The Phillies have signed infielder Ryan Goins to a minor-league pact, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic (via Twitter). He’ll head to the team’s Triple-A affiliate.
Goins joined the Royals over the winter after wrapping up a five-year run with the Blue Jays. He ended up seeing 41 games of action before being designated for assignment, turning in a .226/.252/.313 slash in 120 turns with the bat.
While the thirty-year-old has long earned plaudits for his glovework, that offensive output is all too familiar. Goins is a .228/.274/.333 hitter through over fifteen-hundred MLB plate appearances.
Nothing wrong with insurance
He’s unreal with the glove and I still think he has a little bit more to show with the bat
He definitely has no more in the bat. That’s just his bat. Its bad. Its really bad
I’m gonna sit here and wait patiently for some clown to come along and try to say that 1500 PAs is a small sample. I know you’re out there.
lol. Solaris made my night. Always good to laugh before bed.
Haha I have been awaiting the same thing. The casual and female fan base was ENRAGED when he was released here I’m Toronto (“But he tries really hard! He’s a team player! He’s SOOOO cute!), but the rest of us were relieved.
Good glove to have on the bench.
something like what Andres Blanco did for them for a few years
Gotta like Ryan Goins. Great glove, multiple positions, home run pop in his bat, great guy in the clubhouse. Better version of John MacDonald.
I don’t know about the home run pop part, but guys like him are still nice to have on a bench. Brendan Ryan is another good example.
No home run pop. One of the worst players on baseball over the last five years, based on traditional and advanced metrucs. Given many chances to improve. If you’re the worst player on the KC Royals, and released by them, you don’t belong in MLB.
Hope he finds himself in a good place there come autumn. He never lit it up at the plate, save for an odd hot RSIP stretch last year, but he’s a great defender at multiple positions who always puts in an honest effort.
Wow Jeff. Nice little dig on Goins bat there in the article.
Just want to say to you that ur articles here are a joy to read. The nice flair you sometimes put in.. Like that little dig, add a little humor to many and keep one’s attention focused on journeyman players might skip thru the article on.
No offense to the other writers here, but urs and Tim’s have always had that touch.
This is odd. The Royals official transactions list him as being outrighted to AAA.
