The Yankees, Mariners, and Cubs were among the organizations that pursued free agent lefty Brett Cecil, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Cecil ultimately struck a four-year, $30.5MM pact with the Cardinals.
Those three teams figure as plausible landing spots for other top southpaws. Indeed, per Sherman, the Yankees are looking to bolster their left-handed setup corps. One possibility, he says, is high-K southpaw Boone Logan, who played in New York before departing for the Rockies and is now again a free agent. Though the report doesn’t further address the situations in Seattle and Chicago, both organizations lack impact lefties in their otherwise solid bullpens and could sensibly pursue alternatives after missing on Cecil.

While the Yankees never made Cecil an offer, the team is said to have kept a close eye on him up until the Cards emerged with a significant contract. The team is still seriously interested in bringing back Aroldis Chapman, notes Sherman. Since Chapman would likely slot in as closer, it stands to reason that another lefty could still be added even if the fireballing star lands in New York.
All told, it seems there are several possible approaches in mind with regard to the Yankees’ bullpen. The ultimate moves could be impacted in some part, too, by whether the organization is able to land the high-profile bat that it reportedly seeks. Last we heard, New York was pushing for Carlos Beltran and dabbling in the markets for top sluggers Edwin Encarnacion and Yoenis Cespedes (see here and here) — all while still weighing a move for starter Rich Hill and other rotation pieces.

Beltran Hill Chapman and call it a day
josc2
You can leave Hill out of that. I understand the need for pitching is strikingly clear, but I’m not sure I’d want the Yanks to tie themselves up in a three year pact for Hill. He still scares me in terms of durability, and though his story is unique and remarkable, I’d stay away from him.
They’re going to need to be creative in addressing their starting pitching depth moving forward. While the idea of a new, though likely less effective, three headed monster makes perfect sense, their starting staff is looking much worse than what they even had last season.
josc2
I do think signing Beltran and Chapman is a good use of resources and a viable plan however.
cxcx
You have to give credence to the possibility of them signing Hill. They have no starters under control for next year. Unless they are prepared to give out two $150m+ contracts to pitchers next summer (Tanaka, Arreita, Darvish, Cueto) inking Hill might be their best chance at locking up two aces going forward which they will sort of need to do with no depth to their rotation.
costergaard2
Calling Hill an ace is beyond a stretch. Homeboy is knock knock knocking on 40’s door.
aff10
Homeboy also had a 2.12 ERA with the strikeouts to match last year. He may not still be an ace 4 years from now, but it’s not at all a stretch to call him one right now

That’s true I’d much rather do a Gardner for gio gonzale trade win win for both sides
stryk3istrukuout
I’m thinking they go for EE, Chapman, and Hammel.
gomerhodge71
Hammel and Chapman definitely. Not as sure about EE
slider32
I think the Yanks can go all in if they trade Gardner and Headley, that would put them at 110 in salaries. All in is EE, Sale, and Chapman.. Otherwise they sign Chapman, Beltran, and Hammel

Sounds about right
TheBoatmen
Does that mean the Jays didn’t really make an offer or their offer was too low to consider them persuing?
Jeff Todd
They were previously reported to have pursued him. I think Sherman was just naming new teams that were involved.

I still maintain that Mike Montgomery will be the late inning left-handed setup man for the Cubs, especially if they do not re-sign Aroldis Chapman to be their closer. Montgomery has been far more effective as a relief pitcher than a starter in his career. I believe the Cubs view him as their potential Andrew Miller and he could also easily fill the void of departed FA southpaw Travis Wood.
Imo, the Cubs will be more likely to pursue a starter to replace Jason Hammel via a trade, particularly focusing on a controllable young quality arm like Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Chris Archer or Sonny Gray, among other possibilities.
cxcx
Perhaps but they will have to give up a haul for one of those guys, probably starting with Schwarber, which they might be prepared to do.
tim815
I’m still thinking a Matt Shoemaker type for Soler, Candelario, plus makes more sense. Arrieta wasn’t an ace before the Cubs added him. Hendricks wasn’t an ace before the Cubs added him.
They want guys to force weak contact., and have a 1-2 putaway pitch.
Keep Happ, Jimenez, and Schwarber for themselves.
thebare
Not Happ- for none / hey Cubs lets not forget that plan we suffered though .remember the Kids are pitching is coming might be here if given a chance
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
That’s actually the opposite of their plan. They drafted hitters because pitchers break. There plan was always to draft position guys because it’s easier to trade for or sign pitchers.

The Yankees has bested the Cubs in every trade since the 80’s
Ry.the.Stunner
The Cubs will take a middle infield of Baez/Russell and their World Series ring over Castro or Torres any day of the week.
TrueOutcomeFan
I’m thinking of recent trades and for the life of me can’t figure out how the Yankees bested the Cubs.
Soriano for Corey Black seems to be pretty meh.
The Castro/Chapman trades had a lot of moving parts to them. Cubs got a World Series Championship as a net result and the Yankees got a potential star in Torres that really has no spot on the current Cubs roster. That appears to be a win/win for everyone.
ssowl
Castro for Warren was pretty one-sided
TrueOutcomeFan
Straight up, definitely. That trade allowed the Cubs to sign Zobrist and eventually give more ABs and time at 2nd to Baez. All contributors to a WS championship. Have to think the Cubs feel like that trade ended up working out well for them.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Castro is at his peak. Warren was awful for his short time with the cubs. Jankees can have Castro. He’ll be replaced by Glayber Torres
kenster84
Castro is a cancer!
bigkempin
There weren’t a lot of moving parts to that trade. NY traded Warren to CHI for Castro and Ryan. Then NY traded Chapman to CHI for….Torres, Warren, McKinney, and Crawford. Getting Castro, Torres, Warren, McKiney, and Crawford for 1/2 season of Chapman is how they bested the Cubs. I mean….NY gave up a bucket of balls and some Big League Chew for Chapman from the Reds.
stormie
Kind of strange to say they pursued him when they didn’t even make an offer. Not much of a pursuit imo.

Are we still getting Harper next year
Macho King OG
Logan’s market is set. Either 4 years @ 30 Mil, or 3 @ 10 Mil.

Yanks and Cubs have some things in common right now, they have good young prospects and can trade for needs or they will spend money in free agency to add to their weaknesses. Of course the Cubs are in the drivers seat after winning the world series. What would have happened if the Giants picked up Melancon at the deadline, things might have turned out differently. Teams just don’t want to make a mistake when picking up a big ticket item like Heyward, Panda, Zimmerman, in free agency. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for in free agency.
coolsiesmatt
As for left handed relievers go, I suspect that Sean Doolittle and Tony Watson could be traded this winter as well.
Weighed
Might be a good time for Oakland to dangle Doolittle.
costergaard2
I don’t see anyone out there that is worth a draft pick. Especially anyone knock knock knocking on 40’s door.
themed
Just happy to see the cubs finally lost out on someone to the Cardinals after last offseason.
