White Sox Outright Trayce Thompson

By Steve Adams | June 25, 2018 at 1:45pm CDT

Outfielder Trayce Thompson has cleared waivers and been sent outright to the White Sox’ Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte, James Fegan of The Athletic reports (on Twitter). Thompson was designated for assignment last week when the team activated Avisail Garcia from the disabled list.

Thompson, 27, entered Spring Training with the Dodgers but has since gone to the Yankees, Athletics and now back to his original organization, the White Sox, in a series of waiver claims and minor trades. This is the first time Thompson has cleared waivers and been outrighted, and as such, he doesn’t have the option to reject the assignment.

It’s been a brutal year at the plate for Thompson, who has slashed just .117/.162/.211 and fanned 50 times in 137 plate appearances. His struggles at the dish date back to last season, and he’s never really enjoyed a prolonged run of success in the big leagues. That said, the former second-round pick did hit .249/.322/.463 with 18 homers through his first 62 MLB games with the ChiSox and Dodgers. He’s also an excellent athlete who can capably handle all three outfield spots. He’ll head to Charlotte and look for a reset of sorts in hopes of getting back on track and returning to the Majors later this season.

No long waiver journey this time? Trayce was brutal in only 137 plate-appearances with White Sox though. Sample Size?

It’s crazy how much Trayce has regressed. He was the only piece I was bummed about giving up in the Frazier deal.

He would have had to be a stud for more than a rookie season

What is the difference between being “optioned” and “out-righted?” And what does it mean when a team “selects the contract” of a player?

Optioned- still on 40 man but sent to the minors to free up a 25 man spot
Outrighted- off the 40 man (after the 7 day DFA period) and assigned to the minors
Select contract- put on 40 man roster (and usually called up to the majors)

Thanks for that clarification of terms
Thompson’s regression has been strange to watch, given that he’s such a talented athlete and the promise he showed early on with the ChiSox. But then when you look at the MiLB and MLB stats as a whole, he hasn’t shown much success at any level.

Would like the braves to take a shot on him in the minors for depth

Well, he was outrighted to the minors, so it seems the Braves chose not to pick him up on waivers.

Always wondered why players who are constantly shuttled around like this from organization to organization are given more slack for slow starts. The guy has been on 4 teams alone this year all across the country. Can’t be easy to continously move, much less acclimate to different teams and keep up a solid level of production. Wouldn’t be surprised if he still hitting agaain now that he finally cleared waivers.

I dont understand how he hit so good his rookie season and has never hit above .260 in the minors.
