Braves Sign Brian McCann

By Steve Adams | November 26, 2018 at 2:07pm CDT

2:07pm: The Braves announced that they’ve signed McCann to a one-year deal worth $2MM. As agent B.B. Abbott explained to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter links), McCann’s priority this winter was to return to Atlanta.

1:08pm: It’s a one-year deal for McCann, tweets MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.

12:56pm: The Braves have agreed to terms on a contract with free-agent catcher Brian McCann, reports Mark Bowman of MLB.com (via Twitter). It’ll be a homecoming for the Jet Sports client, who is from the Atlanta area and spent the first nine seasons of his Major League career as the Braves’ primary catcher.

McCann, 35 in February, signed a five-year, $80MM contract with the Yankees prior to the 2014 season and spent three years in the Bronx before being traded to the Astros in the 2016-17 offseason. After a solid first season in Houston that saw McCann hit .241/.323/.436 with 18 home runs and win a World Series ring, the 2018 season proved difficult for the veteran receiver. McCann slashed just .212/.301/.339 through 216 plate appearances. Injury troubles plagued McCann throughout the year — most notably a knee issue that required surgical repair over the summer.

In his return tour with Atlanta, McCann figures to share time behind the dish with 33-year-old Tyler Flowers. The pair could form a fairly straightforward platoon, as McCann has remained rather productive against right-handed pitching even into his mid-30s (with the exception of this past season’s injury-marred results). Flowers, meanwhile, has been a nuisance for left-handed pitchers, hitting them at a .278/.387/.444 clip over the past five seasons. The exact division of labor behind the plate may not even be fully determined until Spring Training, however.

Despite his knee troubles, McCann still managed to halt 32 percent of stolen-base attempts against him in 2018. He’s long been considered a plus pitch framer, though he graded out below average in that regard last season, per Baseball Prospectus. His blocking numbers, too, have declined in recent seasons. For the Braves, though, the hope will be that better health and perhaps a lighter workload can help McCann restore some of his offensive and defensive prowess. At the very least, he’ll bring nearly a decade and a half of experience working with pitchers to a young Atlanta rotation — an asset in which Braves decision-makers assuredly see plenty of value.

Think a lot of people predicted this would happen… think this takes us completely out of going after JT? I know it’s wasn’t a good shot to begin with, but got to think this ends it

I’d say it takes ATL out of the JT chase. Platoon setup w Flowers seems like a decent play here. Good move and they still have a truckload of prospects to help add in other areas.

I think the Marlins are just asking too much for JT hence the free agent signing of McCann. Plus we got our right handed power bat in Donaldson to protect Freddie. I like the moves. Now on to signing some pitchers!

That’s what I’m getting out of this as well. Within the division and with a team with a farm system as impressive as the Braves, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Marlins ask for a little bit more from the Braves then other organizations to begin with.

I think holding onto their assets for other positions and pitchers was the right move here.

At the time McCann was one of the best C’s in baseball. The contract really wasn’t a huge overpay for those 3 years. He averaged .235/.313/.418 23/75 good for a 99 OPS+ and over 5 WAR total. The 2 prospects that NY got back are also top 100 prospects now and HOU got a WS title. Overall i’d say it worked out good for McCann, NY, and HOU.

Another typical MLBTR comment. Attacks user, not address my genuine baseball comment.

He was injured last year, and wasn’t going to play regardless, prob due to vesting option. (No buyout)

Furthermore, he provides power from Catcher, a rarity these days, leadership for young ATL squad

I haven’t heard anyone call McCann “washed up” or a “has been”. It’s pretty much a known fact that McCann is a valuable asset to any team. I don’t know where you get underrated from. Everyone agrees that he still smashed righties, calls a great game and plays adequate or better defense, while being a leader in the club house.

I love McCann for what he brought to our organization but this is a joke of a signing

Bringing in an aging veteran catcher when you have a lot of money to spend and Grandal avalaibke who is arguably a perfect fit for your current needs

I get passing in Grandal for Realmuto if a deal could be swung but passing for McCann makes zero sense

We may as well have just resigned Suzuki

This is a lateral if not backward move

And I say all of this with great respect for McCann (I truly mean that but he is on the wrong side of his career now)

Ok and you get stuck with Grandal cause you signed him long term & Contreras comes up and is an all star but you don’t got him anymore.
The front office knows who are keepers and who are overhyped sometimes you have to fall back til somebody is ready McCann will be a fine timeshare with Flowers could Suzuki been better yes but he priced himself out of ATL. Plus McCann’s leadership is undeniable I believe he will be a godsend for the young pitchers and he is professional which the youngsters can learn from him & the way he handles himself.

Can see them do the same thing with Markakis until Pache is ready. They have the depth pieces in Culbertson & Camargo to have a couple older guys that won’t play everyday. Would like a LH pinch hitter for the bench have not had one since Eric Hinske.

I imagine every one of my fellow Braves fans wanted to see JTR in a Braves uniform, but we should all see this as good news. This could be the Braves telling Miami there offer is solid so we are prepared to move on.

Or this could be the Braves ACTUALLY moving on and the offer is no longer on the table to Miami, though I can think of worse bench bats than Flowers and McCann, and having an extra couple of catchers is a good thing.

Grandal would cost the Braves a second round draft and with the penalties hitting them now and in the future for their international violations, drafts are more important than usual.

It’s very likely there was an offer. Just because you and I don’t know anything about it doesn’t mean anything. The Braves don’t announce offers to free agents and potential trade partners. Look at how this ce out. There weren’t even any rumblings preceding the Braves moves to aquire Donaldson and now McCann.

And how badly can this go wrong. The contract us for 1 year/$2m. This isn’t the kind of contract that would stop the Braves from bringing on someone like Ramos.

There aren’t much, if any, Financial risks with McCann or Flowers.

But if they struggle offensively/defensively, while the Braves, once again, contending for postseason play…desperation will set in for better C play. Very viable “if”

Especially if all the good(Grandall, Ramos, JTR) are signed/dealt elsewhere.

Aside from it being cool to have McCann back, the Marlins are freaking idiots for limiting their possible Realmuto return by refusing to deal him to an NL East club.

If packages were similar, sure, you’d prefer not to trade a player in division, but to state beforehand you won’t is asinine.

Your job is to get the best package possible back for Realmuto, regardless of where he goes. Especially considering their subpar returns thus far on Stanton and Yelich, you’d think they’d be more desperate to get a haul for Realmuto divisions be damned.

Look up any report you want, the Marlins did not want to trade him within the division. They made that clear enough that too potential suitors opted for catchers in their mid-30’s.

For just $2M, this is a good dollars and cents deal. I can also see a potential marketing plan, especially if they bring back Kimbrel as well. Maybe a nostalgia marketing plan can increase attendance by 500,000, and assuming an average ticket price of $40, that’s an additional $20M in ticket revenues alone, plus concessions, parking, etc. That would be enough to pay their payrolls plus. Admittedly I’m just pulling these attendance numbers and ticket prices out of my hat, but I think the principle is valid.

McCann will probably function as a 3rd catcher and maybe play 1b a couple of times. My guess is he was signed to be a valuable late inning PH, and a mentor of sorts

I am not say McCann can’t be a good pinch hitter but I really don’t see it. Catchers play their careers with a lot of responsibilities other than just hitting I don’t know how easy an adjustment it could be to just sit around and wait to be called on to hit. I don’t see Lenny Harris or Eric Hinske in him.

The Mariners won’t trade Diaz by himself if they don’t get Wright or Soroka. They would probably ask us to take Cano and also add Albies and Wright to your list.

This signing only benefits McCann personally. It sets the Braves back. Not a good move by AA.
