The Cubs have claimed righty Cory Mazzoni off waivers from the Dodgers, according to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo (via Twitter). That’s a reversal of a recent transaction in which the 28-year-old went from Chicago to Los Angeles.
Mazzoni has had no success in minimal MLB opportunities and was knocked around this spring. He’s also not far removed from a significant shoulder surgery that limited him to just two appearances in 2016 and 38 1/3 total innings last year. Evidently, though, these large-budget contenders have identified something about the former second-round draft pick.
bigcubsfan
Lol.
Kenleyfornia74
So did Thompson clear waivers or not
BlueSkyLA
This reminds me of the player who was traded for a PTNL and he became the PTNL. Probably that’s happened more than once.
Well, I hope Mazzoni didn’t waste a couple of airline tickets.
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
What’s $250 bucks and a 6 hour flight. (4 hours with the time difference. ) to him. His salary is like 540k. Within 2-4 years minimum salary for all baseball players will be 1.5mil. Before signing bonuses.
Jack Taddy
Yeah screw him I hope he had 3 wasted flights!
Shane Newbanks 2
The organization pays for those tickets not the player.

Looks like someone is suffering from a bad case of Too Literal Disease.
Sky14
That was John McDonald.

Harry Chiti back around 1963
Ully
Ah, the Chiti deal.
Aaron Sapoznik
These new Cubs love playing children’s games. Manager Joe Maddon’s favorite is musical chairs with his lineups and now the front office is playing hot potato with Cory Mazzoni and the Dodgers!
djtommyaces
That’s not just the Cubs. That’s baseball now. Trying to push a player into their minor league system in hopes they don’t get claimed
Aaron Sapoznik
Baseball now is putting big, slow left-handed power hitters with a penchant for striking out in the leadoff spot. I noticed that Bucky Showalter utilized none other than 32-year old, 6’3″, 230 first baseman Chris Davis as his #1 hitter today versus the Twins. Davis is coming off of a 2017 triple slash of .215/.309/.423 with 195 SO’s in 524 PA’s. Apparently Showalter found some left over stupid pills that Joe Maddon was taking at this same time last year.
wrigleywannabe
from what we heard, he got them .”from the same doctor you use.
wrigleywannabe
P.S. Schwarber’s OBP warranted trying him at the top.
jbaker3170
PS: His OBP% was .315 last year. That’s not very good
carlote
Schwarber is a joke in LF, he is a DH type of player only
Kycubfan
Pretty sure he leads off and plays of for the cubs
michaelw
Yep he’s a joke. He did better than the whole dodgers team yesturday. Your the joke trolling on acubs board being mad cause you’re team $ ux lol
wrigleywannabe
1. When you win a WS title and are widely respected, by payers and other managers, as being a darn good manager, we will listen
2. This has no correlation to hot potato.
michaelw
Arron – What a moron post. Who cares. He won’t play on either team. Hope the LAD can do a better job of hitting today.
Pretty sad against a back-up for mad Bum vs their ace. Wasted game for CK. too bad he didn’t have back up. That’s why he should opt out.
Aaron Sapoznik
Lighten up everybody! Hard to believe a sarcastic, off-the-cuff comment has garnered so much response let alone the vitriol. There are a whole lot of thin skinned and constipated fans on this site who take everything so seriously. “Too Literal Disease” indeed!
srechter
This dude was freakishly good in the minors last year to have been so unfathomly awul in the majors.
socalbum
Strange move by Dodgers to put Mazzoni on waivers when it did not need the 40 man roster spot and he has a remaining minor league option. Another move coming?
tim815
The Cubs had two spots remaining when they tried to get Mazzoni through waivers.
Two really good front offices think Mazzoni is worth fighting over. While quite a few others scratch their heads.
I’ve got nothing.
norcalblue
Yup
leprechaun
These are both successful teams who should get benefit of the doubt, something with this guy must be fixable

Cubs answer to cards signing Holland
michaelw
Holland will be a bust thats why no one wanted him. The Cards need SP and people who can hit. 15 SO. But Card fans are in denial. Oh but they got Ozuna the guy who did great last year and will bring them a division title and back to the WS. How many times did he strike out 3. Lol. Think the OF for the Cards was 0-12 fine group of men. Holland. Lol. It take more than Holland for St L one day you will wake up Waino
michaelw
Hey Waino Cubs don’t need to answer to old injured Holland lol. If you’re happy with that. We aren’t the ones neededing a BP or SP or hitters. Lol
Pretty sad yesturday against a old injured Mets team. if I were you I’d just keep quiet before you embarrass yourself.
Wainofan
Butthurt over a sarcastic comment, talking trash over one game against one of best pitchers in baseball, referring to holland as batting practice pitching pitcher, but I should be quiet before I embarrass myself? Really?
Cubguy13
I think BP stood for bullpen in his statement, not batting practice
Phillies2017
Mazzoni is actually quite interesting. He has a FB that averages about 94 and can control it rather well. Nevertheless, I think he’s finds his way through waivers at some point.
They need to be careful though. Yes, he has promise, but if he spends the whole season traveling back and forth from Chicago to LA, on top of taxi squad duty, it could turn out to be a lost season (Peter O’Brien last season). And Mazzoni cant afford that at his age.
lowtalker1
No he sucks
