The Tigers haven’t yet made much noise at the Winter Meetings, but they’ve been involved in discussions throughout the week. Here are some of the latest:
- Lefty reliever Justin Wilson has been among the Tigers’ most popular players this week. But it appears the Tigers aren’t sitting back and letting potential trade partners come to them. The Tigers asked the Marlins, who are known to be looking for bullpen help (albeit mostly of the closer variety), whether they might have interest in trading for Wilson, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press tweets. The Marlins don’t currently have much lefty relief help beyond Hunter Cervenka.
- Tigers GM Al Avila says shortstop Jose Iglesias has recently drawn interest, MLB.com’s Jason Beck writes (Twitter links). If the Tigers were to trade Machado, they might turn to Dixon Machado at short — some in the Tigers organization believe Machado could hit enough to start. The 26-year-old Iglesias would make an interesting acquisition for a team hoping to upgrade its up-the-middle defense — he’s made little progress on his hitting, batting just .255/.306/.336 this season, but he retains good value thanks to his defense. He has two years of team control remaining before he’s eligible for free agency.
- The Giants do not seem likely to trade for J.D. Martinez, the San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea tweets. They would likely only make a deal for someone in Martinez’s position if they were to also able to trade a player making a similar salary. Martinez will make $11.75MM next season as part of the two-year deal he signed with the Tigers in March.

If they were to trade Iglesias*
Tigers need to add Fowler and go for it all. The AL Central is ripe for picking.
I wish, but there is no way the Tigers will be adding more payroll. The goal is to get as close or under the luxury tax if possible. I could see the Tigers moving Anibal Sanchez while eating some of the money to save some money.
If they’re out of contention by the deadline, JD will be an interesting trade chip then. As will Kinsler.
With the budget constraints, figure they will be looking for a cheap CF, either recovering from down years, like Austin Jackson or Desmond Jennings, or a player that hasn’t quite proven himself yet, like Tyler Holt.
Makes you wonder what the Reds are asking for one year of Cozart if teams are reaching down to the Tigers for Iglesias.
Cincinnati is actually farther south than Detroit. Reach down for that.
As a Marlins fan, I would love Justin Wilson, but who would they trade for him? lol
Vmart for suarez to the reds
I would do that trade if they added a prospect and took all of v-marts contract. But highly unlikely to be done Suarez is below average batting and fielding and they have Dixon Machado that will hit the ball better and field better then Suarez.
The Tigers were the ones who provided the Reds with Suarez. Why would we want him back? Even if Iglesias was traded, Suarez is not a SS, as the Reds found out.
MLBTR has been struggling in the proofreading department (3 error average per article), and could look to bring in a veteran lefty or righty proofreader to shore up the editorial staff.
Tigers need to trade for Jankowski, Make it happen AA.
As a Padres fan I hope they hang onto Jankowski for awhile. His value will go up.
