I think we’ll all be in for a treat if wright comes back close to how he was last year, despite the Ortiz the Sox hold some great value offensively without the overall power, which could be a fun game with lots base hits, especially in ballpark that yields lots of doubles
BoSox009
They acquired Rutledge 2 years ago……..not exactly an offseason move
SamFuldsFive
He was a Rule 5 pick this year, though.
AidanVega123
And they acquired him again this offseason in the Rule 5 draft
BoSox009
scratch that, i’m an jerk. I didn’t realize he even left the organization
IACub
Don’t be so hard on yourself man
trace
I gave them a B.
They swung a major trade for a great starter, while still keeping the #1 prospect in baseball inhouse.
They still have to address their corners IF situation.
bigkempin
Moncada was the #1 prospect before the Sale trade.
MB923
Depends on what list you’re talking about. Some had Benintendi as #1
jdgoat
Are you sure? I’m pretty sure he was somewhere in the 20’s last year and just moved into the top 5 this year
Chico Outlaws Fan 44
Moncada was and still should be #1 prospect. Maybe Benni next year is. better to have but imo it makes no sense that he isn’t still #1 prospect. Still love the trade and Benni as a Sox fan
lowtalker1
His mo reminds the same sell the farm for high end pieces or free agent signings that may or may not work
Has he ever won the series as gm? Just curious
Don’t like him personally
davidcoonce74
Dombrowski has won two World Series as a GM
Ry.the.Stunner
One
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
He won it in ’97 with the Marlins and made it twice more in ’06 and ’12 with the Tigers.
RiseAgainst3598
03 Marlins?
Ry.the.Stunner
He wasn’t with the Marlins in ’03.
Dombrowski has only won one World Series as a GM.
matythewdh
That’s right. He left The marlins in ’01, but a huge reason they won the WS in ’03 was because of the young players he brought in.
lowtalker1
Tigers didn’t win
He was with the Marlins and cardinals?
This ain’t the cardinals way
lowtalker1
The 97 marlins were made up of 6-7 Padres after the 94 fire sale
Ry.the.Stunner
Dombrowski was never with the Cardinals.
lowtalker1
That’s what I thought
jakem59
they had 1, Sheffield. That for sale also happened 4 years prior.
jakem59
He built the Expos farm system as a GM, led an expansion team to a world champions a few years after forming, was forced to sell that team off, rebuilt the farm back up, the young players he drafted and acquired during that time were the nucleus of a team that won another title after he left, and turned the Tigers from the biggest laughing stock of a franchise into perennial contenders. The hate on Dombrowski is ridiculous, the guys trade record is surprisingly one sided in his favor and this rap that he guts farm systems is just short sighted. Illitch was an owner that absolutely loved the city of Detroit and wanted marquee stars there, Dombrowski obliged him. There are very few moves you can knock Dombrowski for, most of them played out in his favor.
lowtalker1
What expansion team?
Expos might have won the World Series in 94, but the strike stopped
Ry.the.Stunner
The Marlins in 1997
jakem59
The ’97 Marlins. The Expos were an expansion team in ’69 and Dombrowski was already in Florida in ’94. That ’94 Expos team had his fingerprints all over it though.

“You can’t really call it a “quiet” offseason when you swing perhaps the winter’s biggest blockbuster,”
Loved it when the article led off with the Moreland deal–and made it the “Deal of Note”
lowtalker1
It’s only a blockbuster if you win
He did this same stuff in Detroit they got to the World Series once and got their brains beat in
Kayrall
If I were grading the offseason based on how they prepared for next season alone, I would give an A-. If I were grading based on how they impacted their team with a long term view, it would be a C.
jmi1950
Really, no long term view? This team is built for the next 3 yrs. The only players who will be FA’s in 2018 are Abad, Moreland & Chris Young.. And in 2019 only Pomerantz will be a FA.
nysoxsam
The Sox are trying to steal a championship like in 2013. Completely different situation but their primary focus this year like the Yankees is to reset their luxury tax clock. The benefits of doing so are so great that unless you can GUARANTEE a championship with another move, they’re not going to do it. Since that is not possible, this is what you get until July when the yearly costs of a veteran average out. The Buchholtz trade will allow them to acquire a pitcher later if injuries warrant. Would anyone be surprised if they went out and traded for, well Clay Buchholtz on 07/31/17?
chesteraarthur
I would be quite surprised because that would mean bucholtz has stayed healthy that long
nysoxsam
Buchholtz history suggests he’ll be injured in 2017. Philly’s hoping for his injuries to come in April and May and that he’s healthy in July when they can flip him for better prospects than Josh Tobias.
Kayrall
Dombrowski will throw prospects at a team with a bigger name than Buchholz.
jmi1950
I wouldn’t be surprised if Clay is an NL All Star this yr. He looked great his last six starts. He will be pitching to weak no DH line ups and Phils do not have a lot of star players. Plus he is in a contract year.
nysoxsam
If he’s healthy and pitching up to his ceiling, what available arm I’m the last year of his contract could be bigger?
RiseAgainst3598
Does anyone else think 4 lefties in a rotation at Fenway park could be a catastrophe?
davidcoonce74
People have studied this sort of thing before and as long as the pitchers are really good it’s not a huge disadvantage. Sale and Price (if healthy) are really good and Pomeranz can be very good. There aren’t a ton of lefty-mashing right-handed hitters in the AL East, so I’m assuming they’re taking a calculated risk. Price is generally better against righties also. In these days of the 8-man bullpen teams often can’t carry that lefty-masher on the bench, especially if he doesn’t have a position.
bosox3415
Just curious…what 4 lefties are you speaking of? Last I checked Porcello and Wright throw with the right arm and that only leaves 3 spots for a southpaw. I say that because I know you’re not crazy enough to think Drew “I need to go back to the NL” Pomeranz has any business in the starting rotation.
davidcoonce74
I’m assuming he’s talking about Rodriguez, Price, Sale and Pomeranz. Pomeranz has great stuff but the elbow is the issue. He could be Rich Hill 2.0 if healthy. The curveball is that nasty.
bosox3415
Heck! I would even be happy if DD traded Pomeranz for Buchholz straight up.
bleedblue
Correct me if I am wrong, but unless something changed in the new agreement the Red Sox will surely be over the $195 MLN threshold. While they sit around $190 MLN now at the end of the season baseball always add on additional expenses for the season.
For instance the Cubs were under based on salary, but when the final numbers came in the were just over. I think a rule a thumb has been around $15 MLN in additional costs.
Again, correct me if I am wrong, but if my premise is correct the are safely over not under.
biasisrelitive
it’s about whether they trade for salary in the season that’s what the Cubs did with Chapman
jmi1950
The Sox should be able to stay under the tax. The issue is Craig & Castillo (22MM) do NOT count for lux tax as long as they are not on the 40 man roster. Spotrac incorrectly counts them as “buried contracts” The way you know Spotrac is wrong is if you look at their 2016 numbers they have the Red Sox at 215,000,oo0 BEFORE adding the extra’s whereas MLB had the Sox at 204,000,000 AFTER adding the extras.
Chico Outlaws Fan 44
Well if that’s true than that sucks if injury warrants either of these guys to be on the 40 man. Exact reason you sign Encarnacion and keep Buchholz so you don’t have to worry about this
Drewnasty
Anytime you trade for an established ace to go with your 2 front of the rotation guys it’s definitely a high grade but I feel like once the DH maket collapsed the Sox should have gotten in on Edwin and figured the rest out later. They are clearly goin for it and they missed on a good opportunity to replace Ortiz and save money So it’s a B+ for me
Dookie Howser, MD
Not sure how signing EE would save the Red Sox money. Ortiz made $16mil last season, EE will make $18.3 AAV (and I am sure EE would not bring in near the amount of revenue that Ortiz bobbleheads and jerseys did).
miltpappas
I gave them a “C” and thought I was being generous. The Thornburg trade was awful and although Sale is a terrific pitcher, again they drained the farm to get him. In total, they lost a lot more then they gained since October.
ronnsnow
Thornburg was quietly one of the better relievers in baseball last year. And Moreland is an upgrade over Travis Shaw, so I don’t see how it’s terrible. Also, the Sox were able to acquire a top 5 starter while keeping Benintendi. And they still have Devers and Travis, so I don’t see how their farm system is “drained”.
MafiaBass
I thought I read that Swihart’s throwing trouble only lasted a couple days.
jakem59
Yeah, if that. Little overblown.
jmi1950
Blake’s throwing problem was only the first time he was behind the plate in almost 2 yrs. He worked with a coach later that day and his throws have been fine since. Another example of over blown coverage becoming “the truth”.
bradthebluefish
The biggest reasons the Red Sox do not deserve an A is because they sign ZERO people to an extension. JBJ, Xander, Mookie, none of the young stars have been extended. Extremely disappointing. What’s the point of developing young stars if you do not keep them?
_kherz23
They have plenty of time to still lock them up
jmi1950
The reason the Sox did not extend anyone is that would effect how the lux tax is calculated.
Once they reset the penalty they will work on long term deals. Next yr Chris Young 7MM, Moreland 5.5MM and Abad 2MM come off the books. In 2018 they will begin to extend players and mix in younger players like Sam Travis, Marco Hernandez & Swihart.
