Trade Chatter: Jones, Kela, Beltre, A’s, Gibson, Phillies

By Steve Adams | July 27, 2018 at 10:31am CDT

The Orioles haven’t yet approached Adam Jones about the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause, reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. That doesn’t mean that the Orioles won’t be moving him, however, and Crasnick echoes previous reports in writing that both the Phillies and Indians have some degree of interest in Jones, who’d likely play right field for either club. Per Crasnick, there are some in the industry who feel Jones would want an extension in order to waive his full no-trade protection — Jones has 10-and-5 rights — though there’s been no firm indication of that from Jones’ camp, it seems.

Meanwhile, Jones himself chatted with MASNsports.com’s Steve Melewski about the possibility of being moved, calling reported interest from other teams “humbling” and “flattering.” The longtime Baltimore center fielder, though, says he has not yet discussed the possibility of approving a trade away from the Orioles with his family. “If the scenario is right, I want to win, I want play ball,” says Jones. “You look at these kind of scenarios and what is the best fit for you. When all the information comes and we get more information, I’ll be able to make a better decision based on the information.”

More trade chatter from around the league…

  • With Cole Hamels on his way to the Cubs, pending medical reviews, the next player the Rangers move could be closer Keone Kela, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). Per Passan, clubs that have spoken to Texas about Kela “get a sense they’re getting close to something.” The Pirates have been the team most prominently linked to Kela in recent days, though a hard-throwing, 25-year-old reliever who can be controlled affordably through the 2021 season clearly won’t have any shortage of interested parties. Kela might be the Rangers’ best trade chip, given that remaining club control, although that control also lessens the Rangers’ sense of urgency in finding a trade partner.
  • Sticking with the Rangers, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports that the Braves have emerged as somewhat of a longshot suitor for third baseman Adrian Beltre. Atlanta wouldn’t be looking to supplant Johan Camargo at third base, but Beltre would share some time at the hot corner with the much younger Camargo while deepening the Atlanta bench and providing some leadership on a youthful club. Beltre has the ability to veto any trade, of course, and reports have painted the possibility of a trade surrounding him to be remote. Sullivan also notes that, with regard to the Pirates and their interest in Kela, the Rangers could have some interest in starting pitching prospects Clay Holmes and Taylor Hearn.
  • The Athletics remain on the hunt for a rotation upgrade, but Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets that the A’s “haven’t sounded particularly enthusiastic” about that market. If the A’s can’t find a starter at a price point they deem acceptable, they could instead look to add to their bullpen as a means of shortening games and taking some pressure off the current members of their rotation.
  • The Twins “have fielded inquiries” on right-hander Kyle Gibson, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, but they’re more interested in dealing their impending free agents than Gibson, who is controlled through 2019 and is in the midst of a breakout season. The former first-round pick was brilliant against the Red Sox last night, allowing one run over eight innings and lowering his ERA to 3.42 in the process. Through 129 innings, Gibson has averaged 8.8 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 and 0.91 HR/9. His fastball is up nearly a mile per hour over its 2017 average, and his 12.2 percent swinging-strike rate is easily a career-high. The Twins are currently seven games back of the division lead in the AL Central, but they’ve won four in a row. With three games in Boston and another hosting Cleveland before Tuesday’s non-waiver deadline, Minnesota faces a tough road to closing that gap.
  • Sherman also reports that the Phillies, after missing out on Manny Machado, would at the very least like to add a defensive upgrade at shortstop. Interestingly, he notes that the Phils have at least had internal discussions about reacquiring Freddy Galvis from the Padres. He also lists the Rays’ Adeiny Hechavarria and the Tigers’ Jose Iglesias as players that the Phillies’ front office has considered. The Phils have also been tied to Eduardo Escobar since Machado went to L.A.

Phillies should pick up Grandy/Jones/Baustisa, Iglesias, and Fransico Liriano…

Iggy is an upgrade at SS while Kingery can go back to AAA and figure out his swing again.

Liriano has destroyed LHH all season and can go to the bullpen and join Davis as the LH options.

If I need to explain the bench bats, go check out the Phillies bench numbers lol.

I wouldn’t be opposed to reacquiring Galvis. I trust Kapler would use him more effectively than Pete did. He’s a decent number 8 hitter. Would be an upgrade over Valentine as a UTL player.

What other holes do you need to fill? C, 4th OF, and another starter/bullpen piece?

I would expect Ross and Yates to obviously be available. Hedges, Jankowski and Renfroe as well. We match up nicely for a trade.

I would offer Yates, Galvis, and Ross for Alec Bohm.

As a 2018 draftee, Bohm can’t be traded until after the World Series, and before you ask: no, not even as a PTBNL.

Besides, that’s not a good enough package from the Pads to get him. Yates is probably worth a backend T100 guy, but neither Ross nor Galvis tip the scale quite that much to make Bohm a realistic target.

He didn’t look very good last night pitching against them. Lots of pitches that could have been knocked out for home runs. Colon days has passed and the last thing the A’s need is another #5 starter. Might as well bring up a AAA starter than Colon.

He was said to be a great mentor to the young A’s pitching staff in 2012/13. I think that, if nothing else, he can help the A’s in that regard and throw 4-5 innings every five days, at least keeping them in games.

Some times you must move on. He had a good start to the season but since that time only 1 game he pitched well enough to win. A’s need a top of rotation starter if they want to get pass the WC spot. Right now its Manaea and a bunch of #5 starters. They should go for 2 more relievers if they can’t get a top of rotation starter.

Adam Jones return would be next to nothing at this point. Why trade him? Unless he WANTS to be traded. The most the O’s would get for Jones would be a low level marginal prospect IMO.

That’s okay. They’d get a return. If they scout well they can develop the player—something they’ve done very well with over the years. That’s right—the O’s have a very strong track record of developing players. Also, the $ they save on his salary can be placed elsewhere.

I stand firmly by what I said, though Cubbie Steve is correct in saying that they’ve left something to be desired with some of their pitching, especially starters, though Bundy and Gaus are coming along. That said they’ve done well with several pitchers too (Givens, Brach, Britton and Bleier, among others).

Sure, they might only get a marginal prospect who maybe only becomes a bench/role player or lower leverage BP arm.

That’s still more than they’d have if holding onto Jones tho. And that’s how you go about the process of rebuilding a club.

Yeah….. I get it. Lightening can strike. You can get lucky (Hader for the Brewers is an example). The chances are minimal. But like I said… if he wants to be traded, then by all means trade him.

Don’t need to catch lightening to make it worth it. Even if you only get an upside of say Caleb Joseph or Tyler Wilson in return, that is still dramatically more usable value than they could ever get out of Jones if keeping him.

So even if he wants to stay, there is no logical reason to keep him – he’ll cost them multiple millions, he’ll be leaving without compensation at the end of the year, and even if he puts up positive value the rest of the way this season it will be meaningless on a club that can’t take advantage of it. Anything in return is more valuable for Baltimore

The logic is pretty sound here datkstar, And yet Jones represents something more and larger in the city of Baltimore. Doing right by him and his family – who have certainly done right by the city of Baltimore in what has been a terrific relationship – is also a significant consideration.

Doing right by him? You mean like sending him to a location where he gets to play meaningful baseball, likely into October, and possibly impress the new club to the point they make a generous extension offer? That as opposed to wasting away on a club on pace for 100 loses that has no intention of making him part of the future?

He has trade rights and can reject a trade if he really hates the situation that much. But let’s be honest, for a few months out of his life, by default going nearly anywhere would be much better for him than staying in Baltimore.

He shows a very positive presence with the new club and/or gets the opportunity to become a postseason hero, and all of a sudden his stock shoots well above where it will naturally be after the season ends as well

None of those shortstops are an upgrade over Kingery honestly. Defensively he’s been OK. Getting better recently. Still not the long term answer there but for now it’s fine. None of those options represent a SIGNIFICANT upgrade offensively (aside from Escobar but he can’t play short). So I don’t see why you hinder Kingery developement by trading for someone.

If the phils want to upgrade anywhere, they need a lefty in the pen. And there’s not a single player on their bench not named Andrew Knapp that belongs in the big leagues. Let Williams, Kingery and Franco keep playing. Focus on making the team deeper.

I think they need one reliable bench piece, be it outfield or infield.. I agree with you on Kingery; his defense is getting better at SS. Only would be happy with an everyday guy like Iglesias of the Tigers over Kingery, who would then be able to play at least 4 times per week as a super utility guy and work on his hitting. They are not going to send him down. I would like to see a lefty starter but it seems that horse has left the barn. Interestingly, in the month of July, the BP has the best bullpen ERA in the NL. It is getting better. Kapler has taken hits on how he has used them but they are starting to settle in, I think. Also, a real closer would be nice because it is going to take a bit more before Seranthony can take over that role full time.

Wheeler is a big gamble by any team picking him up. Mets will want a quality prospect for him while teams will be hesitant to trade a good prospect for someone who just had TJS. If he pitches well enough the rest of the year his trade value will go up and the Mets will get a good prospect for him.
