Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune writes that Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto has a hard-throwing lefty reliever — “a legit late-inning presence” — on his offseason wishlist. It’s not the first time that Dutton has reported Seattle’s interest in adding such an arm to its relief mix, and a flamethrowing southpaw would indeed be an imposing complement to sensational rookie Edwin Diaz late in the game. Previously, Dutton noted that the team’s search wasn’t likely to be focused on Aroldis Chapman, whose free-agent price tag will be staggering. The trade market may not be flush with readily available late-inning southpaws, though from a purely speculative standpoint I’d personally wonder if Seattle might match up with San Diego in a deal for either Brad Hand or Ryan Buchter. While neither possesses the velocity of a Chapman or Andrew Miller, each sat at better than 92 mph with his heater this season (92.8 mph for Hand) and delivered a breakout season. Hand proved capable of pitching multiple innings while also showing better control and ground-ball tendencies than his teammate — ultimately tossing 89 1/3 frames with a 2.92 ERA, 11.2 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and a 46.7 percent ground-ball rate.
A few more notes from around the American League…
- Red Sox prospect Yoan Moncada suffered a thumb injury while batting in the Arizona Fall League recently, per Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald. Moncada didn’t suffer any fractures but has been out for a few days already and could undergo further testing today. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski tells Drellich that while it’s the same hand that Moncada has injured in the past, the issue isn’t believed to be serious at this time. Maintaining his health will be a key for Moncada as he looks to force his way back onto Boston’s roster in 2017. The 21-year-old struggled tremendously in his brief September call-up, collecting four hits and striking out 12 times in 20 plate appearances.
- Royals right-hander Kyle Zimmer completed a four-week throwing program as part of his rehab protocol following thoracic outlet syndrome surgery back in July, tweets MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan. The former top five overall pick has battled shoulder problems throughout his minor league career, though the hope is that the TOS operation can help Zimmer return to health. Selected fifth overall in 2012, Zimmer has been a mainstay on Top 100 prospect lists even as he’s battled through injuries, but he tossed just 5 2/3 innings this season and has logged just 222 1/3 total innings since the 2012 draft. Only 67 2/3 of those innings have come at the Double-A level, so even if the 25-year-old is healthy next year, he’ll need further seasoning in the minors before he can be considered a Major League option in Kansas City. Flanagan notes that Zimmer is expected to be ready for Spring Training.
- An Orioles official tells MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko that he doesn’t believe any of Wade Miley, Ubaldo Jimenez or Yovani Gallardo is well-suited to handle a bullpen role. Kubatko writes that while it’s something of an overstatement to imply that the O’s have a surplus of rotation arms, the team could consider dealing one of that trio this offseason. Each is a change-of-scenery candidate after struggling greatly this year, and Baltimore only has two open rotation spots behind Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy.
dwilson10
The O’s need to move Ubaldo and possibly Gallardo. Neither will get a big return but it would free up some money for them to spend in free agency. That is if teams take on their full contracts.
Ace of Spades
If a team was to take on one of the full contracts, the O’s would have to throw in a prospect or 2
dwilson10
That’s exactly what I thought. Unless they trade bad contract for bad contract like they were going to do with Melvin Upton and Ubaldo Jimenez at the deadline this year.
schellis 2
Agree with everyone here, unless the Orioles are eating much of the contract or dealing a young player they rather keep they aren’t getting out from those two contracts. Perhaps if they show something this year they can move them prior to the deadline for something.
disgruntledreader 2
Assuming the O’s don’t QO Wieters, wonder if you might see something like Jimenez + Cedric Mullins for Derek Norris. Saves the Orioles about $10M, gives them a guy with better upside for bounce-back and future trade value, and a bridge until Sisco is really ready in 2018.
MatthewBaltimore23
The O’s don’t need Derek Norris, even if it gets Ubaldo gone. Cedric Mullins was like Aberdeen’s player of the year in 2015 or something like that.
Johnny
Do you guys think that the O’s will have to eat that much of those contracts, considering the poor free agency pitching class and the fact that Jiminez, Gallardo, and and Miley all have only 1 year left on their contracts? It may be cheaper and less risky to go after one of the O’s pitchers as a #5 option than to sign a pitcher like Hellickson to a multi-year contract.
Gilman321
They will have to pay some of those contracts
baseballguy
The O’s are stuck, I cant imagine a team out there that would desire trading out for any of those three pitchers given there age, salary and performance.
24TheKid
The mariners need a miller… but so does every team but the Indians.
seamaholic 2
They’ll get Boone Logan and be happy. Actually, they probably would. He was very good last year in CO and his only real problem is being dinger prone. That’s not a big issue in Safeco.
MatthewBaltimore23
That’s a good idea. Boone Logan had a nice year and he did play at Coors Field, so that would be a good option. They could maybe trade DJ Peterson, since they have Dan Vogelbach too, but I don’t know that much about Seattle’s farm.
MatthewBaltimore23
That’s not a bad idea. Logan had a nice year last year at Coors, which could explain the homers. They could trade Peterson since they also have Vogelbach, but I don’t know that much about Seattle’s farm. Colorado getting a first base prospect would also match up with their hole there.
MatthewBaltimore23
Peterson or Vogelbach for Logan. That would match up at first in COL and SEA has 2 good 1B prospects
Johnny
Mariners had the late inning lefty guy in the pen, but they gave him away. Now Mike Montgomery is pitching in the world series.
24TheKid
Why do you have to bring this up right now as it really doesn’t affect the trade idea.
petersdylan36
I would go further. Get Logan and Blackman for Peterson and… not sure what the mariners farm looks like but Colorado always needs pitching.
tacomarain
A couple of things…
First – you guys do realize that Boone Logan is a free agent,… so no trade needed
Second – Safeco Field is now HR paradise. It was one of 3 stadiums to have 200 homeruns hit in it this year.
docmilo5
I’m wondering if DiPoto’s idea of a legit LH bullpen arm is CJ Wilson. Servais seems to like a lot of his guys from his Texas days. I wonder what his relationship with CJ is.
davbee
C J Wilson is neither a reliever, nor a power arm these days.
coolsiesmatt
Depeding on his medicals I like him as an addition to the rotation.
coolsiesmatt
I don’t see why it has to be a power lefty reliever for Seattle, that limits their options. Would rather see them add a closer on a guaranteed deal as cost control for Diaz since he’s a likely Super 2, they can fill a lefty niche with Nuno, or Paul Fry, or in the Rule 5 draft, or with a NRI signing, or something of that nature. I’ll differ to the actions of Jerry DiPoto but I think this necessity is overstated.
User 4245925809
I’d take Miley over Bucholz in a heartbeat. Why the O’s are looking to unload him and Boston is thinking of picking up the 4y older bucholz who us owed 1.5m more (13.5m option) is mind boggling.
Miley is fast working, liked the town and worked well with carl Willis while there. It would be a win-win if somehow Duquette and dombrowski could send the O’s some flim-flam prospect in exchange and Boston just kick Bucholz out the door.. Where he belongs, for good.
dwilson10
I don’t think the O’s are looking to dump Miley, it was just something that one of the reporters brought up because the O’s have 6 starting pitchers for 5 spots. They are more likely to move Ubaldo or Gallardo than Miley.
MatthewBaltimore23
Miley sucks so bad
Nick4747
As much as Buchholz is aggravating I don’t have a problem with dd picking up the option it’s just $ u never have enough starting pitching and as he has done in the past had a terrible year and then come back and be a really good starter do I think he’s going to have another year like 2013 again probably not but I wouldn’t let him walk for nothing either even if u swallow $ to get something in return
stymeedone
Nick,
Punctuate please………………………! It makes it easier to figure out what you are saying.
badco44
Miley’s blowup in the dugout is what got him out of Boston, and he turned over in Seattle…. gee that would seem to me he has club house issues… and now seems his good graces are not withstanding in Balt… fat chance back to Boston
Nick4747
Possibly could see a bad deal for bad deal situation to maybe an overpaid guy like u ubaldo or Gallardo to a nl team for a guy that’s probably more of a dh type @ this stage none of them offer much value if I were the orioles of all those guys I’m taking my chances with Miley of all of them
pinballwizard1969
Interesting dilemma for the Orioles. Three starters with lets face it ugly numbers that they might want to move in a very weak starting pitchers market. All 3 with just one year left on their deals. I don’t think the O’s could expect to get much at all back in a trade even they eat some of each players salary.
stubby66
Why any free agent would consider the Os is beyond me they will just flunk them on the physical lol
Nick4747
Alot of them do it because their options are limited like Cruz was or Gallardo or fowler last year most of the time they have Baltimore or like one other team
seamaholic 2
You know that was only two players (contrary to reports, that’s not why the O’s didn’t get Dexter Fowler), and they were right about both of them, don’t you? That meme needs to die.
randomness lez
But it’s so much easier than thinking.
Nick4747
By all reports Baltimore has the strictest physical is that a bad thing probably not protects against getting screwed at least by injury and if it really prevents a player from going there or even seriously thinking about it he’s probably damaged goods anyways the fowler thing different reports but honestly it got blown out of proportion he’s happier right now I’m sure
stubby66
Really you guys need to relax I say that and I’m an idiot but if a writer says it it is a story to talk about for a couple of days. Medicals are basically what comes down as someone’s opinion
steelerbravenation
Trade Gallardo to the Braves for Markakis
Nick4747
Interesting guy quite a possibility the question is does either team want the opposite guy Markakis they let walk and does Atlanta want him maybe they feel Gallardo is more of an nl guy like Javier Vazquez was
Dookie Howser, MD
Makes sense from the Brave’s perspective. They have 4 outfielders, need rotation help, and would save them $9mil if they decline Gallardo’s 2018 option. Not sure how the Orioles would look at that deal, though…
Nick4747
That type of deal they might have to settle on because how bad he was last year only way to actually get something for him is someone like markakis only question might be that extra savings thing might want less commitment a last year of a contract type player
pinballwizard1969
The Braves are moving into a new stadium for 2017 they have played poorly for 3 years now. They need to show their fans they are improving not just “treading water” by swapping players.
Nick4747
With a lack of free agent sp available that might help them more than a current sp if only just for that year and a markakis trade might help them do that by freeing up a spot in the outfield for someone via trade or free agency nobody said they would stop there they could make other moves teams all the time make treading water type of moves in addition to that big splash
pinballwizard1969
Nick they could. I just don’t see the Braves making a trade like the one that’s been suggested.
camtastic
Doubt the O’s get rid of any of them they only used 9 different starters this year or an average of 8 a year the past three years. With the way pitchers get injured you need to develop a capable backup rotation of at lest 3-5 serviceable starters in the bullpen or in the minors to be successful. With the extremely week starting pitchers market and the fact that they are owed 9.25mill for Miley 13 for Gallardo (including buyouts of their team options) and 13.5 mill for ubaldo it actually might make them attractive options. To summarize if the O’s do not need to get rid of any of these guys but the week free agent market will make them look a lot more attractive once we start seeing the contracts for the free agent starters
Nick4747
With the weak free agent market could we be selling one of them short we aren’t in the negotiating room so its just guessing but free agency just so terrible this year with starters might all of us be selling any of them short maybe for a different type of trade like a young minor league starter to provide the depth that you speak of ( not saying a great prospect or anything BTW)
pinballwizard1969
Nick not sure I understand why a team would give up a young player even a halfway decent unproven prospect for one of these guys. The FA starting pitching market is weak but there are more FA starters than you can shake a stick at that pretty much are clones of the O’s pitchers above and they won’t require any long term investment OR prospects to sign. That’s just my opinion.
camtastic
The thing I could see is moving Ubaldo or Yovanni for a similar type player that could use a change of scenery maybe like the Trumbo trade. I actually feel comfortable with there starting depth with Tillman/Gausman/Bundy/Miley/Jimenez/Gallardo/Wright/Wilson/Worley/Lee/McFarland were not really gonna find much better options in free agency and I wouldn’t want to have to overpay in a trade to get a quality starter
Nick4747
I’m more of that mindset that it’s more likely another change of scenery guy and by prospect I meant more of a guy with minor league options that’s more of a spot starter just to get him out of occupying a spot on the 25 man definitely not a guy that at any point in time say we gave anything up for more of a salary dump to use on a bat
coolsiesmatt
Did anyone else feel like Baltimore got fleeced by DiPoto for giving up Miranda for Miley and the financial obligation that goes with him?
They’re close to each other in true talent level IMO with Miranda having superior upside and the full complement of service time and minor league options remaining.
Nick4747
Maybe it was the ptbnl of the deal for trumbo Cuz that one looks bad on the other end lol trades happen that look foolish on either side hindsight always is 20/20 there’s generally a loser and a winner of a deal that time ends up showing who won a trade or not
badco44
Has anyone paid attention to the attendance in Balt? Fans are totally fed up with the owner and his antics of putting together a team. Pitching is high price of MLB and he has cheap skated his way and yes it’s ugly!
Nick4747
They did spend 170 million last year so Idk about cheap but definitely foolish decisions along the way as far as attendance Idk i was shocked how empty the stands were last year right in the thick of a playoff race
Ken M.
Picking up Clay’s option for $13M is a no-brainer.
Among pitchers with at least 50ip in AL in the 2nd half, Clay had the 17th lowest ERA.
fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&…
This was AFTER Brian Bannister was added to the coaching staff.
citycat
Man I would be so happy with a Gallardo for Markakis deal. Both teams would benefit and the Orioles fans would go crazy. Just think if the Orioles had Markakis to lead off this past season
badco44
I think keeping Mr Headcase for the option year is a no brainer, but his days in Boston are growing short and patience is very very thin in Beantown!
davidcoonce74
Bummer about Moncada. I still think he’s going to be a star but it’s probably more like 2018 than 2017 now.
In other AFL news, a certain failed NFL quarterback is now dead last in the league in hitting. Tim Tebow is currently batting .107. I know he sells jerseys and tickets but this is embarrassing for everyone involved – including him.
ethanhickey
Dipoto called Hunnington in August for the services of Arquimedes Caminero. I have to think Tony Watson would be among many inquiries made by Dipoto for that late game lefty. I would still like to see SS get handled first. Hopefully by Cozart, maybe Profar.
24TheKid
As much as the Mariners would want profar, Texas would raise the price way up for Seattle, like Walker and O’Neil.
jd396
Who exactly does NOT want a flame throwing lefty in their own
Sports
Moncada only had 20 plate appearances. Age 21. Give him a break. That’s the smallest bit to judge a player by. He’ll be fine and be a “tremendous” talent
