The White Sox have outrighted right-hander Dylan Covey to Triple-A Charlotte, thus opening up a spot on their 40-man roster, James Fegan of The Athletic reports on Twitter.
A fourth-round pick of the A’s in 2013, Covey spent the first few years of his professional career in Oakland’s system before joining the White Sox in the December 2016 Rule 5 draft. The 26-year-old Covey ended up playing a fairly prominent role in Chicago last season, but he struggled mightily in his first taste of major league action.
Across 70 innings (18 appearances, 12 starts), Covey logged a 7.71 ERA/7.20 FIP with 5.27 K/9 and 4.37 BB/9. While Covey did keep the ball on the ground at a respectable clip (48.5 percent), the fly balls he allowed tended to lead to disaster. In fact, he surrendered 2.57 home runs per nine – the worst mark on the team and the third-worst figure in the majors among those who amassed at least 70 frames.

Making room for Dickerson?!
whosyourmomma
I’d be happy with that. Need another left handed hitter plus makes trading Avi easier. Maybe pull off a bigger deal like – Snell & Dickerson & Span for Avi, Engel, Leury Garcia & Dunning. Just through that idea quickly so don’t kill me.

Are the rays still high on snell? Don’t see them parting ways with him if they are rebuilding completely. And I don’t see that trade being enough to justify trading snell.
Priggs89
Honestly, I don’t really love it from the Sox perspective. I’d love to add Blake Snell to this young rotation, but I don’t see him as being THAT valuable right now. Outside of a RIDICULOUSLY good 2015 season, I don’t think he has really been all that spectacular. Quite frankly, I’m not sold on him being all that much better than Dunning going forward. To also throw in 2 26 year olds who combined for over 5 WAR last season is too much for my liking.
Personally, I’d rather keep Dunning and trade Avi and/or Leury for the best prospect(s) they can get at the deadline. They most likely won’t get anyone of the caliber of Snell, but if Avi puts on a solid show during the first half, I think he may finally start convincing other GM’s that his 2017 season was for real. If he’s still mashing and they still aren’t convinced enough to give up a legit prospect, I’m not at all opposed to keeping him around. He’s only 26 years old, and if he can hit even close to how he did last year, he’s plenty young enough to be a valuable piece for the Sox going forward.

Dane Dunning would be the only piece going back to the Rays that makes much sense with their decision to pretty much tear things apart this offseason.
I don’t see this making a whole lot of sense from the White Sox perspective either. While Blake Snell would be a nice add as a controllable southpaw rotation piece I think the White Sox would be leary of adding a broken down player in Denard Span who will turn 34 later this month. Both Span and Corey Dickerson would be fighting for the same role in 2018 as left-handed hitting DH’s who could occasionally play a corner outfield spot. I think the White Sox would be more than happy to add Dickerson to their mix where he could become the primary DH. I believe the White Sox are more than happy going into the 2018 season with left-handed hitting Nicky Delmonico as their semi-regular in LF.
tim2686
no need for the bigger deal. the guy is making $6 million. if you get him for a low end prospect, like the Ray’s got for Odorizzi I say go for it. Dunning is out of the question for now.
bluejays12345
Haha. That actually would be a good idea for them
Phillies2017
A bit surprised a 26 year old starter with 3 option years remaining cleared waivers. It’s easy to look at his numbers in ’17 and dismiss him, but he was R5’d from Double-A, where he had only logged 29.1 innings. Furthermore, his minor league numbers are pretty good. Not a high ceiling but potential innings eater.
kenneth cole
If his ceiling is a back end innings eater (curve is too inconsistent) plenty of teams have guys like that in their system. They’re not exactly a dime a dozen
Jack Taddy
They are exactly a dime a dozen..

Or, clearing space for an Abreu deal to the Cards for multiple prospects.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I think if that was going to happen, it would’ve happened by now. The Cardinals brought in their power hitter with Ozuna and the White Sox never sounded that serious about trading Abreu. They listened to offers like every team does on most of their players. The White Sox need him to be a mentor to the young guys and the Cardinals are good enough to grab a playoff spot without him.
Aaron Sapoznik
It would appear the White Sox are ready to add another player to their 40-man roster and eventually to the 25-man active one for opening day. The most likely scenario has them adding a free agent bat, probably one that hits with power from the left side. They could also be ready to pounce on Corey Dickerson via waivers or a trade since he was surprisingly designated for assignment late Saturday by the Rays.
GM Rick Hahn suggested just this past week as spring training was getting under way that the White Sox were likely to make more moves via free agency and/or trade to solidify their opening day roster.
stlsoxfan
They absolutely need a left handed bat to slot between Abreu and Avi.i think it complements players like Davidson and Delmonico and it makes the tem more competitive overall. Even if a platoon bat like Cargo it would make watching the team more fun because they will win more games. Again, this would not be a bank breaker and the Sox payroll is low-mid range overall. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
FriendOfBoras
It would sure be nice to see this guy in a Cubs uniform. Great clubhouse presence.
Aaron Sapoznik
The only scenario I can envision Dylan Covey with the Cubs would be if he was wearing a red and white suit and brought great clubhouse presents!
FriendOfBoras
That’s about the dumbest comment I’ve read all month.
Aaron Sapoznik
What can I say? Your original comment inspired me. Between the two of us we could be “dumb and dumber”. lol
FriendOfBoras
He would be beneficial to the Cubs, that’s all I was saying. Not sure why your trolling me.
Aaron Sapoznik
Seriously? If Dylan Covey can’t maintain a 40-man roster spot on a rebuilding White Sox club he would be a good fit on a Cub team that has World Series ambitions in 2018? Because he’s such a quality pitcher or, at least a “great clubhouse presence”? Please…
And now I’m a troll for making light of your silly comment? Perhaps I should have been more vitriolic like the majority of trolls.

Hopefully we don’t see Covey again. Games he started were virtual forfeits.
