Anthony Rendon Diagnosed With Partially Torn Hamstring

By Anthony Franco | April 26, 2024 at 6:52pm CDT

Testing has revealed a partial tear in Anthony Rendon’s left hamstring, the Angels third baseman told reporters (X link via Sam Blum of the Athletic). Although there’s no specific timetable for his return, Rendon indicated he anticipates an extended absence. The Angels put him on the 10-day injured list last week.

It’s the fourth consecutive season in which he has suffered a significant injury. Rendon had four separate injured list stints in 2021, the most notable of which came after he suffered a hip impingement requiring season-ending surgery. A torn tendon in his wrist necessitated another procedure the following June. Last season, it was a left leg injury that cut his year short on July 4. Rendon didn’t undergo surgery that time, though the absence wasn’t without controversy. While the Angels termed the injury a bone bruise, the veteran infielder said he’d fractured his tibia.

Rendon’s current injury came last week as he tried to beat out an infield hit. It’s the latest source of frustration amidst a seven-year free agent deal that hasn’t gone as he or the Angels envisioned. He has played in 219 games over parts of five years with the Halos. That’s 38.4% of the team’s schedule. That number will drop further as he embarks on this rehab process.

New manager Ron Washington penciled Rendon in at the hot corner for 19 of their first 21 games. The two-time All-Star has hit .267 with a reasonable .325 on-base percentage but didn’t hit for any power. He only has three extra-base hits (all doubles) and is slugging .307. That profile — decent on-base marks with minimal power — has been Rendon’s general production when he has been able to play going back to 2021.

Miguel Sanó has taken over third base in recent days. That’s not ideal from a defensive standpoint but does allow Washington to rotate a few players through the designated hitter spot. Sanó has gotten off to a nice start to his first year with the Halos, running a .271/.362/.373 slash in 69 plate appearances. That is driven by a .441 average on balls in play which Sanó clearly won’t maintain, but he’s hitting the ball exceptionally hard and figures to run into a few more home runs as the season progresses.

Chris Davis also seemed genuinely frustrated and upset with his bad play. Rendon never cared. His career could be summed up as wasted potential.

But Davs put up significant NEGATIVE value over the course of his huge contract, which was EVEN WORSE than guys like Strasburg and Rendon who are perpetually on the IL.

This means it would’ve been better for the Orioles if Davis hadn’t been playing had they actually had a decent 1B AAA prospect at the time.

The impact of the amphetamine ban goes WAY under the radar compared to PED. It’s been a performance ENABLER in baseball history. It might not have been alcohol prevalent in the game. But it wasn’t too far behind.

A player being injured is better than them playing atrociously. Chis Davis eating at bats for years made his team worse. If he were on the IL someone could use that spot to develop or perform better

What exactly is it about his friends, family, or God that prevents him from also giving everything he can into his job.

The context doesn’t really improve the stance.

If you agree to do a job, then do the job. If you want to spend time with family, then retire and do that.

Can’t really be all that religious and play baseball on Sundays for starters. If you are living by Biblical principles the Sabbath (Sunday) is a day of rest. Well that’s not true for a MLB player. How can ya properly lead your family if you are constantly gone for weeks at a time? What do you do if you are a Christian and you are surrounded by teammates partying living the millionaire lifestyle? I guarantee you that many of players have roadie side chicks they visit on road trips and he has to keep that secret. If you are the least bit religious you can only be around debauchery for just a little bit of time before it eats at you. Yet the man loves to play the actual game so he is conflicted. He just hates what comes with the opportunity of playing a game for a living.

“Do you say the same…and collects workman’s compensation”…I think if someone who works a “normal” job had different injuries every single year and this kept repeating itself(and the person continues to get paid without working), I think most people would say exactly the same thing(That he’s most likely a malingerer who doesn’t want to work).

kingbum – ” If you are living by Biblical principles the Sabbath (Sunday) is a day of rest.”

Actually Saturday is the Sabbath. Sunday is the first day of the week. Also, “religion” is a man made concept and has nothing to do with a man’s faith. Faith and relationship with Jesus are the key biblical principles. You can’t generalize and say a Christian who has a job that requires travel can’t lead his family. That’s just silly. Finally, a Christian man is a light among those guys who live the “party lifestyle”. We are a light to a dark world.

“14You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

MANY Christian athletes have been in MLB. Very few have shown such a lack of their work being a priority as Rendon has. Prioritizing faith and family shouldn’t be a false front for simply not caring because you’re wealthy. That’s a tuslly very contradictory to scripture which asks us to “work as unto the Lord.”

If you’re set…great! Retire. Don’t steal the money.

I’ve personally seen Rendon curse fans out over nothing. I gave zero issue calling BS in him. And I say this as a fellow believer with my own extensive baseball background.

Me? I wish he’d just keep his mouth shut. Go spend time with the kids…and stop working a job he no longer needs.

That’s not really the point though-I don’t think anyone is saying that baseball is more important than family. But you can prioritize family and still care about doing your job. Sayers clearly did, so it means something completely different coming from him. After 5 years, it’s fair to question whether Rendon cares at all.

I would feel fortunate to make a great living playing the game I love instead of sitting behind a desk for eight hours or asking people “may I take your order?” all day long. Then again there are those who don’t appreciate what they have.

“Super idiot…Think he’s faking it”…Rendon is probably not “faking it” in the literal sense, but I would bet my life that several players on every single team in MLB has players playing right now with more significant “injury” than Anthony Rendon has ever had. Of course those other players don’t want to be known as someone who quit on his teammates and team and Mr. Rendon evidently does not care about any of this.

Rendon is a one-time all-star with only 148 career home runs as a corner infielder. He is getting $245 million for seven years. Tell me how many home runs Rendon has hit for the Angels! There is nothing wrong with people mocking and joking about how bad a contract this has been.

You are correct that I am not able to tell which injuries are real and which are manufactured. Most fans would concede that Rendon has not shown the desperation to get back on the field like, say, Bryce Harper. Not a big Bryce Harper fan, but I feel confident that Bryce is ready to play long before his agent would say he is ready. Some guys, like Harper, are tougher than others and Rendon is not one of the tough ones, at least not since he made it to Anaheim. That being said, I do think this is real injury. I wonder if Nick Senzel ever daydreams and thinks – had luck gone my way – I could have been Anthony Rendon.

He’s had multiple surgeries. And there is no one playing baseball today with a hamstring tear. No reputable trainer would let a player play with a strain.

I get people being upset at the waste of money. But most of these comments are idiotic.

And one of the causes of a hamstring tear is too much work. And i don’t remember anyone commenting that Rendon wasn’t working his butt off to get on the field.

That is a one time all-star for a guy with three top 6 MVP finishes (and another at #11). Contract has been a dud with the Angels like so many of them are, but he was pretty darn good with the Nationals. Dude had a 144 OPS+ in 1800 PA’s his last 3 years with the team while finishing 3,11,& 6th in the MVP race.

Not really a guy that had 1 good year and cashed in.

Maybe the Angels are learning, no huge contracts since Rendon what 5 years ago.

It sounds kind of crazy I know, but I’m not sure this outcome was worse than Albert Pujols going from the top bat in the game to an afterthought in the blink of an eye. If someone would have told me that Pujols would only have one 800 OPS season after age 31 I would have called BS. Atleast with Rendon you have a boatload of injuries to explain the drop.

“You are capable of thought”..Ohtani played and pitched for the Angels last year until his arm practically fell off and he needed surgery. How do you think Rendon’s teammates feel when he goes on the IL for the slightest injury? To take the 700+ ABs that Marcus Semien took last year for the Rangers requires playing thru all kinds of bumps, bruises and injuries and the benefit to your team could be a World Series victory like the one that Semien led(along with A.Garcia & C.Seagar).

Why did I have such a strong feeling that Rendon would be on an extended IL stint again after 20 games. It might be the worst injury bad luck in the whole majors but I have to agree with the post up above saying it sure doesn’t seem like Rendon is impatient on the IL and pining to get back onto the field and help the team. I’ve never seen him quoted as saying, “Totally sucks I’m injured again but I’m gonna work like crazy on the IL to get back on the field asap to help the team win. I really want to play”. Instead he is quoted saying he thinks it will be an extended stay on the IL and that’s it. No wonder Angels fans are frustrated.

“I’m definitely not going to be back in the 10-day window,” Rendon said. “It’s been four years running now. So I was angry for a few days, frustrated, mad, everything you could imagine because the game keeps getting taken away from me, right? I want to win, and I want to be out there. I do everything in my power to stay out there, and it seems like nothing is working.”

Those that should be really upset with Rendon are people like Boras. Why? Because each time there’s a Rendon, his statistical outliers affect the mean, and when front offices and stat guys review stats in the context of offering a contract, it can (and will) impact what they’re willing to give players, ie: Snell, Monty, etc.

Yeah, I certainly didn’t mean that as an homage to Boras’ greatness or popularity.

I simply meant that it’s his own clients screwing him and getting screwed when things like this happen.

Frankly, I don’t care if another Boras client ever gets a good deal. OTOH, I don’t care if one does… as long as it’s not another bad one for the Yankees.

Anthony Rendon is the POSTER CHILD of a generation. A generation that had everything handed to them on a silver platter, some took that platter and wanted more. Rendon, and others like him, took what they got and said I’m done working. Yeah, he’s had injuries, but he never does the work to come back stronger. Time to cut bait, let somebody else pay this man-child to sit on his couch.

It’s very similar to an entry level office worker that kicks it until they get the promotion, then they become worthless. All too common these days. Bunch of lazy pieces of garbage.

I’ve had issues with his toughness and ability to play through what appear to be minor injuries such as the bruised bone last year. I still feel that he should have played through it. Hip surgery, tearing a muscle are understandable set backs and both have long-term impacts. With each surgery it just becomes more difficult to come back and be the player that you once were. At this point it is what it is, potential lost. If this year’s spending is any indication of what the future holds, I dont see the Angel’s spending big on free agents any longer. This contract might be a turning point for the organization and how it moves forward in the future.
