Free Agent Notes: LoMo, Phillies, Rangers, Giants

By Jeff Todd | February 9, 2018 at 9:07pm CDT

Logan Morrison remains one of quite a few players still waiting for a new contract after a strong 2017 season. Just where he’ll fit remains unclear. The Red Sox have had contact with Morrison’s reps, per Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston (via Twitter), though he seems mostly to be a backup plan as Boston continues to try to work things out with J.D. Martinez. It probably doesn’t help that the Sox already added a lefty-hitting first baseman this winter in Mitch Moreland, but both players could surely coexist on the roster with a DH slot still open and the right-handed-hitting Hanley Ramirez available to share time at both spots.

  • We’ve long heard of the Royals as an interesting possibility for LoMo, as Morrison hails from the Kansas City area and the team may well have a notable opening if Eric Hosmer departs. Of course, the Royals are still hoping to land Hosmer at the moment. But if that changes, sources suggest to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick (Twitter link), Morrison would be very interested in talking with his hometown team. From an outside perspective, it seems unlikely that the Royals will dedicate a huge amount of cash for any non-Hosmer free agent. Then again, there could be a nice value opportunity here, particularly since Morrison ought to be an easy player to market at an opportune moment for the franchise.
  • The Phillies’ search for a starter remains a bit of a wild card on the market. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand has the latest, citing sources for the proposition that the Phils are taking an “aggressive” approach, though it’s not entirely clear what that means. While the organization has been tied, at least speculatively, to a wide variety of hurlers, the indication from Feinsand is that the organization is mostly looking currently at one-year targets rather than more significant hurlers. As Feinsand notes, it’s possible to imagine quite a few names that could conceivably fit. Indeed, many of the free agent starters remain available, so a Phillies team in an opportunistic position could yet take any number of different courses in filling out its staff.
  • Speaking of teams with some reputed interest in high-end pitching, the Rangers have long been said to have at least a foot in the premium pool even as they have signed a variety of hurlers to manageable deals. GM Jon Daniels says the door is still open, at least a bit, to making free-agent splash, as MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports. “I don’t think we can rule it out,” says Daniels, who also made clear that a major new addition isn’t particularly likely. As for what the slow movement means, Daniels says that’s still an open question. “I don’t think anybody has ever been in this position,” he said. “I’m not sure anybody knows what to expect.”
  • While the Giants have little spending space if they are to remain beneath the luxury line, that makes minor-league signings all the more important for the organization. Per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter), the club will put eyes on former ace Tim Lincecum when he holds a planned showcase. Likewise, the San Francisco front office will scout the anticipated free agent spring camp in search of some useful assets.

Mitch Moreland was a Red Sox in 2017 – they re-signed him this winter, but the wording makes it sound like he was not on the team last season.

You are right, Johan. It could be better written. When you see something that’s wrong, sometimes it’s good to say something. Other times, it’s good to say to yourself, “My left eye is the eye of the eagle. My right eye is the eye of the tiger. Wisdom, you are my prey and I will feast on nothing else.”

I think Hosmer doesn’t want to play for San Diego because that is obviously the best offer he got. As far as position players go JD Martinez is holding everything up because everyone knows the Red Sox are going to add a bat & everyone is waiting for Boston to move on from him. If Martinez takes the 1 yr deal from Arizona than that opens up Hosmer to Boston so he isn’t going to sign before JD. Also KC is waiting on Hosmer because they want him back and they believe he would also like to go back there over San Diego so they are not moving on to plan B until he makes his decision.
Darvish & Arrietta believe they should get more years than teams want to offer and that leaves Cobb & Lynn in limbo because they want the most money they could get knowing the Cubs will spend the most. I believe Darvish is really holding out for the Dodgers to clear up some money so they could sign him and not go over the tax

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union Tribute reported that it was believed that the Royals offer was much larger than the Padres. To make it even better, taxes in California does not help the Padres case. So I’m sure it’s not that he doesn’t want to play for San Diego, he just wants more years and more money

Would be interesting to see KC regroup and get LoMo for a lot less and use some of that savings on a FA starter (Lance Lynn, Cobb?) – could even make a short-term offer to Mous to see if he can regain some of his value.

But then you couldn’t offer Moose a QO, don’t need a pricy arm when we aren’t competing either. Love the idea of getting LoMo though. Gives us a hometown player to root for since things look like they are going to be rough.

Agreed. Adding a Lance Lynn would do nothing for that team. He’s not a TOR starter and he’s too pricey for a middle of the pack team. Might as well let Jessie Hahn take those innings up for a fraction of the price.

The KC offer of 7/149 was never confirmed. Best guess is that Boras had one of his lackeys float it in the media to try to create a bidding war, which obviously didn’t work.

A pillow deal is the worst possible scenario for Martinez. First of all, on next years market, he’s a 2nd or 3rd tier bat. Second, he’ll probably be hit with a QO next year limiting his value and ON TOP OF THAT he’ll be a year older.
He posted a WAR below 2 in 2016. There is no reason for him to be declining $125m.

Yes, only one QO for a player’s career. JDM has yet to be given one. The Tigers signed him after the Astros released him, and the D’backs were prevented from giving him one because he was traded during the season. He would definitely be hit with one next season if he signed a 1 year deal.

    Im not gonna lie,
I dont want Philly to pay out the nose for a starter. We have Sixto/Kilyome/Jojo Romero/Thomas Eshleman/Zach Eflin/Ranger Suarez/Adonis Medina all in the minor league system. I know pitching prospects have a high bust rate, but I’d be willing to bet that at least one of them turns out pretty solid.

yea,but half those guys are more than a year away from The Show, so do you just let your MLB roster stand still until they arrive? I agree with you though, the Phils time to make a big FA starter signing isnt right now, IMO. 2018 will be a great year to see who can take the next step forward: Eickhoff, VV, pivetta, leiter, lively, thompson, et. BUT… signing a Darvish/Arrieta still leaves 3 spots for these guys to battle it out and would make this team surprisingly competitive

Yeah, I’m fine with the Phillies only going one year on a SP, but honestly, I’m fine if they don’t add anyone.

I’d like to see some more innings out of the young guys and really see what they can do. I’d like to see Eshelman, whether Eflin another year removed from the surgery, Thompson, and any of the others can make a step forward.

It only takes one guy to have a long term impact, so sure, they can sign an innings eater for one year, but I’m not so sure that’s a better long term strategy that finding out if any of those guys can truly pitch effectively at the MLB level.

Sanchez is the only top 30 prospect on there. Medina is top 100 on some and not others. The rest of them have a shot at being quality pitchers but you don’t save a spot for a B level starter who might be good enough some day.

as a Phillies fan and the way the market is playing out, why not really overpay for 2 top starters for 1 year guaranteed with a club and player option for the 2nd year. If they blow it’s fine because you have kids on the way and if they are great you flip them the 2nd year because the kids are on their way or you keep 1 and let him be the Jamie Moyer type to show the kids the ropes. plus you can never have too many arms.

How about this: Tommy Joseph to KC for Jason Hammel and $7-8M. Gives Philly a veteran arm who will eat some innings (and maybe resurrect his career) and gives KC a controllable, if mediocre, 1B for a couple of years while a rebuild happens. Then we could stop all the silly talk about signing Hosmer for a billion dollars. I love Eric Hosmer, but not at that price on this team.

As for Hosmer, the Padres may not be good yet, but they look as if they will be very solid in 2 years time. If Hoz, whos still very young, has a lucrative offer on the table, take it now.

JDM just isn’t a fit in Boston. Hanley makes him redundant.

Plus I think they’d like to stay away from the full time DH-type like they had w Papi. I think it helps to cycle guys through DH to keep them off their feet for a day. JDM would literally be 6th on the OF depth chart. And that’s worth 7/180?! Right…

Not sure how Boston can add a big bat really. It would either be full time DH or platoon. That leads to….LoMo? Duda? CarGo? Fine, whatever.

    Eff Boras.

          crazy stacked!

          Indians: Kluber / Carrasco / Salazar / Bauer / Clevinger / Tomlin
          Anderson

The Phillies have too many 4-5 starters:
Nola / Eickhoff / Velasquez / Pivetta then who???
Lively / Thompson / Eflin / Leiter / and the AAA pitchers

Would love to see the Phillies sign any of: Arrieta, Lynn, Cobb (3 years deals)
1 Year deal to any of: Lackey, Garcia, Miley

Or trade for Archer / M. Duffy and Colome for Franco / Williams / Hernandez / Joseph / Lively and Thompson
          or:
          Duffy & Kennedy/Hammel for::Joseph, Franco, Williams,, Thompson/ Eflin

How the Cards aren’t in on LoMo is baffling. No real 1st baseman, and he’s not going to break the bank. Let Carp play 2nd and bump wong to a backup role, and move carp around the diamond like usual when people need a break. Just got Ozuna, might as well upgrade your offense further.

I’m not worried–2 for the price of JDM–offer 5 year deals with 2 or 3 yr. opt-outs if they want

them. Moustakas for 3 B and Hos @ 1B–work a deal for JBJ and have Devers move to LF.

Don’t think the Red Sox pay JDM $125 M.
    Maybe JDM gets 5/$75 M.
The Red Sox can get by just as they are currently but:
    They may add Nunez?
I would also like to see them get a LRP.
A long shot is Tony Watson but he’s not the pitcher he was..
Think the Red Sox find another way to fill there LRP needs though.
I would also like to see the Red Sox get an additional SP.
A long shot here is Vargas, for the right price, and he could also be a LRP or perhaps ERod goes to the pen until he is sound?
FanGraphs projects the Red Sox to win 91 games.
That should be good enough to make the playoffs.
I say wait until the trade deadline Aug 1st and see when you can get.
And just pick up peripheral players along the way as you go.

LOL. Where’s your proof he’s been offered $125M?
If you’re citing anything from this site it’s a “rumor”.
Remember when Boras was implying JDM would get $200M?
Did you notice that Cain, who has a higher WAR, got only $75-80M? (FACT)
Cain is also a much better fielder. (FACT)
So your guess is as good as mine “boss”.
I’m just showing you where my guess is coming from and why?
So where’s your “proof” he was offered $125M?
Does he actually think he will get more that $125M?
        He’s a good player worth 5/$80M.
Keep dreaming for $125M or more …. LOL.
