Cardinals, Chris Beck Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | November 30, 2018 at 11:59am CDT

The Cardinals are in agreement with right-hander Chris Beck on a minor league contract, tweets Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. He’ll presumably compete for a bullpen spot in Spring Training and serve as Triple-A depth if he doesn’t crack the roster.

Beck. 28, posted a 4.50 ERA in 34 innings between the White Sox and Mets in 2018, though his 21-to-20 K/BB ratio in that short time was obviously cause for some concern. Beck, a second-round draft pick of the ChiSox in 2012, has yet to find his footing at the big league level, as he’s struggled to a 5.88 ERA through 130 innings.

Beck did average better than 95 mph on his heater last season and has fared a bit better in the minor leagues, where he’s logged a 4.05 ERA, 7.3 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and 0.5 HR/9 in 188 2/3 innings across parts of five seasons.

So tired of the Cardinals not doing anything monumental. I swear they go the cheapest route they can…or make dumb decisions and spend too much… and then complain that they cant break the post season.

Jesus, it’s not even the winter meetings yet. Last year they wouldve had Stanton if he wanted to play in STL and they did add Ozuna.

So, to be clear, in the same sentence you both complain that they don’t spend enough money on players and that they have spent too much money on players. Okay…

The Cardinals had the #9 payroll last season. But yeah they dont spend. Some people need a reality check.

This is a stupid take. They were in on Donaldson and have been in on lots of big players the past couple years. They’re not trying to be cheap. Also, a minor signing like this does not preclude them from making a big signing. You would be ignorant to think otherwise

Nobody wants to play in St. Louis given the choice, sorry.

Name a single “big time” free agent that has?

Ok I’ll give you maybe Carlos Beltran but that was over a decade ago.

It’s a depth slash potential upside signing. No big deal, he won’t start out on the 40 man roster. I’m more bothered by J Fernandez being left unprotected. I’d like to see them trade three guys on the 40 for one, pick T Jay in the rule five draft and protect J Fernandez. Martinez, Mikolas and Brebbia for Arrenando, Pint, and Jon Gray. Something like that.

It’s too late to protect Fernandez the deadline was last week. Jay would be a good pickup but their 40 man is full. They’d have to make a trade that made room on the 40 man to pick anyone in the rule 5.

I said the trade that makes room on both the 40 and 25. I thought so on Fernandez.

If I were a St. Louis fan I would hope for another missed playoff season in 2019 and hope that ownership finally decides to get rid of the root of the problem and that would be Mozeliak.

It is not all Mozeliak. The “GM” Girsh, a Numbers Guy, is working the analytical numbers. He has been doing it for the last 3 seasons. Results: NO PLAY-OFFS. Working on Number 4.

Here we go again! Trust me, there will be no impact current all star quality players coming to St. Louis for 2019. Mozeliak just isn’t geared in that direction. He’s not going to change. Even though the owners are putting up s smoke screen that he is on the hot seat unless he gets some star quality players.

Didnt we have almost the same record as the Braves last year, and that’s with our opening day starting rotation missing over 100 starts. 52 wins in 2019 lol. Need to lay off that southern kush

Yes, the Braves had a better record with half the payroll and also have ten times higher of a ceiling moving forward. The Braves have the Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year. The Cards fired their manager and have no pitching, offense or defense.

100-plus losses for the Cards and y’all know it.
