Hard to fault any of Stearns’ moves other than not protecting Miguel Diaz.
They’re going to regress in the Win column this year given how (potentially) awful the pitching staff looks. But brighter days are ahead especially if Braun is somehow flipped.

3 years and 16 mil for a guy who never hit in the bigs before, and put up video game numbers in a joke of a league, yeah…that’s not going to work out.
brewcat
I agree. They talk around here like Thames is a lock. Instead, I think the team will be glad they picked up Aguilar. He’s looking good this spring.
bdpecore
I could also see Shaw being moved to 1B and sliding Perez in at 3B for the time being. Based on how minimal their future payroll obligations look, 3/$18MM isn’t going to prevent them from signing future free agents or extending their young core players.

If people thought he’d be a lock, he’d get more than 3 years 16 mil.

Thames is a lock. He’s going to be given every chance to stick as the starting 1b the next few years. Aguilar will be a nice compliment but Thames is the starter. “they talk around here” as if Shaw was a terrible piece to the Thornburg trade as well instead of getting a big prospect. “they talk around here” like Broxton is going to be closer to his first half than his second half. “they” don’t understand anything other than believing whatever nonsense Fangraphs projects along with looking at what happened last year vs an entire track record. “they” have no idea how to break down anything live while watching a game because “they” don’t know the game to begin with. i just summed up every brewers fan board that people post on thinking they know something they don’t. Finally, Stearns absolutely shouldn’t have protected M.Diaz. He was 21 last year in A ball and was nothing more than solid across the board and we’d have to keep him on the 40 man for the next 4yrs before he’s ready to be in Milwaukee – he’ll be out of options by the time he’s up. People act like he’s a legit Top 10 in our system when he’s not. He’s going to be coming back anyway as he’s not sticking in SD all year in their pen.

agreed that there’s no guarantee that this deal will work out, but it still comes at a better deal than the 8.1 mil the Brewers would have had to pay for Carter… a little over 5 mil a year for a 1B the next three years that can defend the position capably, and is on a team competing for the lowest payroll in baseball, really isn’t so bad. Doesn’t help that the team has no real 1B prospect waiting in the wing

The salary isn’t why they let Carter go. They needed more punch from the left side and liked Thames so Carter was expendable. Besides they only controlled Carter for two more seasons. They still have plenty of RH power with Braun, Santana, Broxton and Villar who’s power is from the right side plus top prospect Brinson, another RH bat.

The Crew made some nice moves for sure but they have to trade Braun before he gets hurt again to complete the rebuild. Ideally they try and get a pitcher with front of the rotation upside or Bellinger even if it takes a bigger package. Also, get rid of Niuenheis and give one of the many AAAA outfielders in Colorado Springs a shot. And…. make Peralta your long guy. It clears up the rotation a little and he starts getting hit the second time through anyway. Just my 2 cents.

I don’t think, given Braun’s contract, his health history, and his baggage, you’re going to get the type of prospects you’re talking about. Which is why he hasn’t been traded. At best, he has another great season and they sell high at the trade deadline. But I still doubt it would bring in anyone like Bollinger.
daveineg
Braun is 33. He’s got 3-4 more very productive seasons ahead. He’ll still be in the middle of the Brewer lineup in 2020. He’s a Brewer for life, with 5 and 10 rights kicking in in May. Brewers payroll is very, very low with his salary so no need to give him away.
baseballdeez
Braun’s contract is a steal for his production. Fowler was just locked up through the same age as Braun will be and hasn’t even come close to sniffing Braun’s production. Braun is difficult to trade because he loves Milwaukee and has 25-26 teams on his no-trade list (beginning in May he can block a trade anywhere with 10/5 rights). Combine all that with the team he’s going to needs to have the prospects to bring back in value to begin with and you have a recipe for a difficult trade taking place. Additionally, Braun’s “baggage” isn’t an issue. It’s been 5yrs, not 1-2yrs. Teams know what they’re getting. i LOVE how people think Braun is going to all of a sudden drop off a cliff when he just put his career line at age 32 lol. Of course he’s not bringing Bellinger back because LA isn’t giving him up.

I don’t get it. Hernan Perez who had an outstanding year in ’16 isn’t even mentioned here!
shoelessjoe4ever
Good point. Perez was versatile and productive in 2016. I am concerned that the rebuild is position player heavy.
baseballdeez
Perez is nothing more than a great, versatile super utility. His OBP still isn’t close to being remotely good. He had a breakout year with a 91 OPS+
