Injury Updates: Sale, Erasmo, Donaldson

By Mark Polishuk | August 12, 2018 at 9:59am CDT

The latest on some DL situations around baseball…

  • The Red Sox have activated left-hander Chris Sale from the 10-day disabled list, and he’ll take the hill today for a start against the Orioles.  Righty Brandon Workman has been sent down to Triple-A to create a roster spot for Sale (Boston also sent down right-hander William Cuevas, who was the 26th man on the roster for yesterday’s double-header.)  Sale’s DL placement was retroactive to July 28, and while he missed a bit more than the minimum 10 days, that was more due to some scheduling preferences than any further issue with the inflammation in his throwing shoulder.  The ace southpaw is enjoying another outstanding season, with a league-best 2.04 ERA and 13.2 K/9 over 141 IP.
  • The Mariners have activated right-hander Erasmo Ramirez from the disabled list, with right-hander Nick Rumbelow going to Triple-A in the corresponding move.  Ramirez will start for Seattle today against Houston and will be pitching in just his third game of an injury-plagued 2018 season.  He opened the season on the DL due to a lat strain, and then has been sidelined since April 27 due to a teres major strain.
  • Josh Donaldson took a positive step in his rehab, with the Blue Jays telling reporters (including MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm) that the star third baseman “will begin baserunning and preparation for game play” if his injured calf responds well to “ramping up intensity” in training over the next few days.  Donaldson has played in only 36 games this season, though if he able to return and prove he’s healthy before August 31, the Jays might still be able to work out a trade to a contender.

If he can continue to outpitch Verlander & Bauer he will. If he doesn’t then he didn’t deserve it anyway

AL East aces always have it harder. Tougher ballparks and, prior to this year, a very competitive division with some deep hitting (Balt, Tor).

“AL East aces always have it harder.”

Oh please. Toronto, Tampa Bay, and Baltimore all have below-average offenses this year. Please stop glorifying the AL East.

Cashford – that is why I said “prior to this year”.

Still can’t argue Toronto, Baltimore, Boston and New York ballparks are tough on pitchers.

8 World Series Championships from the AL East since 1996. 10 Since 1992. An additional 3 appearances. No division has more.

Proof is there. Be mad all you want. Truth is not meant to glorify.

Is the season already over? Usually a whole season has to occur before giving out awards.

Today Sale lowered his ERA to 1.97. only took 68 pitches to get 12Ks — a record for 12Ks by 10 pitches.

Can hit 100mph with a wipeout slider.. Sale might be the best SP to hit FA, along with at the top of their respective game since Randy Johnson after the 2019 season.

How much could the then 29YO make? Is there really a limit if Boston doesn’t pull out all stops after this season and try to get an extension done?

I was there today. I’ve watched him twice before including 8 shutout earlier this year, and they couldn’t touch him, only hot was a slider outside corner blooped in. Not efficient imo today as I thought he is when lights out, but he’s back and well rested.

Hope Donaldson gets healthy and Cleveland trades for him.
Toronto probably isn’t going to offer a QO, so they might not need a huge return.

If Toronto can get a team to pick up 1M of his remaining money then that would be the best return possible. No way they get any kind of prospect for him.

Why would Toronto not get a prospect? He was the 2015 MVP and he has been an MVP candidate in 2016 and 2017.

That’s not true at all. They’ll QO him and either take the comp pick or have him back next year

They’ll QO him…. they did for Bautista and they’ll need any playerthat could potentially be a draw for them. Vlad and JD can co exist

If the Yanks want him, hopefully we can get Sheffield and Frazier out of them or at least one and another prospect. No reason for the jays to sell low. Donaldson is a MVP. Ignore this seasons current stats

I have to agree, Jays are definitely going to QO Donaldson. He’ll be in Tor next year for the purposes of trade bait.

It’s certainly possible that the Jays have a cubbies mentality/plan. That is and was to load up on as many position players as possible and then fill in the pitching with elite FA signings. Theo thought of that one.

Does Atkins have the same plan?
