Heyman’s Latest: Vizcaino, Outfield Market, Chapman, Padres

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | June 23, 2016 at 11:23pm CDT

Jon Heyman of todaysknuckleball.com has another lengthy report full of trade rumors and rumblings. Among the highlights:

  • Closer Arodys Vizcaino is drawing “intense” interest and is receiving more attention on the trade market than any other Braves player, according to Heyman. A high level of interest in Vizcaino should come as no surprise; the 25-year-old boasts a 1.83 ERA dating back to Opening Day 2015 and is earning just $897,500 this season after avoiding arbitration for the first time as a Super Two player this past winter. He can be controlled through the 2019 season, so the Braves would assuredly have a considerable asking price for three and a half years of Vizcaino.
  • The Indians continue to monitor the market for outfield help, and they’re also in the market for some bullpen reinforcements, though they have competition on that front. The health of Michael Brantley will impact how aggressive Cleveland is in its search for outfielders, though there’s yet to be any definitive word on how long Brantley will be sidelined.
  • The Royals, too, are on the lookout for outfield help, and Heyman lists Jon Jay and Melvin Upton Jr. as possibilities, though he does so in a fairly speculative manner. Heyman further splashes some cold water on the Yordano Ventura trade rumors from earlier this month, quoting an anonymous Royals exec: “With starting pitching at a premium, of course we aren’t trading him.”
  • Aroldis Chapman’s name continues to come up in speculation, but Heyman writes that the Yankees haven’t ruled out signing the lefty to an extension as opposed to entertaining trade offers. Heyman adds that the Yankees have yet to even have internal discussions about selling off parts of their MLB roster.
  • If the Athletics end up selling — which they aren’t yet prepared to do — the team will consider anything, per Heyman. But GM Billy Beane is least interested in parting with Sonny Gray and Sean Doolittle, both of whom come with extended, cheap control.
  • Across the bay, the Giants are still willing to consider acquiring a starting-level outfielder even though Hunter Pence appears on track to return before the end of August. The idea would be to move Angel Pagan into a reserve role, it seems.
  • Derek Norris is available on the trade market, but the Padres players receiving the most interest at this time are Jon Jay and Fernando Rodney, per Heyman. He adds that the Padres are open to trading anyone, but an early deal for Wil Myers shouldn’t be expected due to the fact that he’s the team’s official All-Star Game ambassador in San Diego this season. Beyond that, a “Padres-connected” source told Heyman the team would expect four top-tier prospects to part with the controllable Myers, who is having a breakout season at the plate.
  • The Mariners are set to shop for starting pitching this summer, per Heyman, though they could also aim for relief help. It’s not unusual for depth issues to creep up in a pitching staff, but Seattle is probably less than enthused with the fact that Felix Hernandez is now in the midst of an extended DL stint after a less-than-promising start to the season (despite his strong results).
  • Multiple clubs are trying to buy low on Francisco Liriano, but the Pirates aren’t inclined to sell at this time. The Orioles, it appears, are one such team, as MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported yesterday that Baltimore has interest in the underperforming southpaw.
  • The Angels “are officially out” on Cuban third baseman Yulieski Gurriel, according to Heyman. The 32-year-old figures to command a significant multi-year deal, and adding another eight-figure average annual salary to the ledger would severely impede the Halos’ ability to avoid continual luxury tax penalization. Heyman also notes that Tim Lincecum could eventually become trade bait for the Angels if the team continue to struggle and if Lincecum performs well.

The Indians are in first place and the offense is kicking ass, no reason to make a move for an OFer and definitely not one that invovles Zimmer, or Frazier

Totally agree about keeping Zimmer and Frazier, they should be (and probably are) untouchable. Same could be said about Bobby Bradley and most likely Aiken.

All that said I expect the tribe will flip prospects and depth to fill holes while simultaneously flipping expiring contracts for prospects.

something like fazier for vizcaino, ender inciarte and a low a ball prospect is pretty fair value. fills immediate team needs with significant upgrades, and not rentals either as both vizcaino and inciarte are under control for a long time.

1 major leaguer being a defensive first center fielder, having a down year with a league average to slightly above average bat, the other being a bullpen arm for a top 20 prospect who is mashing in aa right now and easily has 30hr, star potential and ready to play at the mlb level next year? yeah, it’s quite fair.

Maybe that is a fair trade in your mind, but both major leaguers you listed (Inciarte and Vizcaino) have substantial control left. Thankfully no true GM thinks exactly along your lines.

I’d rather take my chances with quantity than quality in that instance. Inciarte will have more value later in the year if not the offseason, while Vizcaino should merit a nice package, even if it’s not headlined by a top-overall prospect. And to think ATL would package 2 of their top trade pieces for a guy that hasn’t even seen AAA, let alone MLB is ridiculous. I don’t care what he’s done so far.

You didn’t actually read the article from Heyman did you? Vizcaino alone would be for a “Giles-like” haul of players. So just Vizcaino would be Frazier and several other pieces.

several braves fans i’ve talked to said they’d do this trade in a heartbeat or they said they would do this with maybe additional lower level prospects getting exchanged on both sides. why? because they all realize how much of a stud frazier is already and how hard it is to get a bat like that is now adays, already his swing is getting compared to josh donaldson.

using the giles trade as precedent is ridiculous, you are using a deal that is universally looked at as being horrendous for the team acquiring the relief pitcher as a measuring stick of what someone should get. and frazier is way better than any prospect the astros gave up. what’s next? we gonna look at the shelby miller trade and say every team should give up just as much for any starting pitcher?

if anything the giles trade teaches us how volatile young relief pitching can be and how much risk there is in acquiring it.

What about what the Red Sox had to give up for Kimbrel? Really good closers/bullpen guys under team control for significant time will cost more than just organizational type prospects. Not saying Frazier or Zimmerman for Vizcaino is fair but you probably have to be willing to give up 1 to 2 top 100 prospects to get him

It would take more than what Heyman has listed in his article to get gray, and Sam Travis is definitely not Paul Goldschmidt. Doesn’t matter anyways though because beane wouldn’t trade gray for less than full value, which would require a complete 180 from when he stated earlier this year that he would not trade him.

It’s not as bad as you make it out to be. Potential #2 starter in Rodriquez, who only in his last start looked like the pitcher from last season. He sat 94-5 yesterday and held the Chisox to 2 runs until the pitch count climbed to the 80+ range and remember.. The guy hasn’t pitched all season.. Was probably tired.

Kopech is probably the 5th best prospect in the Sox system, only because the team has 4 of MLB’s top 50 prospects ahead of him. He’s only 20, drafted 1st round in 2014, sits 94+, touches 100mph as a starter and throws strikes.. The issues were he got suspended 50g last year for some food supplement, not ped, but might as well have been. Suspended is suspended and broke his hand this spring in a fight that has just now healed and started pitching again.

Sam Travis is out for the year, Owens’s prospect shine has basically burnt out, and Kopech has legitimate character concerns. Don’t see any way that Gray goes to Boston without at least one of Moncada, Benintendi, Espinoza, or Devers

ERod is a mirage. For all the hype, he’s only had one good stretch in the minors (right after the Sox got him) and a decent debut last year. He looked very hittable yesterday, throwing all fastballs. He’s no frontline starter.

Its all wishful thinking by a Boston writer that the A’s would trade Gray to them. Beane would need to be so over whelmed in prospects to trade Gray. Would probably be 3 or 4 of their top ten prospects.

I can’t see any situation in which Chapman takes an extension when he’s this close to free agency. The smart thing to do is wait it out until the offseason so he can see what other teams are willing to offer him.

Because he is about to get the biggest contract ever given to a relief pitcher. The best way to maximize his payday is to see what other teams are willing to offer. They might be willing to offer him more money than the Yanks and he’ll never know if he takes an extension. If the Yankees want him they will still offer him just as much in free agency as they would from an in-season extension. There is simply no reason from Chapman’s point-of-view for him to take an extension.

I don’t really understand how thinks anyone would give up Trea Turner for a rental.

And Heyman is a good one too. It’s not like we’re talking Cafardo who has a clear bias. I guess he thinks the bidding war will get to that point? I don’t see how he thinks Lucroy, who is a top 3 catcher in the game on a friendly-as-it-gets contract, is worth Joey Gallo, but Chapman who’s an expensive rental reliever is worth Turner.

Waiving Braun so Atlanta can just claim him, is better than paying 30million for Ozzie Albies and giving Atlanta Braun for free.

Brewers should get Tate Atlanta should get Brinson. Atlanta gives Milw both Kolby Allard and Touki Toussaint. And that would be nearer to fair for Milwaukee. Oh and no 30million does not go to Atlanta for Braun. which btw he can’t be traded to Atlanta and thus your whole idea is screwed.

Um, the trade came with Braun. Also switched Tate for Brinson. but you can’t read I guess and only seen what you wanted an Atl fan being called out.

Gallo is a top 10 prospect in all of baseball. That is the best prospect in this trade. Braun just happens to be batting .320 carrying a 900+OPS. Lewis Brinson is at #13. It’s insane that Atlanta was to get 1/3/7 ranked prospects from Texas. And Braun. And 30million dollars for whatever reason. Brewers only getting a Utility SS(because Milw has 2 SSs already better so he’s a bench utility), #2+#4prospect from Rangers for Lucroy and Braun+30million which should buy 1 of Atlanta’s top 3 prospects alone before even committing what Braun is worth.

I get it now though for the Atlanta fan. Stud Braun.=Worthless SS with Dansby blocking.
          Best 3b prospect.in baseball.
What are 2 top 10 SPs. if draft were held and both were healthy.

Brewers get a struggling another redundant OF+ a top 15 Pitcher if draft is held who’s approaching 300 lbs any day now and eating himself out of baseball.

Like I said 10% trade value for Milwaukee 250% trade value for Atlanta Because Atlanta gets every single piece that a fan wants for a guy they only traded Tommy La Stella for and a #2 SP at best, who’s Fip reads as a #3. Suggesting worse numbers coming on horizon. BTW, can Vizcaino make it through the season? He’s about to reach his peak innings pitched since 2011. 43IP last season. 97 back then.

This is the kind of video game trades that I thought were only on Facebook bulletin board posts. Yes, ATL should give up a top-30 MLB prospect at the age of 19 who is already in AAA, along with their top trade pieces for Gallo – someone that won’t stick at the hot corner and susceptible to strikeouts (something this FO avoids like the son of Frank Wren), another high-end pitching prospect, and Braun, who is putting up career numbers but is expensive, linked to PEDs (aka – not someone you want to have a giant banner of on your new park), and his the wrong side of 30. Why is everyone obsessed with package deals? Don’t package them and you’ll get more.

I can see a team dropping 14 of their last 15 games to get a higher pick (The Reds did it last year and it worked out for the better because Atlanta liked Senzel as much as Anderson and probably would’ve taken him.) If a team is throwing games as early as June, that organization needs to be completely reshuffled to get competitors in.

I’m ok with the idea of trading an asset at peak value and letting some fringy minor league guys get a chance to prove themselves at the major league level.

But I hear what you’re saying about committing too hard to tanking. I live in Philadelphia and the backlash against the sixers for not even pretending to try has been immense.

Wil Myers to the Braves looks like a great match. Any ideas on what it may take?

I’m thinking Blair, Albies, Vizcaino, and Rio Ruiz?

          Hmm.

Perhaps because he is healthy for the first time in three years, is absolutely raking, on pace for a 30-20 season, is barely arb eligible this offseason…OH, and he’s 25!

Myers has arrived. The guy who won RoY in 2013 is without a wrist issue and about to settle in as a top 5-ish 1b for the next 8 years. Of course his health could be a concern, but he has already proven far more at the ML level than a majority of ‘top’ prospects ever will.

People may not spell his name correctly, but by this offseason he could be one of the best assets in baseball.

Agreed, its going to take prospects to get Myers, especially when they give up joe ross, jake bauers and trea turner to acquire him.

I am not saying Myers (yeah sorry, spelled his name wrong) will not be a a great 1B. But the wrist issue at 1B is already something we have already dealt with and Freddie is only 26. I just question how great he will be in LF which would have to be his position unless Braves moved Freddie.

Just because the Padres made a lousy deal for Myers by dealing Joe Ross and Trea Turner in that deal does not mean another team now has to be as stupid as the Padres

Those aren’t even great prospects. None except for maybe Albies look like future impact players. Vizcaino has looked great as a closer but that package would not look nowhere near enough imo. Rio Ruiz has had hitting issues throughout his minor career. And Aaron Blair is a 3/4 at best

With the Braves having Freddie Freeman I dont think their in the market for a first baseman. I guess Myers could play left… doubt that the braves are in on Myers.

Why would the braves trade multiple of their top prospects for Myers especially when they don’t have a need at first? The two teams lineup in no way other than your fantasies.

Probably not enough. Only Albies is an impact player out of that group. And the Padres have no need to trade for Vizcaino. They seem to get fantastic results out of whoever they put in the closer role year after year.

Albies Newcomb and Swanson should all be untouchable. If the braves wanted Wil Myers they should just give up Blair vizcaino Ruiz and Whalen

Alrighty then. No deal! You’re not getting an All Star 1st baseman with 3 years of control after this one without throwing in a couple blue chip prospects.

Wil Myers should be a lesson on why you don’t give up top prospects (like Wil Myers) – unless you’re making a run. He’s just now coming through 4 seasons in, and on his 3rd team, and even then his defense never has had positive value. If you’re giving up that much you better be getting something more than a 2-WAR player on a bad team.

The Athletics need to be open to moving everyone on that roster outside of Gray. Gray wold be selling way too low. They are so far away that they can’t be worrying about holding onto bullpen pieces for several years down the line. They need a serious infusion of young talent. They need to jump in front of other teams at the deadline and deal wth teams that still have a chance because the number of teams in contention is only going to go down.
    1. Doolittle to the Cubs for Vogelbach, Edwards, and Caratini
    2. Valenicia to the Mets for Herrera and Montero
    3. Lowrie to the Oriole’s for Brian Gonzales.
    4. Josh Reddick to the Red Sox for Henry Owens, Marco Hernandez, and Rusney Castillo (Sox pay half of the remaining contract).
This is just four realistic moves that the A’s could and should make. Castillo is still young enough to turn it around and 20 million over four years could end up being a bargain. Vogelbach is vintage A’s. They can throw him at DH and watch him pull a Durazo. The guy is an on base machine. The A’s are short on 2b guys, so Herrera would help out there. He has nothing left to prove in the minors. These moves also bring in some long+ short-term pitching for a system that is really barren there. The final move for all of this is getting Hill back on the mound and selling him to the highest bidder. There will plenty of teams looking to pck him up and the A’s should be able to get a top 100 guy.

I highly respect Jon Heyman as a journalist, and understand the journalistic tight-rope one has to maintain while tapping sources one relies on and also using one’s educated opinion, but there is absolutely no chance in hell the Yankees haven’t had INTERNAL discussions about selling off parts. If they haven’t, everyone in the front office should be fired immediately. I feel like such stock answers don’t deserve to be reprinted. And journalists such as Jon Heyman shouldn’t have to print them to get the occasional scoop. I expect better all the way around.

You would be correct.. Everyone has internal discussions about potentially trading every player the have rights to. That way, they are alaways ready for when a phone rings and someone inquires about a certain player. That way you could have a ready answer about what it would take to move that player. Many teams players would require the Sun, Moon, and sky to part with them. while others oh the same roster might only take a bag of balls and a couple of used bats.

I think somehow, some way, Preller pulls off a blockbuster to get his hands on Joey Gallo. I dont think it will involve Myers, but I could easily see Preller having to give up Renfroe or maybe even Padres’ catcher of the future, Hedges, plus Rodney, Derek Norris or maybe even a guy like Jon Jay, whose in line to hit 40 plus doubles.

I might be off, with all the ‘pieces’ because the names I mention here, arent necessarily guys that will make it painful for Preller to part with (Jay and Rodney are free agents when the season is over, in other words)….Preller, is very unpredictable after all. But a big leftie, slugging 3rd baseman, in the middle of the order with Wil Myers, for the next however many yrs, is worth talking about, and would match what Chicago has in Rizzo/Bryant…, SD hasnt had a big hitting 3rd baseman since Caminiti.

Umm Preller should be looking to hoard prospects right now, not trade them. There’s no way he parts with Renfroe or Hedges!

You cant hold onto all of the, bro…its not possible or smart. If hoarding, was how a GM keeps his job, Preller never wouldve made all those trades in2015. Most prospects are used in trade, anyway. And most prospects wont see the light of day with their parent club.

Hoarding prospects is not how you build a fruitful system…having QUALITY farmhands is how you do it (Tampa, Colorado, San Fran, Boston). Gallo strikes out a good bit. But a power hitting 3rd baseman with a decent glove is actually more rare than finding a decent catcher. There’s not a huge difference between Bethancourt and Hedges. But there is a huge difference between Gallo and Solarte or whoever else the Padres throw over there at third. Gallo is a guy who’d be a fair comp to Bryant, and he’d make Petco look small.

Padre fans have to cease with fearful, typical thinking that says we cant have what other teams usually trade for. If Toronto had balls enough to trade for Donaldson, San Diego has just enough to trade for Gallo, in my opinion.

Yes you can hold onto all of them! That’s exactly what every rebuilding team is doing right now! Name one blue-chip prospect that the Cubs traded away during their rebuild. Oh wait, you can’t!
And Renfroe and Hedges ARE quality farmhards. Trading them makes no sense for the Padres in any way, shape or form. We’ll take our chances on Solarte rather than Gallo and his high bust potential.

There’s no need to come outta your skin with the whole “oh wait, you cant”, comment…this isnt a debate, they’re opinions. And we just have different opinions.

I never said Hedges/Renfroe werent quality prospects. But as usual, you seem to be overhyping them, like many people do with Padre prospects.

You talk about Gallo being a potential “high bust”, with his strikeouts…and yet he’s CONSISTENTLY put up bigger numbers and better on base % than Renfroe or Hedges, while Renfroe hasnt really calmed down his strikeout rate, and Hedges has done a little better with the bat, in an EXTREMELY hitter-friendly Triple A league. PETCO Park is not Peoria, AZ.

The Cubs have done an admirable job rebuilding, but you only mentioned THEM, regarding teams who have not traded away better prospects, in the name of hoarding and rebuilding…as in, thats what SD should be doing. People define rebuilding, in different ways. Its great to do it thru your own drafting, but who REALLY cares whether you draft your own, or acquire them elsewhere, if they are QUALITY…and Preller is emphatic about QUALITY.

There are SEVERAL teams who traded away solid prospects during, silent or loud rebuilds (Houston, Tampa, Washington, the Mets and even Texas, come to mind)

So, its a bit disingenuous to say that EVERY rebuilding team is holding onto their better farmhands. That process is always fluid and ever-changing..and when the trade deadline rolls around, you will see prospects moved. It happens more often than not, on rebuilding clubs as well as playoff contenders.

No this isn’t a debate. Just wait kid. The trade deadline will come and go and Renfroe and Hedges will stay put. If Preller wanted to trade them he would have done it a long time ago. I can’t believe you would even suggest that hahaha.
