Orioles Notes: Dyson, Gardner, Trumbo

By charliewilmoth | December 7, 2016 at 5:26pm CDT

Here’s the latest on the Orioles, who seem to have spent the day so far in pursuit of position players:

  • The Orioles have recently spoken to the Royals about outfielder Jarrod Dyson, FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweets. (The Athletics emerged yesterday as another possible suitor for the Royals, and Heyman identified the Orioles and Rangers as other possibilities.) Dyson is a free agent after next season, and the Royals might look to deal him as they plan their way ahead. For the Orioles or for whichever team acquires him, he’ll be a cheap, versatile, lefty-swinging outfield option who brings outstanding baserunning and defense.
  • Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner could be a fit for the O’s, Heyman tweets. The Orioles, however, would like to have the Yankees pay down some of Gardner’s remaining salary (a total of $25MM guaranteed over the next two seasons). At last check, the Yankees had been listening to offers for Gardner. Whether the Yankees would want to trade Gardner within the division remains to be seen, however.
  • The Orioles remain interested in retaining Mark Trumbo, MASN’s Roch Kubatko writes. The two sides have agreed that Trumbo’s deal to stay in Baltimore should be four years. They’re far apart on the price of the deal, however. As Kubatko noted yesterday, the Orioles also don’t want to give Trumbo a no-trade clause.

Oriole’s are on drugs. No way should the Yankees pay any of the money left for Gardner. He makes very little.

Absolutely, unless it increases the value of the player(s) coming back.

You gotta be kidding me! He was a bust the moment he signed that extension.

12.5 mil for a 2.5 war player is technically a bargain. Id say hes earnjng his salary

His defense is good, no doubt. He no long hits and does not steal bases as much anymore. $12.5 million a season in that respect and he’s a bust.

Every off season is the same every other rumor is about the Os and they are connected to every free agent and then nothing. It’s all a tease.

Gardner is worth what he is owed, maybe a little less. Want something for him? Going have to kick in cash.

Yanks should eat a bunch of Ellsbury’s salary and dump him. Teams might be willing to take him for @$13 million a year. Gardner is a much better player at this point.

See thats the thing. If they Yankees eat that much money on his deal, they will most likely want a decent prospect/depth piece coming back. Given how much term is still left on Ellsbury deal (I think its 4 or 5 years left), $13 million is still a lot for a guy who is already declining and his skillset will only continue to decline.

While I understand that the O’s are a low budget team I really don’t see a trade happening where the Yankees eat any salary. Realistically who would the O’s send north?

Why are the O’s still wasting time with Trumbo. Move along. This is not a player you want to invest in for 4 years.

Really curious who the Yanks would want in a deal for Gardner. Definitely not worth one of our top relievers

Gardner is well worth his 2yr/$25M contract. Cashman is far too wise to pay any of that in a trade unless the return player makes the difference. This makes no sense.
