The Phillies have joined a growing list of clubs with interest in Orioles lefty Zach Britton, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. It does not appear, however, that there’s any particular momentum toward a deal.
Quite a few organizations surely see Britton as a potential deadline target. We’ve heard recently that the Red Sox and Yankees are among them. There has also been quite a lot of chatter surrounding the possibility that he’ll be included in a deal involving Orioles star Manny Machado, another player that the Phillies have interest in.
There’s no reasonable way to handicap the chase for Britton at this point. After all, most contenders need relief pitching and the southpaw has a history of high-leverage excellence. He’s a rental player earning a hefty $12MM salary, which certainly limits his value but hardly means a trade can’t be sorted out.
The real question in the pursuit of Britton is how teams will truly evaluate his present ability level. He dealt with injuries for much of last year and only recently returned from offseason surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, meaning the recent track record is relatively thin.
Through 13 appearances this season for Britton, there have been some worrying indications. He’s handing out about five free passes per nine innings while recording a pedestrian 7.8 K/9 and has allowed six earned runs through 12 2/3 frames. The O’s have only asked Britton to work back to back days on two occasions, and only once went to him for more than three outs, so they are handling him with some care.
On the other hand, he’s surely still getting his feet back under him. All of the earned runs have come in just two appearances, with three of his seven walks attributed to his first time taking the hill this year. Britton’s sinker is still drawing grounders, though he’s “only” getting them at a 60.6% rate — a figure that’s well above league average but isn’t quite to par for a hurler who generated worm burners on more than three of every four balls in play for the preceding four seasons. His swinging-strike rate is up to 12.9%. Most intriguingly, Britton’s velocity has trended upward over his month of MLB action this year.
Notably, the market is not exactly loaded with alternatives. There are some high-end lefty relievers with future control rights that might be had, but only at huge prices. The best alternative rental pieces are pitchers like Zach Duke of the Twins, Jake Diekman of the Rangers, and Jerry Blevins of the Mets, none of whom has an established ceiling nearly so lofty as Britton’s.
bucketbrew35
He’s probably still a little gun shy pushing off his leg. And honestly, who wouldn’t be? I’d certainly rather have him as a lefty weapon than Adam Morgan. It’s so disappointing how much Morgan has regressed this year after a solid season last year.
MahatmaGagne
I can’t wait for the Mets to make DeGrom, Syndegaard, Matz & Wheeler available to see the bidding war amoungst the best farm systems….Phillies, Braves, Yankees, Dodgers, Astros & Indians.
Get your popcorn ready, in reality the Mets could have an incredible turnaround from just prospects alone. Might rival the great “King Kahn” in Chitown
thegreatcerealfamine
You’re the same guy in another thread who called the Yankees prospects trash. Talk about a sudden flip flop.
MahatmaGagne
I’ve never dogged the Yankees prospects? Get off deez ****
Bocephus
No you just called the Yankees and Cubs “scumbags” that’s even more infantile.
juicemane
he “plays for the other team” so that might prove a challenge.
MetsYankeesRedSox
They would do well cleaning house. It’s a known fact we all feel great after throwing up.
dimitrios in la
He’s not at all gun shy about pushing off. He’s hitting 96 and getting more swings and misses than before. Still, however, working on keeping the sinker down; mostly he looks pretty locked in but loses focus and elevates a fastball occasionally.
bucketbrew35
dimitrios in la, I promise you it’s still lurking in the back of his mind. The same thing plagued Ryan Howard for a while after his Achilles rupture. I think it’s only natural. Eventually the concern will become less and less and he should be able to lock in fully.
dimitrios in la
Bucketbrew, thanks for sharing.
J leathal86
Adam Morgan looks just like cliff lee in his delivery I really like that but just isn’t the same pitcher lol
dwilson10
Britton to the Astros for Yordan Alvarez and Gilberto Celestino
lowtalker1
lol won’t happen
That’s a huge over pay for 2 months of an Giles 2.0
bucketbrew35
lowtalker1, as someone who watched Giles come up and has seen plenty of Orioles games, the two are nothing alike. Britton is a ground ball pitcher with a big arm working on getting himself back to normal after a serious injury.
Giles is a fly ball pitcher with a high octane arm. He is also a short tempered head case that has shown up all three of the managers he’s ever had (Sandberg, Mackanin, and Hinch) while having profanity laced hissy fits on the mound.
#Fantasygeekland
Did you mean Machado? That seems fair if you meant those two for him, but I have no idea what the Astros do about their IF situation
Polish Hammer
Britton to anybody for a salary dump relief and not much else in return but a mid range prospect at best.
southi
While I’ve been vocal about my concerns about Britton’s health and effectiveness, the truth is that most of the damage against him was inflicted by the Braves. In his first outing against Atlanta in only 1/3 of an inning Britton gave up 5 hits 4 earned runs and hit a batter. If you take that one outing away he looks much more effective.
B-Strong
If you take that outing away he’s been really effective as he’s only given up 2 runs on a blown save to Seattle. Other than those two instances, he’s put up goose eggs each time. He’s not the guy that shut down the league 2 years ago, but he’s still a great addition to any club that’s looking for a solid lefty bridge or closer.
MeowMeow
Given that he’s only had 13 appearances so far this season, excluding his two bad ones is removing 15% of his games. He’s been better in July so far, but I think there’s plenty of room for concern.
GareBear
I’d be willing to chalk up the first appearance back as an aberration, Seattle got to him plain and simple. But even with the blown save he has rebounded nicely if you believe the first appearance was him”getting back up to speed”
lowtalker1
Hand is the better option but Britton will cost less
So, once Britton goes the other playoffs teams will over pay for hand
Interesting plan cotton, let’s see if it’ll pay off
Judge Judy
Hand is not in the same conversation as Britton. Healthy Britton is top 5 relievers in baseball.
jdgoat
So is Hand. Hand has way, way more value than Britton right now.
bleacherbum
Lol so good that his manager decided to not play him in a one game playoff when every manager goes to their best guys.
Must have been Showalters fault right? Or must have been the honest answer which was he trusted other guys in situations that night instead of him. Okay cool fire Buck right? Fast forward two years and he is still there, so when will the question ever be answered?
Don’t hate on Hand until you see him pitch. I doubt if the Padres were in a one game playoff – winner moves on situation that they don’t use Hand, Especially when the game called for his situational services.
bmoregmr
Britton had an amazing year that year that you speak of. Buck didnt bring him in because he was saving him for a save situation. Buck made a bonehead decision that had everybody shaking there head. To imply that buck trusted Jimenez over britton is just plain dumb.
bleacherbum
I’m not implying he trusted Ubaldo Jimenez over Britton, what I’m saying is that if Britton is elite he is in that game tied in extras no matter what.
swinging wood
Or if his manager is saving him for a save situation that never comes.
jleve618
He would have been had they managed to get a lead. The decision to not put him in only looked bad because they lost. What if they use him there, two innings later take the lead, then blow the save in the bottom of the inning with anyone other than britton. He woulda been killed for that as well. Maybe not as much as simply not using him at all, but people would still be mad.
jbigz12
That’s the stupidest thing I have ever heard. “If Britton was elite he would’ve been in a tied game in extras” He had a .69 ERA and didn’t blow a save. What the hell is elite to you? If it were up to Britton he would’ve been in that game. That could be the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard made as to whether someone is elite. He doesn’t manage the team and can’t put himself in a game.
jbigz12
Buck certainly wouldn’t have been killed for that decision had he put Britton in instead of Jimenez first. He had used EVERY reliever in his bullpen prior to that. Any bottom of an inning in extra innings might as well be a save because if you blow it you’re going home.
MeowMeow
I’m concerned about Britton’s WHIP and K/BB ratio, as a fan of a reported suitor. Last year and this year don’t make me super optimistic. It seems like relievers fade fast once they start to go 😡
gorav114
Anybody that watches him pitch can see he is getting back to form with every outing. He’s gonna be a great get for some playoff contender. When his sinker is on, and it looks close, he is dominant.
lowtalker1
Ill take Yates over Britton
Ed Charles
Klentak better get off of his butt and do something to add to the team. But when I see who his big signings were this off season, not sure I want him trading for anything.
The bad from Klentak…Overpaid for a mediocre hitting 1st baseman, Santana, When you didnt need a 1st baseman… Signed Tommy Hunter, who’s getting lit up like a X-mas tree Brought back Pat Neshek, Who couldn’t pitch til recently and has a 2nd baseman playing SS almost every day, making errors while hitting under .220…
The Meh…..Arrieta. He’s been up and down so he falls in the middle.
The Good…Ummm, still waiting
T_Rexx2
The Santana signing was a good one. It lengthened the lineup and he’s not a mediocre first baseman. He’s good defensively and can do a lot of things well with the bat. He’s also a great influence to some of the other younger guys.
Arrieta has been up and down but he’s been a great winning influence on this team and has helped the rest of the pitching staff do well.
I think without either of these guys in the clubhouse we are significantly worse.
How could he have known that Hunter wasn’t gonna pitch as well as he has been? He’s been great the previous few years and Neshek was incredible last year, and had no signs of being hurt when they signed him. Klentek is the reason the Phillies are where they are.
T_Rexx2
And Kingery was the man in the minors and is still young. He probably wasn’t ready for the big leagues yet but he’s shown flashes of what he can be and could eventually grow into the guy they thought he would be.
Beyond_Max_Power
Santana committed an error 4 games in a row. I’ve watched almost every Phillies game, and Santana is not a great defensive player. They shouldn’t have signed him with Hoskins ready to take over (Hoskins is a terrible LF).
His OBP is great, but he cannot hit for average. The money he is getting paid, he should hit 40 HRs a year and hit at least .250. if they would have waited, they could have signed him for less. Massive overpay for an unnecessary player addition.
Polish Hammer
If helps price tag dropped he would’ve re-upped and stayed in Cleveland.
kabphillie
Disagree on Santana. His averages have never been that great, but he walks a ton and has some power. I would still make that deal.
Neshek is fine now that he’s healthy. Tommy has been underwhelming to be sure. I still like the Arrieta so signing for what he brings as a veteran. His pitching has been what I would expect for a pitcher fading past prime. Neither Jake or Carlos is on a bad contract, nor are Tommy and Pat, so there’s not long term worries.
The struggles of Odubel, Scott and Aaron Altherr are more concerning to me, since at least the first two are meant to be building blocks. And then there is JP. Back luck on that HBP but he wasn’t great before.
T_Rexx2
Odubel is just a streaky player. He’s always going to be that guy that puts up an MVP type month or so and then not be able to hit a beach ball.
Pax vobiscum
Santana’s BAIP is .210 and his line drive and hard hit ball rates have seriously declined. Not really a good sign.
Caseys.Partner
“Klentak better get off of his butt and do something to add to the team.”
Scariest thought I’ve ever read about the Phillies.
Be careful what you wish for. The next ten year rebuild is closer than you think.
Caseys.Partner
Zach Britton is a dead man walking and drawing ten million dollars in salary. Zach Britton’s career has been over with for more than a year.
Trading for Ken Giles is a way better idea than trading anything for Zach Britton.
mstrchef13
I think you made a similarly idiotic comment in another post about Orioles trade rumors. Is it just the O’s that make you spout this nonsense or do you do it all the time?
bucketbrew35
Yes because Giles really “locks things down” in big games doesn’t he Casey? Did you even watch this man meltdown in last year’s playoffs?
MooseBreathMints
The more Britton has pitched the more he looks like himself. Forget about the other names mentioned as possible LHP. They are NOT worth trading for!
larry48
will Rockies fire Black before season is over or after.?
basemonkey 2
Britton basically didn’t have a spring training. So his last month has been essentially building up arm strength and innings. The writer of this article fails to point out that his K totals have never been that extreme anyways. He’s always been an high leverage ground baller, and not about missing bats. So that’s still in line with his performance. He’s too young to be in decline and the injury had nothing to do with his arm. It was a fluke offseason injury w the Achilles.
Caseys.Partner
Zach Britton equals Mark Appel.
Caseys.Partner
I remember when Klentak had a good Giles trade.
Then he thought: “Wait, no one knows who Vince Velasquez is. Everyone is going to be like ‘We traded Ken Giles for who?’. Well that won’t do. I need a name in this deal.”
Yeah the Astros figured him out real good. “How about Mark Appel? He was the 1/1 pick in the draft.”
For that the Astros subtracted the outfield prospect and took Jonathan Arauz from the Phillies GCL team just after Ben Badler got done raving about Arauz.
No one has offered any big prospect names for two months of Machado, but Klentak is going to restock the Orioles with the Phillies farm.
“Hey we got Zach Britton too!”
Every other year Klentak/MacPhail are going to buy the Brooklyn Bridge for Phillies fans.
bucketbrew35
Currently the Phillies are winning that trade. Arauz and Eshelman (who has been surprisingly bad this year) may be the ones to decide things in the end.
mickster66
One thing you need to remember about Britton is: 4 of those runs were in one dreadful appearance in which he lasted only 1/3 of an inning… in the other appearances, he’s only allowed 2 runs in 12 1/3 innings.
Z-A 2
So how many washed up closers or junk RPs do we need?
DannyQ3913
Phils need to get Hamels and Diekman from Rangers
