a back of the rotation starter at best, getting 2nd starter money.

I think Porcello will remain with the Sox whether he’s doing well or poorly

If he’s doing poorly, they’re stuck with him. And if he’s doing well, they definitely should keep him since that whole rotation outside of David Price has question marks (and before anyone says anything, Yes I know the Yankees have huge question marks with probably all of their starters)

Don’t think that contract is movable unless he rebounds, and if he rebounds why trade him? Either way he’s a Red Sox. If he can be a 3 fWAR a year pitcher, then the contract isn’t outrageous. May as well hold onto him.

If the new CBA gets raised for the 2017 season to something over $200M say even $205MM the Yankees stand a very good chance of getting under the that Tax Threshold for the 2017. The Yankees most certainly will be under the Tax Threshold for the 2018 season no matter what it is by then even if MLB leaves it at $189MM they only have a little over $100MM in guaranteed contracts for the 2018 season right now.
Heading into the 2019 season as of today the Yankees only have a little over $50MM in guaranteed contracts for the 2019 season they are well positioned to take advantage of as many of the “elite/quality” FA that hit the market after the 2018 season.

If we’re already sure Harper is going to the Yankees it’s time to overhaul the CBA with a salary cap and some hardcore revenue sharing.

There needs to be a salary cap. Soon a bench player will be making 15 million a year and us fans will have cable bills of $200 a month and tickets that cost $200 for bleacher seats. Put a cap and revenue sharing cap. Force the teams who get free money to spend it on there clubs. No more of this tanking a season ans doing fire sales every 3 years crap. These small market teams cry but yet they do nothing but rake in free money from the big market teams and put it in the pockets.

A salary cap wouldn’t fix anything.

The Yankees have tons of money coming off the books in A-Rod, Sabathia, Teixiera, and Beltran. (Brian McCann’s contract might be up at that point too). Harper is far and away the most talented player in that free agent class, and the Yankees will have lots of money to spare.

True the Yankees will have lots of many available to sign FA’s. But the 2019 FA class is loaded to elite/quality players: Machado and Donaldson just to name 2 at 3rd base a potential area of need for the Yankees then their is McCutchen in the outfield who has a longer track record than Harper and will cost less. Now there is no certainty that any of these players including Harper will reach FA’s but if they do there are more alternatives to Harper than most think especially for the projected cost.

Whatever process the Blue Jays employ that causes them to keep going to arbitration over these middling differences needs to be abandoned. There’s a $200,000 midpoint for Jesse Chavez, who has yet to throw a single pitch for them, and $250,000 for Josh Donaldson, the reigning MVP they keep claiming to want to sign long-term. Not antagonizing your players or the fanbase in Toronto is easily worth those amounts.

Who knows? Harper could be another Rod Carew type that refuses to enter the zoo knon as the atmosphere known as the media circus surrounding large market teams.. Such as the Yanks, and when he reaches FA.. Announces he will NOT play in NY?

Some guys just won’t take any amount of money to play in East coast media circuses.. Like Boston, NY. HOF player Rod Carew was one. Don’t count on Harper this far in advance everyone is all am saying, he’ll have his choice of about anyone he wants without those 2 East Coast big spending teams.

There’s been a lot of players who have been declared to be an “inevitable” yankee. But “inevitability” has been wrong before and things have changed. My guess is by the time Harper is a free agent there will be at least 4 teams putting in a serious bid. The yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Phillies, Tigers, Giants, Nationals, Angels, and the Cubs all possess the financial power to take the risk on Harper.
