East Notes: G. Sanchez, Pedroia, Mets, Alonso, Braves

By Connor Byrne | August 25, 2018 at 6:06pm CDT

Catcher Gary Sanchez may be in line to rejoin the Yankees on Sept. 3, when they start what could be a crucial series in Oakland, per George A. King III of the New York Post. Sanchez, out since July 24 with a groin injury, began a rehab assignment at the rookie level Saturday and will eventually progress to Triple-A before returning to the majors. This has been a surprisingly rough year for Sanchez, a star from 2016-17 who has endured two DL stints and slashed a disappointing .188/.283/.416 in 279 plate appearances. Nevertheless, Sanchez’s return will be a welcome one for New York, which has seen backup catcher Austin Romine plummet to earth offensively after a terrific first half of the season.

Here’s more from the East Coast:

  • Left knee problems have limited Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia to 13 PAs this season and shelved him since May 31, though there is optimism he’ll return in 2018, according to manager Alex Cora (via Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald). “We don’t have anything set as far as timetables, but we’re feeling good with the progress,” Cora said of Pedroia, adding that the 35-year-old will “contribute here in the dugout” even if he’s unable to play again this season. The Pedroia-less Red Sox haven’t gotten much production from any of their second base options this year, evidenced in part by their minus-0.2 fWAR at the position, though the team has still managed easily the majors’ best record (90-40).
  • The Mets may promote one of their top prospects, first baseman Peter Alonso, when rosters expand next month, manager Mickey Callaway told Brian Heyman of MLB.com and other reporters on Saturday. The 23-year-old Alonso, whom Baseball America, MLB.com and FanGraphs regard as a top-75 prospect, has slashed .243/.345/.545 with 17 home runs in the hitter-friendly environs of Triple-A Las Vegas this season. In the process, Alonso has overtaken the struggling Dominic Smith as the Mets’ best first base prospect. Smith earned his first promotion last August, when multiple outlets viewed him as a top-50 prospect, but his stock has plunged since then. The Mets, despite being well out of contention, demoted him to Las Vegas on Friday in order to give veteran outfielder Jay Bruce an extended look at first.
  • The NL East-leading Braves expect to get closer Arodys Vizcaino and fellow relievers Shane Carle, Brandon McCarthy and Peter Moylan back by mid-September, perhaps “much sooner” in some cases, Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes. The two most effective members of that group this season have been Vizcaino and Carle, though both have battled shoulder issues. McCarthy has been on the shelf since June 24 because of knee troubles, meanwhile, and he’ll be pitching the final innings of his career when he does come back. The 34-year-old announced earlier this month that he’s going to retire at season’s end.

Keep moylan and McCarthy out. Release them or something no matter what cost. I don’t have stats to back this up, but I definitely feel like we have been a better staff in general without them and I like our minor league options

They don’t have stats to back up keeping Sam freeman employed yet the trot him out there to walk the leadoff man a lot. Don’t worry about your lack of stats lol

As a contender, you need guys to save innings in blowouts. Those two are much better than the alternatives.

You call yourself a “Bravesfan” yet you say “keep Moylan out”. Tell me how many times Moylan has pitched with runners on and then tell me he has pitched poorly given the context of the situation he has pitched in.

Snitker as far as I am concerned does not use his bullpen well. Moylan is a good pitcher, and all this year Snitker the majority of the time has asked Moylan to pitch with 1 or more runners on.

Moylan has a negative WAR, 4.45 era, with a 1.75 something whip. The whip alone shows he’s not pitching well anymore. Idc if he is a minor legend amongst the past braves teams… currently he isn’t pitching well at all. We have better options. And as one guy mentioned about Sam Freeman always being rolled out there to suck, I’m afraid the same thing will happen with moylan. Just cause he’s on the roster he will be used when we shouldn’t use him. Don’t question my fandom with ur lack of stats and bs reasoning as to why we should continue using a player no matter how awful he is

First off, over his last 7 games, Moylan has gone 2.08 through 4.1 up with a 1.15 WHIP. That’s worth keeping, if we can find any indication that the production isn’t a fluke. Let’s look further.

If you go look at game logs, he had a 3.24 ERA in April and a 3.00 ERA in May. July was a clunker, but once again in August, he pitched to a 0.00 era in 2.1 IP after a DL stint that started after his July 1st appearance. Actually, due to the nature of his specialization, his stats will be inflated by shorter appearances. He’s only given up runs in 9 of his 39 appearances on the year. Thats not great, but considering his age and the fact that June was a lot of pitching through injury, the math for this starts to line up.

So there’s pretty clearly reason to keep him, seeing as how he

          a.) Is a fan favorite
b.) Won’t Be activated until September roster expansion
c.) Is paid exactly the same either way
d.) Might actually wind up being productive if he can be used as a one-out righty specialist.

Maybe in the future, look at the stats before posting. You did kind of lead with “I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but here’s my opinion”.

What a joke and a bunch of irrelevant cherry picked stats lol. U don’t keep a guy cause he had 2 good innings lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or because he looked ok over 7 games hahaha. Maybe have some common sense before you comment with a lot bull. You can’t cherry pick stats and act like you made an intelligent. Fact is, his #’s suck and we have better options lol. But go ahead find a stat that shows where he threw 3 strikes to a batter and build your argument on why he’s so good off of that irrelevant crap lol

And I know that you Mets… don’t want to break the confidence of the Sox management team (as you’ve now worked your way into the inner circle) however I will share some secret details.

“When Cora said of Pedroia, adding that the 35-year-old will “contribute here in the dugout” even if he’s unable to play again this season” he has spent the past few weeks out in Cupertino, CA. No he has not been working on rehabbing his knee. Peddy has been working on a new app for Apple’s upcoming release of Apple Watch 3rd generation. In early September he will be testing it live in the dugout to help the Red Sox steal signs between the pitcher and catcher.

When confronted with the news leak Cora replied, “I don’t know what happened last year, I told Trader Dave that it was my idea to do this so that everyone can contribute to the team”.

Wonderful. The guy hit .243 playing half his games in a hitters park and playing in the thin air (where breaking balls don’t break) / high altitude (where batted balls carry) PCL. And this is their top prospect @ 1B?

They need a new GM as well as everything regarding scouting and developing players overhauled.

Callaway & Eiland have done great work with the pitching staff – particularly making Wheeler a quality starter, and Gesellman a legit closer. Now get them some position players that do not pull everything into opposition shifts, can play defense, run the bases., and make plays that turn games.

Batting average doesn’t really matter in some cases, when it comes with an .890 OPS, you take that player and play him everyday.

Alonso really struggled when promoted from AA (under .200) , but he has hit well since and raised his average overall. There’s a reason why there are many levels in MiLB – its called player development.

Yeah because 30 plus homers and 100 plus rbis and virtually identical numbers power wise at both levels combined between AA/AAA lol but mets need better drafting. Do yourself a favor and actually root for a team and know the prospects before you open your mouth. This way you won’t sound like an uneducated idiot.

    Kids,
There is not a MLB player who will retire IF there is ANY chance of returning. Prince Fielder HAD NO CHOICE. You think the players union would allow it? Not a chance.
