Padres Designate Luis Sardinas For Assignment

By charliewilmoth | May 21, 2017 at 6:36pm CDT

The Padres have announced that they’ve designated infielder Luis Sardinas for assignment. The move comes in the wake of this afternoon’s news that the team had claimed another infielder, Chase d’Arnaud, from the Red Sox.

Sardinas only turned 24 this week, has played in parts of four big-league seasons, and can play shortstop, second, or third. But he’s been a significant part of the Padres’ infield struggles this season, batting a meager .163/.226/.163 over 53 plate appearances thus far. The Padres have ranked last in the NL in fWAR at both second and short so far this year, and have been fourth worst in the league at third base. While Sardinas hasn’t taken the bulk of the playing time at any of those positions, he hasn’t helped, and there’s perhaps some hope that replacing Sardinas with d’Arnaud will move the needle somewhat.

Sardinas reached the big leagues with the Rangers at 20 and appeared at one point to be a significant asset (rating in top 100 prospects lists for MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus), although a large part of that perception likely stemmed from his age relative to the levels at which he played as opposed to his performances there. He’s been traded three times in less than three years, with the diminishing returns in each deal corresponding with his falling value as he struggled to get established in the big leagues. He headed to the Brewers organization prior to the 2015 season along with Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan for Yovani Gallardo, then to the Mariners for Ramon Flores the next winter. The Padres acquired him for a player to be named last August.

Well if you’re a shortstop and you can’t stick with the Padres…

I sure wish they would give Córdoba some time at SS.
That kid is NOT overmatched at the plate so let’s see him in the infield.
I’m guessing they do not like what they’ve seen from his glove if they release Sardinas and bring in another infielder instead.
With this a throw away season anyway……give him a game a week at SS!

My guess is that they are gambling Aybar might generate even a small amount of trade value so they are keeping him at SS until July.

Cordoba can’t play shortstop. He’s truly terrible there.

You can’t base his play on the few games he’s been there this year. If he were to play everyday, I’m sure he would play better. Aybar is a nice veteran presence, but I’d flip them and let Aybar be the utility guy. Schimpf is garbage. He hits the occasional HR and he does walk, but usually K’s. Send him to AAA and let Aybar fill in at SS and platoon 3B with Spangy. Let Cordoba have a shot at SS for good 30 day period and see what he can do.

What’s probably gonna happen is they will send him to AA next year and let him play SS everyday. The question is what happens to Urias? I’d assume he’d either be the 2b at El Paso or SD next year. I mean the kid just keeps raking. Would love for the two of them to play together because they could be our 6/4 combo for a long time coming if Cordoba gets some time.

When the garbage man hits 25 home runs you will be glad padres ignored you. You were prbly one of the doubters who thought Gyorko couldn’t hit…now look @ him in St. Louis…stud…his manager raves about him. And playing a great third base.

He did hit when he was in sd his 2nd year he was never the same
Third year he still struggled and was sent down
He came back up and started to hit

Schimpf is, what, 28? No reason for him to go to AAA to block a real prospect. He’s a TTO player and not useful for the next good Padres team. But he’s at least interesting.

But Cordoba – one of the reasons he never got out of rookie ball with St. Louis is because they couldn’t find a defensive position for him. The fact that the Padres are playing him in left field is pretty telling.

I don’t think he’ll get claimed. He will be lost in the vacuum called The El Paso Chalupas

Sardinas has regressed for a past couple years. He could not beat out Aybar. He could not hit and had no internal clock in the field. A career minor leaguer but he was worth a free look. Develop Córdoba and Urias⚾️
