Red Sox, D-backs, Twins In Mix For Amiel Sawdaye

By Connor Byrne | October 23, 2016 at 4:40pm CDT

Red Sox vice president of international and amateur scouting Amiel Sawdaye is weighing whether to accept Boston’s general manager job or take the Diamondbacks’ assistant GM position, Peter Gammons reports (Twitter link). It’s also possible Sawdaye could join the Twins’ front office, a source told Gammons.

The Red Sox have been looking for a GM since Mike Hazen departed last week to lead the Diamondbacks’ baseball department. Boston’s president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, revealed Monday that he wants to replace Hazen from within, and based on Gammons’ report, it seems Sawdaye is his top choice. In the event Sawdaye follows Hazen to Arizona or heads to Minnesota, Red Sox assistant GM Brian O’Halloran, senior vice president of player personnel Allard Baird, pro scouting director Gus Quattlebaum or VP of international scouting Eddie Romero could end up as Hazen’s successor if the team makes an internal hire. Senior VP of baseball operations Frank Wren has more experience as a GM than any of Dombrowski’s underlings, but he’s content in his current role.

It’s unclear which title Sawdaye would have with the Twins, who named Indians assistant GM Derek Falvey their executive vice president and chief baseball officer earlier this month. When the Twins hired Falvey, who will officially take over after the World Series, a report indicated he would be able to name a GM. Given that the Twins are in contention for Sawdaye, it’s reasonable to suggest he could become Falvey’s second-in-command.

Never heard of him. That makes me want him to come over the Twins with Derek Falvey.

A complete joke, 2 intern buds playing fantasy baseball, another example of the computer brats taking care of each other

Interns? One was an assistant gm and one was a scouting director.. Im sure if this guy was a 70 year old old school guy named Mike Johnson though, you’d love it. Theres a reason teams are realizing that its time they have a new mentality.

Grab your diapers, it took Cleveland 10 years with these so called whiz kids and good thing Theo had his buddies, who he hired afterwards, to make deals with him and the rest of these frat boys are playing for 3rd and hoping their buds will take care of them. Yeah, let’s invest millions into a so called front office, that will be so much better, not! Check out LA meat

Exactly, used to be accountability, now it’s let’s reinvent this game and this saber metric BS is a way for a whole bunch of people that shouldn’t even be in this game and a bunch of wahoo’s buying into a system that will work for one/two orgs and the rest are make believe

The four LCS teams are run by front offices that take analytics quite seriously. Some other teams with progressive front offices: Giants, Red Sox, Houston, Texas, Seattle, Yankees.

Some teams way behind the curve with regards to this “sabr metric BS” as you call it: Rockies, Arizona, Phillies, Marlins, Twins, Angels.

          You sensing a pattern here?

The pattern with the LCS teams is $ with the exception of Cleveland, which has been on this 12 year run for their appearance. The Rocks, Angels, and some would argue Twins are V/much involved in the Metrics and have been so if you want to establish a pattern, it would be hit/miss and furthermore, I would not include SF as progressive

“Some” might argue that, but not anyone who knows what they’re talking about. Carry on.

You are right that the Giants have remained a “scouting first” front office, but you should try striking up a conversation with Tidrow, Shelley or Barr the next time you’re out watching amateur or minor league ball and have them tell you about the importance of Yeshayah Goldfarb’s work in their internal processes and how much he’s influenced the way they each (as OLD baseball men) evaluate players.

Yeah, the Twins have long been involved with analytics, so they went out and signed a bunch of inning eating back of the rotation guys for all kinds of money and have always had a habit of drafting toolsy high schoolers… yeah, Terry Ryan was a bit SABR guy

The only one with any say/authority in Boston is Dave Dombrowski, Sawdaye would be better off going to Arizona.

Well assistant GM doesn’t have a say either, so he gets the same regardless.

He’ll probably have more say as an Asst. GM in Az. than as a GM in Boston where Dombrowski runs the show and Wren is there as well.

Either that of maybe Dombrowski should delegate more authority. After all the last time Dombrowski won a World Series he was with Miami or more appropriately the “Florida” Marlins in 1997.

You’re right pinballwizard. Dombrowski is overrated. All he’s done is:
    1. Build the 1994 Expos team that was in first place until the strike hit.
    2. Build the expansion Marlins franchise into the 1997 champs after only 5 years of existing.
    3. Build the Tigers from an AL-record 119 losses in 2003 to the AL Pennant in 2006 and 2012.
    4. Turn around a Red Sox team that finished last in the AL East in both 2014 and 2015 to win the division in 2016.

Aside from these facts though, yeah…he’s never done anything.
