1:24pm: The Nationals tried to expand the Eaton deal to include Robertson, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets. The White Sox turned them down, however, so the two sides will discuss a Robertson deal as a separate proposition.
11:05am: Here’s the latest on the Nationals’ hunt for a closer, with details trickling in from various reporters, including MASN’s Mark Zuckerman. A new entry to the list of possible closers the Nationals are considering: David Robertson, who Zuckerman says the Nats have discussed with the White Sox. The White Sox are by now very familiar with the Nationals’ farm system after the Adam Eaton deal and the Chris Sale negotiations, so one might think the two sides could piece together a deal if there are additional prospects the White Sox like. At last check, though, the White Sox planned to wait to see where Kenley Jansen landed before striking a deal.
As with the Cubs’ deal for Wade Davis, trading for Robertson (who has two years and $25MM left on his contract) could be a way for the Nationals to avoid paying the exorbitant prices top closers like Aroldis Chapman and Mark Melancon have received on the open market, and that Jansen will likely receive. Robertson is, however, coming off a modestly disappointing season in which he posted a 3.47 ERA and a healthy 10.8 K/9, but with 4.6 BB/9. Robertson can block trades to five teams, but according to Cot’s Contracts, the Nationals are not among them.
As previously noted, the Nats did bid on Jansen, and they met with Jansen’s representatives this week. They join the Marlins and Dodgers in pursuit of the star closer. They’ve also talked with the Rays about a deal for Alex Colome. The 27-year-old Colome just had a brilliant 1.91 ERA, 11.3 K/9, 2.4 BB/9 season while saving 37 games for Tampa Bay. Acquiring Colome would likely require a steeper prospect price than acquiring Robertson, however, due to his low cost and four years of control remaining.

Robles….we want Robles!
WhiteSox4ever
We may get a 3rd base prospect and. Robles would be to much for Robertson would love it but Im being realistic.
gbrando17
Giving away too much is not in the Nats’ vocabulary based on what they gave up for Eaton. Robles could happen. As a Cubs fan I can appreciate the Sox rebuild effort. Great start to the rebuild!
billysbballz
Robles is not happening. But Rizzo should have demanded Drob in that Eaton package because he gave up way way too much fir Adam Eaton. He could have gotten possibly Gardner plus money for half the package he gave up and Gardner is one step or notch below Eaton for a win now team.
ffjsisk
Like Giolito wasn’t happening for Eaton?
somethinghere
He is one large step down offensively. And one large step down defensively. That’s two steps, and they’re not small.
goabes22
Over the span of gardners contract (2yrs) they are about equal defensively, Gardner is a gold glove LF and both can play above average cf. After 2 yrs eaten will probably be the better fielder as Gardner will be well past his prime but for now Gardner is only a step behind eaton overall. Nats went with the controllable, higher ceiling bat though.
LH
Who said that?
osfan77
Gardner has one year of control Eaton has 5 I believe, that’s a big difference! I don’t agree that they gave up too much Eaton is a good OBP guy plays gold glove defense and is a shoe in for over a 100 runs a guy like that under control is going to cost a ton! Now days is all about affordable controllable contracts! That’s why they gave up more to get Eaton rather than McCutchen
Aaron Sapoznik
Perhaps Robertson + Nate Jones could persuade the Nats to part with Robles.
basquiat
Robertson isn’t worth Robles. He was hardly shutdown last year.
floridapinstripes
There’s no way you’re getting Robles or Ross.
They still have Fedde
Kieboom can play second
Neuse can play third
Koda are major league pitching options.
Severino can catch until Collins gets up
JT19
Robles wasn’t in the Eaton deal, and the Nats were hesistant to include him in the Sale deal. Robertson isn’t the magical player that convinces the Nats to give up Robles.
dwilson10
The Nationals don’t have enough left to get Robertson after they gave up way too much for Eaton.
jmace2710
they should have had the white sox add robertson in the eatin deal
sarismash
agree.
virginiascopist
I’m not sure they could have added Robertson to the Eaton deal because they were still waiting to hear about Jansen.
billysbballz
So Drob sets up for Jansen. Makes no sense and Nats gave up way too much.
jacobsigel1025
The Nationals have Robles, Ross, Cole so how do they not have enough?
csamson11
Because they aren’t going to trade Robles or Ross for Robertson, and their depth took a hit when they traded their top two pitching prospects so I doubt they’re going to move Cole either.
Cias
They already gave up waaaaay too much for Eaton lol
impaler
Speaking of the Dodgers. Jensen and Turner sign elsewhere, which it looks like it will happen. The White Sox have Robertson and Frazier.
How’s your farm system doing these days?
Jamespfunk
After what they gave the white Sox to get an average OF they might as well just give up Harper for Robertson straight up. Why stop now. Maybe throw in Turner too.
whitesoxshawn
Lol!!!
pukelit
Eaton is actually a really good outfielder with tons of control. Look up his stats before you say anything
halos101
adam eating is far from an average player
justinept
Eaton is what the Cubs expected form Heyward. .284/.362/.428 with 14 home runs, 14 steals, and gold glove defense in RF. He’s a good offensive player, but he’s not special. His real value is tied to RF. Can he play CF? Sure. But he’s nowhere near as valuable there as he is on the corner. That’s the problem with this trade. The Nats need him in CF
Priggs89
Nah. Even if he only plays an average CF, which isn’t a big stretch IMO, he carries enough value on the offensive side to still be a 4+ win player. And if he bounces back in CF and plays like he did in 2014, he’ll still be a 5+ win player in CF. He’ll probably never be gold glove caliber in CF, but I HIGHLY doubt he’ll have the issues that he had in 2015.
On that contract, he’ll still provide a ton of excess value either way.
staypuft
That’s a lot of ifs
Priggs89
“Average outfielder”
You might as well just say you don’t know anything about him.
theruns
Always amazing when people say stuff like “Eaton is an average OF”, on a site like this with direct links to BR pages.
I mean, this dude is literally on the site with access to information and still cannot process what he’s seeing.
Or maybe he’s just trolling.
vtadave
No, these people aren’t trolling. They’re just not aware that Eaton is a better player with a far more favorable contract than guys like McCutchen.
osfan77
Eaton is an average Outfielder? What planet are u from? Michael Saunders is someone I would say is an average Outfielder
meandog
Isn’t it obvious that after years of cautiously bring Giolito along, the Nats concluded he’s a 4 or 5 at best? Or just another bullpen arm. If Lucas was a stud, no way Rizzo would have given him up.
Boomer14
I think this is one asset the White Sox should hold until mid season. I feel like his value will rise and could potentially get more for Robertson.
swh001
Did you watch him pitch last year? Get any prospect you can
swh001
Did you watch him pitch last year? Get any prospect you can while he still has value
SupremeZeus
I agree w/ this sentiment. Unless the White Sox can get the exact return they want (maybe Calhoun – LA?) right now. The thought that Robertson’s #’s/BB issues were influenced by his knee injury have some merit. Once Jansen signs and rocks the market again, Robertson and Nate Jones start to look more attractive.
justinept
Why is LA trading for a closer when they’re terrible?
Doc Halladay
I believe he’s referring to Willie Calhoun, the Dodgers prospect, as opposed to Kole from the Angels.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Naw rather they sign Holland and give up pieces for Brach.
Boomer14
I agree. I think he was pitching injured. Wouldn’t hurt to wait if not getting a quality return.
kaido24
I doubt the Nationals land Jansen so they will have to trade for one if they can afford it.
After Jansen signs, the price for a closer for those without will go up I would guess.
gbrando17
With as much as the Nats gave the Sox they should have asked for Robertson in the deal. I understand the urgency to win, but the Sox committed highway robbery in that Eaton deal. Anything left to give them for Robertson?
brendanc315
Washington White Sox
blovy8
Almost happened in the 80s.
Bob Smiley
the Sox should ask for Drew Ward. he would mash in Chicago. 3b.
chadarrieta
If I wants to get rid of someone I start rumors about them and the Nationals would probably take the bait.
masnhater
Robles, Fedde, and Gio for Britton.
steelerbravenation
Robles for Colome they are gutting the farm anyway
blovy8
If they want more than a lottery ticket, I just pay for Holland – he’s not getting 12.5 mil a year.
Frank Richard
Cole, Kieboom, Fredde, Ward, and Ross would all be good options. Robles isn’t happening. The Sox should sell anything not nailed down. Quintan, Abreu, Robertson, and Frazier should all be on the block.
Monkey’s Uncle
This just in: Nationals discussing acquiring everybody in exchange for everybody else.
Seriously, their equipment manager is going to run out of uniforms.
cards667
Cardinals go get him. Have a pen of Robertson, Siegrist, Oh, Cecil, Bowman, fill out the last 2. Rosenthal?, Wacha?
Oh has said he wants to test FA after 2017 and not looking for an extension at this time. Build a shut down pen and be ready incase Oh leaves you aren’t signing more Broxton’s.
patborders92
The Cecil signing already looks really bad
WAH1447
Disagree he will do well in St. Louis
wsox2005 2
I would be fine with Kieboom or Nuese. Smart move to wait until Jansen signs though. Maybe Marlins get involved for Robertson? Not sure what their farm system looks like though.
floridapinstripes
It’s even worse then the Nat’s now.
qost
Nationals will only consider Robertson if they don’t get Jansen. Saved 10M in payroll for 2017 by getting Eaton vs. Cutch. 2017 payroll currently projected for 152M not counting cost of closer. If they want, they have created room for 80M/5yr contract for Jansen.
PS: WashPost article had the following quote re Giolito: “My regret, from late in the season, is that I didn’t more thoroughly examine what was going on here, especially when one Nationals official said succinctly, “He’s not going to be what I thought he was going to be.”” If Giolito doesn’t break out in 2017, his prospect value will plummet. Nationals understood the risk/reward equation in choosing to trade Giolito now instead of facing the potential risk of further erosion of his prospect value.
PPS: Robles now untouchable, with the potential of being top MLB prospect by end of 2017.
impaler
With that said, Giolito will be mentored by Don Cooper one of the best pitching coaches in MLB. If Giolito is even remotely as they say he could be then Coop can tweak him and get him where he needs to be.
Example: Quintana. He went from system to system. Coop got a hold of him and now he is one of the best front line starters in MLB.
kevinnelson
Name the last CY Young or 20 game winner Coop produced? He is the most overrated coach in the game. Look at the Sox bullpen issues these past years.
ChiSoxCity
Chris Sale.
CaliWhiteSoxFan
Sale never won 20 or a Cy Young.
CaliWhiteSoxFan
Esteban Loaiza went 21-9 in 2003 under Don Cooper.
cws2120
The bullpen issues were from robin mismanaging the bullpen not because of cooper. You can’t use wins as an argument because there were games last year that sale should’ve won but the offense didn’t produce.
ChiSoxCity
He’s capable of doing it with run support. Point is, Coop’s good at what he does. The Sox ALWAYS have pitching.
jwberry2
Sox should ask for Neuse and Stevenson once Jansen signs
justinept
Why would the White Sox return to the scene of the crime? That’s the easiest way to be caught!!
Boomer14
That’s funny
citizen
robertson & kenny williams for trea turner.
CaliWhiteSoxFan
I like the way you think…
palehose79
Lol, yeah. Maybe even throw in Avi Garcia to sweeten the deal.
nats7
Shouldn’t be talking trade with White Sox -will have to give up your unborn children
kevinnelson
We want naming rights
Ted 2
sorry — it’s gonna be Guarantee Rate
kevinnelson
lol that hurt damnit
nats7
Paid way to much for Eaton-that trade should have included Robertson
kenthehawk
I see Robertson going as a high leverage/set up guy to a team with an established closer. Wouldn’t be shocked if the Sox ate some of his contract. Also, they may wait till trade deadline because he is a good candidate for reestablishing value when not being managed by Ventura.
staypuft
Shouldn’t the Mets be in on somebody like Robertson?
hojostache
Robertson is exactly who the Mets should target…not sure they’d be willing to move the prospects for him though.
dtcarroll1992
go ahead, unload the farm to chi-town nats. haha
Ted 2
Good on Hahn for not throwing Robertson in on that deal. He’s probably talking to the Dodgers, Yankees or someone else. He should be aiming for the best prospect possible on this and all trades . . .
fs54
they should have asked for nate jones instead to be included that in Eaton deal.
jleve618
Man you guys are in love with these prospects. First, after Domonic Brown I no longer care how can’t miss a guy is, he could still miss. Second, the whole point of moneyball is to zig when others are zagging, so trading prospects now when everyone is holding onto/treating them like gold is probably a step ahead of the curve.
chitownsox11
I agree prospects are risky, but prospects are important because they are so cheap compared to other players. No teams can afford a roster of only established players. The White Sox are a perfect example of why prospects are important, if they had a better system they wouldn’t be rebuilding right now. Their top end talent was pretty impressive, but had no minor leaguers to come up and take the spot for under performing players/injured players. Prospects are the lifeblood to any good organization.
And I would argue they became even more important with the new internationals signings rules. The Dodgers, Cubs, etc. can no longer just out spend everyone to get the premium international talents. Like the Red Sox did with Moncada. Everyone is on an even playing field you cannot “buy” a good farm system internationally anymore.
santosPinkyToe
But you still have to scout and draft talent. Something the white sox can not do. And once the sox think they are ready to contend again circa 2019/20 Williams will steal the keys the car and reck it like he’s been doing since they lucked into a World Series
Enarxis
Robertson to the Jays !!!!
A package head by Foley can be yours !!!
Our 2nd and best pitching prospect who is near to the majors !!!
cws2120
That’s not going to happen. The White Sox need position player prospects because they all ready have five really talented pitching prospects.
Steven P.
Miami with what prospects??? Garrett is the only top 100 guy in their system and the Sox need position players
phillies012tg
Could anyone make sense of a trade of Abreu to the Rangers? Idk where else abreu could end up
cws2120
I could see Miami sneaking in and getting him.
hitless1
The haul for Sale and Eaton looks incredible. But prospects have gotten many a GM fired. Also, Rick and Kenny have been behind this mediocrity of the Sox for so long. I don’t trust them to go the prospects route. I’ve lost confidence in them.
canajay12
I’m honestly surprised that the Nationals got off the phone with Pitt. You’d think with a similar talent in Starling Marte Pittsburgh could have been rolling in young high end talent. Selling Marte would really hurt but damn bringing back a package of near MLB players like those could have really helped a small market club looking for even more affordable contributors.
nrd1138
Whatever the Sox get, I hope it is a position player, specifically 3rd base if they can get one. Sox have plenty of pitching, they need hitters/position players in their org BIG TIME
Aaron Sapoznik
Your correct about 3B being a weak link in the organization, although Yoan Moncada may ultimately wind up there if he bulks up too much to stay at 2B or even SS. The White Sox have already said Moncada will begin his career in the organization at 2B, likely at AAA Charlotte to begin the 2017 season.
Aaron Sapoznik
As a White Sox fan, I’m hoping the Marlins sign closer Kenley Jansen. That might give the White Sox another good option to deal with in a trade for Robertson. A trade might also be expanded to include Todd Frazier if free agent 3B Justin Turner spurns the Dodgers and signs elsewhere.
kizdashiz
I agree with all this. All the teams that should be “winners” this year seem desperate to fill in holes. If the nats and dodgers get desperate I’d love to see a Frazier for Alex verdugo trade. Just please no Puig!
afenton530
Darren O’day is becoming very good trade chip to restock the orioles farm
kizdashiz
Theoretically, since soler went to Kansas City (some MLB experience, lots of control) for Davis (great pitcher, one year of control) and if Jansen signs with the marlins. Couldn’t Robertson ( decent pitcher, two years control) go for Robles (top prospect, lots of control)? The eaton deal stinks of desperation. Maybe they will get desperate again after losing out on their closer.
