Padres Claim Oswaldo Arcia From Marlins

By charliewilmoth | August 27, 2016 at 3:46pm CDT

The Padres have claimed Oswaldo Arcia from the Marlins, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. Arcia will start in the Padres’ outfield tonight. The team has optioned outfielder Patrick Kivlehan to make room for Arcia on its active roster.

The last two months have been something of a whirlwind for Arcia. The Twins designated him for assignment in mid-June, then traded him to the Rays. After 61 plate appearances, the Rays designated him, and the Marlins claimed him this week before designating him for assignment Thursday.

It’s not hard to see why many teams find Arcia somewhat appealing, just as it’s easy to see the flaws that have prevented him from sticking with a team this season. He’s just 25 and has obvious power, with 42 home runs in 1,030 career big-league plate appearances. Unfortunately, he’s also struck out in over 30% of his plate appearances and doesn’t walk much, leading to low batting averages and on-base percentages. It appears he’ll get another shot in San Diego, where he’ll join an outfield that’s been depleted by a host of recent injuries (Jon Jay, Jabari Blash) and recent trades (Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton).

    He’s also an atrocious fielder.

Or they could just purchase the contract of Hunter Renfroe who is better.

Problem with Renfroe is he isn’t on the 40 man roster yet so they are using now to evaluate other players while saving that spot and not starting his service time.

Yeah they’re probably doing moves like this to stall the service times of guys like Renfroe and Margot.

El Paso likely going to playoffs. Good to get the young outfield prospects some high pressure experience.

I agree Padres should keep Renfroe and Margot down and let them play some meaningful baseball trying to win the PCL.. 19 year old Urias also got called up from High A to AAA and is killing it. Let them build some chemistry with the AAA core. They have some good players in AAA and great players A and under. I hope they’re done giving Blash a chance. Should keep giving Dickerson and Arcia abs in September with Jank playing everyday? I think Padres could have elite OF if they start Renfroe, Margot, Jankowski. Could be best defensively in MLB? But they might not call Renfroe and Margot up until after Super 2 time year but what will they have to prove in AAA going into next season? Nothing. They’re ready for their cups but let them finish their fine AAA seasons,

Called this a couple days ago. Had a gut feeling Preller wouldn’t pass on a Latin former top prospect.

Just wondering why the Padres didn’t claim him from the Rays. They would have had the chance before the Marlins did. Blash wasn’t on the DL then but it’s just interesting.

Just good enough to get claimed, not good enough to stay around. Baseball purgatory.

Time for the jokes to start rolling in:

Oswaldo Arcia gets passed from team to team faster than you can say “can’t hit a baseball”

What does this mean for kivlehan? UT did a nice article on him this week.

I think Kivelan’s destined to be a AAAA player. He can play 3B/1B/COF adequately and the bat has legot power, but he’s neither a good enough defender nor a consistent enough hitter to keep a job in the bigs. My guess is that they will keep him in El Paso to cover injury needs with the Padres.
