Mets Notes: deGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Familia, Bruce

By Steve Adams | June 19, 2018 at 5:15pm CDT

Having experienced a precipitous fall after an 11-1 start to the season, the Mets are reportedly willing to listen to offers on the majority of their roster. While the Mets are said to have a preference to retain their controllable players, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News argues that the team would be foolish not to listen to offers on aces Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. Ackert cites a source with another NL club in agreeing with yesterday’s report from Ken Rosenthal that the Mets are more willing to discuss trading Syndergaard than deGrom, despite the fact that Syndergaard comes with an extra year of club control. There’s a divide in the Mets’ front office about whether to even entertain offers, per Ackert, who adds that there’s nothing serious in the works at this time despite a number of teams checking in on both pitchers. The Yankees, she adds, have yet to make an inquiry.

More out of Queens…

  • Mike Puma of the New York Post writes that some in the industry believe the Mets are making deGrom and Syndergaard available without the intent of actually trading either and could instead then push alternatives like Zack Wheeler on the teams that inquire about deGrom and Syndergaard. Wheeler is only controllable through 2019, has a longer injury history and doesn’t have great overall results on the season, of course, but he’s been quite a bit better over the past month (3.68 ERA, 3.01 FIP, 34-to-11 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings). In addition to Wheeler, Puma adds that both Asdrubal Cabrera and Jeurys Familia are likely to be marketed in trades in the coming weeks.
  • Following yesterday’s trade of Kelvin Herrera from the Royals to the Nationals, Tim Britton of The Athletic examines what type of impact the swap could have on the Mets’ efforts to deal Familia (subscription required). Familia and Herrera are both 28 years of age, both free agents at season’s end, and are both earning just north of $7.9MM. The two are also rather comparable from a statistical standpoint — at least on a career basis. As Britton notes, the early nature of Herrera’s trade will remove an alternative for bullpen-needy teams to pursue if and when the Mets shop Familia, which could help the Mets to create more demand and further drive up the bidding. Noting that the Royals’ return was somewhat lessened by the fact that the Nats took on all of Herrera’s remaining salary, Britton opines that the Mets should be willing to pay the remainder of Familia’s salary to enhance the deal, adding that the club should aim to procure one high-end talent rather than several lower-tier players (as they did when acquiring three bullpen prospects from the Red Sox in last July’s Addison Reed swap).
  • The Mets announced this afternoon that they’ve placed Jay Bruce on the 10-day disabled list due to a sore right hip, recalling right-hander Tim Peterson from Triple-A Las Vegas in his place. Bruce’s trip to the DL is retroactive to Monday. That injury leaves the Mets without a true backup outfielder on the roster. Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto and Jose Bautista are the most experienced outfielders on the roster, but it seems Dominic Smith will be logging time in the outfield as well; he’s starting in left field tonight, the team announced. MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo tweeted earlier that Wilmer Flores may also see some time in the outfield in the near future.

The Mets would rather and try to sell teams magic beans (Wheeler) than seize the opportunity to turbocharge a rebuild by trading deGrom or Syndergaard.

Right? Like GMs aren’t intelligent enough to see through the old “bait and switch”. If I’m calling about Syndergaard or deGrom, and Alderson tries to peddle me Wheeler, that line’s going dead. Sounds like the Mets just want someone to take out the garbage for them.

Yeah wheeler is garbage lmaoo. The guy has stuff to the fullest and can hit 99 mph with a fastball that moves. Wheeler has stuff that teams will find attractive no doubt about it such an ignorant comment probably from a person who has never seen him pitch.

I’ve seen him pitch and I’ve seen his numbers. If teams want a SP who’s made a career of unfulfilled potential and expectations they’ll call Jeff Samarzdija. Oh wait, the Giants already have him locked up. Wasn’t it New York’s own Bill Parcells who said, “I am my record.”? Wheeler is his record, and nobody’s gonna want that.

“Wheeler has stuff that teams will find attractive . . . “

OK, let’s do this slowly. We are talking about the Mets trading Wheeler to a team which is contending this year. Now take a look at his bb-ref page as linked above. What exactly would a contending team use Wheeler for? He’s got a career and season WHIP of almost 1.4. If Wheeler is an improvement over what a team already has it probably isn’t contending for anything other than draft picks.

Seriously, he doesn’t just have “stuff” at this point, he is 28 and has a track record of pretty poor ML performance behind him. Were he a free agent he might not be able to find a ML deal, although some of that would be due to health concerns. The Mets have more invested in him than anyone else is likely to.

“no doubt about it such an ignorant comment probably from a person who has never seen him pitch.”

That comment sounds like it comes from a person who has never seen his stats.

Indians could get him and convert him into a reliever. Got good stuff, reminds me of Hunter Strickland a little bit, not like it’s a good comparison but Strickland is a quality arm if you look behind his awful personality.

Wheeler is a decent find for a team seeking a 4th or 5th starter.
Don’t go by the past numbers or the ridiculous and unproven WHIP and FIP and K’s per nine innings.

ERA and IP per game is what you look at.
A guy who averages 6 IP per start with a decent ERA for a team that scores runs is what a playoff seeking team wants to add for the latter part of the season.

The Yankees seeking him makes no sense as they are expected to make and go deep into the playoffs. The Yankees need a Degrom not a Wheeler. A team like the Cardinals,Braves, Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers need a Wheeler type to help them get to the post season.

His numbers are significantly better than many of the pitchers that have been considered “significant” acquisitions by teams in need of pitching.
He doesn’t have the rep of a Thor or DeGrom, but he’s no slouch either!
Think of his potential success with an offense and defense around him.

Do you really think in your logical mind that the Yankees wouldn’t take wheeler on that staff in a heartbeat? He has been up and down and suffered through injuries no doubt about that and since the Mets acquired him for Beltran I wouldn’t argue the fact that for the most part he hasn’t lived up to his expectations but it doesn’t deny the fact he has good life and movement on his fastball, with a solid change, and decent curveball. If you really believe in your mind that when he’s a free agent he wouldn’t get a Major League Deal? then you sir really are oblivious lol.

          “He doesn’t have the rep of a Thor or DeGrom . . . “

Wheeler doesn’t deserve the rep of Syndegaard or deGrom, both of whom have posted borderline dominant numbers. Wheeler has yet to post numbers that are even OK, let alone dominant.

          “ . . . but he’s no slouch either!”

Yeah, he is. If someone who performs as poorly as Wheeler has to date can’t reasonably be called a slouch I’m not sure who else could.

“Think of his potential success with an offense and defense around him.”

That the same offense and defense that play when Syndegaard and deGrom pitch? Why is it that both of them have been able to win with these Mets while Wheeler has not? Wheeler isn’t being held back by a bad Mets team, he’s one of the reasons the Mets are bad.

Remember when Charlie Morton wasn’t good, and then he was? Wheeler has incredible stuff. Maybe he’s a pitching plan (Houston) change away from making good on all his talent with performance. If I’m a team like the Mariners, I could definitely see myself wanting Wheeler in some role. It’s likely his performance would take a pretty significant jump in relief.

      Furthering the Wheeler discussion.
Tommy John took 1975 and 1976 seasons off to come back from surgery.
Wheeler missed two years and is now pitching like he is capable of pitching.

Facts are if the Yankees want Degrom Torres needs to be the focal point of the deal and if not take care and could care less nor the Mets. Yanks got Torres for Chapman we are talking about the best starter in the national league with the best ERA who should have 10 plus wins. Yeah it’s going to take Torres and something more for Degrom

You know good trades hurt because both teams profit from who they get.
DeGrom is worth a Torres, but the Yankees are simply not going to trade a 21 year old guy that could be rookie of the year for arguably the best pitcher in the NL for sure. That’s why this trade is not going to happen.
But let’s not get ridiculous saying Torres, top 5 and 10 prospect…he’s not Jesus Christ you know!

Jacob deGrom and Syndergaard are proven ALL STARS and possibly HALL OF FAMERS if they stay healthy. None of the pitchers have any scouting on Gleyber Torres and once they do, that’s when you’ll know if Torres is worth keeping or not. Yankee fans find it reasonable that they received Torres for Chapman, and ridiculous that anyone would bring his name up in a trade for deGrom. In reality it is perfectly reasonable for the Mets to ask for Torres in the trade, AND reasonable that the Yankees say no. That is part of the business of trading budding and certified stars.

I’m sure someone in the Mets FO has called the Giants weekly over the past several years asking to speak to a supervisor about a refund for Wheeler. SF should have signed Carlos Beltran to a one day contract last winter just so they could send him back to NY for Wheeler, then DFA Wheeler who would have then been claimed by the Mets.

Here’s how it all goes down…Jeter trades former Yankee prospects to Mets for DeGrom and Syndergaard, then sends the two of them to the Bronx for more prospects. The captain remains loyal!

Mets vs. Yankees….in any arena it’s Dumb vs. Einstein. 2 banners versus 27….now do the math of existence….and percentage since, say, 1980. Meh. Terrible ownership, poor decisions all the way around. More meh.

the thing with the yankees is they have a great young core of hitters and then other than severino, all their pitchers are either towards the end of their prime/careers or too young to contribute (sheffield and adams). so if you do nothing, then you go into the playoffs with severino and tanaka to battle sale and porcello, kluber and bauer, verlander and cole. yanks have the worst 1-2 punch of the bunch. lets say they go get machado or harper in offseason, well you still have the same pitching dilemma next year with the same crazy good lineup. so unless you want to waste all that talent and take your chances with tanaka and sonny gray pitching gems in the playoffs, it makes sense to deal some kind of gleyber torres, andujar, adams, sheffield package for degrom or syndergaard

I think you forgot about Germa’n and Loaisiga ! The Yankees are not going to trade their kids for either Degrom or Syndergaard for that price. Besides, the Yankees will be dealing come free agent signing as they’re under the cap.

The Yankees don’t need to trade Gleyber. He’s untouchable at this point!! The Yankees have Clint Frazier, Tyler Austin, Aaron Hicks, McKinney, Florial, Austin Romine, Sheffield , Swanson, chance Adams, Tyler wade and much more available for trade talks.

Braves would be willing to a deal for Zack Wheeler. He is a Dallas, Georgia Native. I could see swapping a MLB ready prospect for him like Fried or Sims plus another. The Braves would use Wheeler in the pen, maybe groom him for closer. Could advance the prospect quality to Koby Allard if Conforto or Nimmo would be included in the deal.

Went off the rails a bit at the end there, but Sims for Wheeler might get a conversation started.

As a yankee fan my wish list would be , I start talks with the Giants for Bumgarner. He’s lefty which they need, cheap salary to be under luxury tax, and has proven to be a dominant player in the post season. Then add Snell from the Rays young and cheap as well and also a lefty. Plus he owned the Red Sox and Houston so far this year. Also there in need of a lefty bullpen arm Brad Hand. I say unload farm no player is off limits. Yankees have over crowded outfield now with tons of outfield prospects plus Harper is free agent next year. Also infield is loaded and have prospects and players that can step in if they loss andujar and Torres. Don’t forget Machado is free agent. You loss andujar and Torres you make up for it with Harper and Machado or even if you just get one of them makes up for the offense. Yes I love those kids andujar and Torres but we only have Servino then nothing else for starters. We have the worse 1-2 punch of all the good teams right now. They scary thing for the league is we still own best record right now so if they up grade look out League.

Anyone who believes Torres is a trade chip is outside of their minds, the only player I would trade Torres for is Mike Trout, and even that would be a tough call…Torres isn’t going anywhere…Andujar or Chris Drury would be the centrepiece of a deal for pitching and I would include Frazier and a few prospects out of the group of Tyler Wade, Tyler Austin, Estevan Florial, Justus Sheffield, Billy McKinney or Chance Adams…why people seem to think what the Yankees got for Chapman is still the same value makes me shake my head…Torres and company for Chapman was 2 years ago…Torres now is probably the AL ROY and is off the table, anyone who believes different needs to have their head examined

lol. This is delusional. Mike Trout is having arguably one of if not the best season of any position player in modern baseball. He has been the best player in the league since his second year….yet Torres is untouchable? Hopefully a team isn’t stupid enough to take spare parts for a legit talent.

Mike Trout > AL ROY from the past decade. By a lot. The only AL ROY that remotely compares was 2012 AL ROY….Mike Trout.

Aaron Judge had a pretty good ROY compared with that 2012 year they’re both up there.

Totally agree. Torres has developed, earned a starting spot, and is excelling. He’s the Yankees’ 2B of the present and future. When they make a deal for any player this summer it’s fair to say that just about any of their minor leaguers are in play including Andujar. You’d only deal Torres for a player like Trout, Correa, Scherzer, Springer, or Altuve, and none of those guys are going anywhere any way. I’d go so far as to say that Torres for Harper (even if NYY extends Harper) would be a mistake on the part of the Yankees.

Hey umm I was just going to ask. So your saying you would have a tough time trading the best player in baseball still in his prime for a young unproven 2B who plays for the Yankees who has done a great job so far, but has no great scouting reports on him yet?

PLEASE DO NOT CENTER A TRADE WITH ESTEVEN FLORIAL AS THE MAIN PIECE. THE METS WOULD BE IDIOTS. IF THE METS TRADE NOAH OR DEGROM THEN THEY NEED TO ASK FOR CLINT FRAZIER (MUST), Miguel Andujar or Estevan Florial, Justus Sheffield (MUST), and Chance Adams or Clarke Schmidt. Nobody else. I am praying the Mets get Clint Frazier. He is a future hall of famer in my opinion and if we are going to trade a future hall of famer than we need to get one in return ! This is the package swirling around the internet and if it’s true than please do not trade Noah or degrom.

Estevan Florial, RHP Luis Medina, RHP Cody Carroll, OF Billy McKinney. Wtf??? The Mets cannot be this stupid to consider this trade.
