NL Notes: Mets, Braves, Giants, Phillies

By Connor Byrne | June 23, 2018 at 10:30pm CDT

The Mets will send left-hander Jason Vargas to the disabled list and recall righty Chris Flexen from Triple-A, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports on Twitter. Vargas is dealing with a strained calf, thus continuing a disastrous age-35 season for him. After joining the Mets on a two-year, $16MM deal in free agency, Vargas has gone on the DL twice (once for a broken bone in his right hand) and managed horrid numbers in between. With 37 2/3 innings pitched in nine starts, Vargas has averaged just over four frames per appearance and notched an 8.60 ERA/6.55 FIP.

  • Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino is battling right shoulder soreness, which has been a concern throughout the season, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Vizcaino had a cortisone injection this week, per Bowman, and manager Brian Snitker noted that “there are times, he’s going to have to be down just to get him through the year.” Despite the 27-year-old’s shoulder issues, the first-place Braves weren’t interested in ponying up for fellow late-game option Kelvin Herrera, whom the division-rival Nationals acquired from the Royals this week.
  • More on the Braves, who optioned outfielder Preston Tucker to Triple-A on Saturday and recalled right-hander Lucas Sims, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets. Tucker helped hold the fort down in the outfield before the promotion of now-injured super prospect Ronald Acuna in late April, though the former’s output has fallen off dramatically as the season has progressed. After posting a respectable 105 wRC+ in April, Tucker fell to 76 in May and 42 this month.
  • The Giants optioned outfielder Mac Williamson to Triple-A on Saturday and recalled fellow outfielder Austin Slater to replace him. Williamson began the year on a hot streak, but he suffered a concussion in late April and hasn’t gotten back on track since returning May 25. Overall, he has hit a below-average .213/.295/.383 in 105 plate appearances. The Giants’ hope is that he’ll “regain his swing and confidence” by playing every day in the minors, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes.
  • Phillies reliever Pat Neshek began a rehab assignment at the Single-A level Saturday, though it’s still not known when he could return to the majors, Kyle Melnick of MLB.com relays. After Neshek enjoyed an excellent season between Philly and Colorado in 2017, the Phillies brought him back on a two-year, $16MM deal over the winter. But shoulder and forearm injuries have prevented the 37-year-old from taking the mound this season.

Love watching the free falling Braves. Let them suffer for being cheap and for all the excuses not to go for it this year.

And I’m gonna love watching them rip through all the NL teams the next several years. No since in mortgaging the farm to go for it this year when the next several years, the Braves will be even better!

The penny pinching Braves have the second best winning percentage in the NL. That money saved may be enough to entice Manny Machado to slide into the number three or four slot next to the 2018 NL MVP, Freddie Freeman.

The Braves should not go “all in” this year! Maybe a minor move or 2 for cost controlled players beyond this season, but not for rentals!

Much like the Brewers last year the Braves have more then 1 hole and would be better to wait until the winter

Is there a more disgraceful team than the Mets? Lousy owners. Lousy management. Mostly lousy players. Lousy minor league system. As Barney Fife once said, “Dogs. Nothing but dogs. Throw a quail over em and there’s not a one of them that wouldn’t point.”

So that’s why you troll them in every Mets thread? Just what Mets fans are looking for, advice from a Yankees fan. Pass him by, folks. Nothing to see here.

Tucker is the type of guy who performs when playing every day. Hopefully he winds up traded or claimed by someone who can give him that chance.

I’m sure one possible route the Braves saw at the beginning of this year was a Tucker, Inciarte, Acuna outfield. While that clearly never came close to happening due to the success of the team and Markakis, I’m sure part of the reasoning for acquiring him was giving him a shot to receive everyday at bats once this season unraveled a bit. As the Braves are a year ahead of schedule and don’t have that need to evaluate as much, now that won’t happen.

I 100% agree with you there.
I hope they can do him a service and find him somewhere that can give him at bats.

Bourjos and Tucker have no chance in Atlanta. They believe Culberson and Santana are better as the 4th and 5th OF when Acuna returns.

As well they should. Santana kept hitting while Bourjos and Tucker continue to be mediocre one-dimensional players. Both Culberson & Santana can (not should) play almost every position on the field, a positive if not bringing in a 3B and leaving the utility knife of Camargo at 3B.

Bourjos was killing it in AAA just like Santana. I can’t grade Bourjos and Tucker on basically 20 at bats a month. It’s impossible to grade anyone who gets that little play. Santana will do the same. He’ll get some run here, and he will show that he’s not ready or able to hit MLB pitching. BTW, Bourjos last 28 days in the majors, .941 OPS on 18 PA. Tucker much worse, 25 PA with .467 OPS. I would rather see 4 OF only, which doesn’t include Culberson because he’s awful in the OF. Keep him as a utility IF. I would just rather see guys at 1 position to back up. Keep the bench as Bourjos, Culberson, Suzuki and Flaherty. Send Santana back to AAA when Acuna returns. Now, if they can make a trade to make the team better, then by all means do it. However, internally, this is the best course they can take.

The Giants need to blow it up could you imagine the haul they would get from the Yankees for MadBum or the Braves for Posey ? I think the Indians would have some interest in Longoria and Brewers in Cueto

Posey to ATL? Nope nope nope. We need to a full time catcher, not a C/1B. Posey will be more valuable to a AL team that has the luxury of the DH or a NL team with a bad 1B, not one with a MVP bat (Freeman). He only catches 100 games/year and I would not be surprised to see SF slowly transition him to full time 1B by the end of his contract, especially if Joey Bart comes along quickly. If you’re paying a haul for a catcher, just get Realmuto.

Snitker is a poor manager of his bullpen, and if the Braves are not going to spend on the bullpen then they should go for a guy like Oh. Snitker continually misuses Moylan, Yost at least knew how to use Moylan.

Snitker has no idea, yesterday he coughed up 6 runs in the 9th. Another game lost that should have been a W.
