So ATL trades (at the very least) a 1st rd pick and most likely rotation staple in Kyle Wright/Soroka-type, along with taking more depth from the farm for an elite-level player in Machado that has stated he wants to play SS, when we have Swanson (though currently on the DL) doing well? Either we don’t believe Machado and test him on his willingness to play 3B and we don’t believe Swanson can be a long-term staple or we really think we have the pieces to withstand a hit to the farm AND compete well into the playoffs.
It’s encouraging we can beat some of the best teams (SF homestand notwithstanding), but that’s A LOT of risk. I’m glad that’s not my decision to make. Tex 2.0!
I’ve had similar thoughts and reservations. Would Machado be an upgrade at SS? Absolutely..but if you are the Braves, you would MUCH rather have him play third. But as you said, Machado wants to play SS. And then there is the cost of training him for what would amount to something like 250ish AB.
I am more in the camp to keep developing arms this year and see how it plays out. If this were trading for MadBum (and he was healthy) with 1.5 years of control and we thought there’d be interest in re-signing him (he’s a NC native, FWIW & good ole boy), then I’d support a franchise-altering trade, but we really are still figuring out if Folty, Newcomb, etc are pieces to the puzzle or trade pieces. In an ideal scenario, we get starts from Soroka, Allard, possibly Wright to get them a taste, while seeing major strides in Newcomb (have already) and consistency from Folty.
I think he’d play third base without friction for 2-3 months. I doubt he wants to set the tone heading into free agency that he’s not a team player. Ultimately he doesn’t have a choice.
Wow, you really don’t think Machado could bring back 3 of a teams top 15 prospects, especially this early in the season with the way he’s playing? If they were to extend him definately that at minimum.
Orioles get nothing from the extension though, and no one is giving up 3 top 15 prospects for a rental. Just not going to happen. Not even if it was Trout. Not in today’s game.
Extension wouldn’t make the return any better considering it will basically be market rate so really the only surplus value the acquiring team would get is having him on the team for 2018 which they would have gotten anyway without the extension.
