Cardinals, Chris Beck Agree To Minor League Deal

The Cardinals are in agreement with right-hander Chris Beck on a minor league contract, tweets Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. He’ll presumably compete for a bullpen spot in Spring Training and serve as Triple-A depth if he doesn’t crack the roster.

Beck. 28, posted a 4.50 ERA in 34 innings between the White Sox and Mets in 2018, though his 21-to-20 K/BB ratio in that short time was obviously cause for some concern. Beck, a second-round draft pick of the ChiSox in 2012, has yet to find his footing at the big league level, as he’s struggled to a 5.88 ERA through 130 innings.

Beck did average better than 95 mph on his heater last season and has fared a bit better in the minor leagues, where he’s logged a 4.05 ERA, 7.3 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and 0.5 HR/9 in 188 2/3 innings across parts of five seasons.

Players Electing Free Agency

Quite a few players will hit the open market this fall, and they’ll do so by way of varying mechanisms. The end of the regular season triggered a recent wave of free agents, consisting of a certain subset of players — namely, those who were outrighted from 40-man rosters during the season and accepted minor-league assignments at that time despite having the right to elect free agency. Players in that situation are entitled instead to hit the open market at season’s end, if they were not added back to the 40-man roster in the meantime.

  • Right-hander Chris Beck cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Mets and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas, Erin Fish of MLB.com reports (via Twitter). Claimed off waivers out of the White Sox organization earlier this year, Beck tossed 10 1/3 innings for the Mets and allowed six runs on 10 hits (three homers) and more walks issued (nine) than strikeouts recorded (five). The former second-rounder once rated as one of the more promising arms in the White Sox’ system, but he’s struggled to a 5.88 ERA with 6.0 K/9, 5.1 BB/9, 1.87 HR/9 and a 43.1 percent ground-ball rate in 130 Major League innings.

Mets To Designate Chris Beck

The Mets have designated righty Chris Beck for assignment, Tim Healey of Newsday reports on Twitter. That creates a roster opening for the activation of lefty Jerry Blevins, who had been on the bereavement list.

Beck, 27, landed with New York in a mid-season waiver claim after opening the year with the White Sox. He has worked to a cumulative 4.50 ERA in 34 MLB frames on the season, his fourth-straight campaign with some time in the bigs.

Though the bottom-line results have been better this year than in prior efforts — Beck entered the season with a 6.38 ERA in 96 career innings — the 2018 showing has not really been all that promising. He has allowed eight long balls already on the year while handing out twenty walks against just 21 strikeouts.

Mets Claim Chris Beck

The Mets have claimed righty Chris Beck off waivers from the White Sox, per club announcements. The 27-year-old had been designated for assignment by the Chicago organization.

Beck came up as a starter but has mostly worked in a relief role in recent years. He has 119 2/3 MLB innings under his belt, with a cumulative 5.94 ERA and 6.1 K/9 against 5.0 BB/9. The results have improved so far in 2018, as Beck owns a 4.18 ERA in 23 2/3 frames. Frankly, the peripherals don’t really indicate that he has made any strides, though Beck is working at a career-high 95.8 mph with his average fastball.

Perhaps the Mets feel they can unlock something from the former second-rounder. Of course, the club also may simply feel Beck will help improve the team’s depth situation as several hurlers filter back from the DL.

White Sox Activate Carlos Rodon, Designate Chris Beck

The White Sox have activated left-hander Carlos Rodon from the 60-day disabled list and designated righty Chris Beck for assignment, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times was among those to report.

The 25-year-old Rodon will make his season debut against the Red Sox on Saturday after missing the first couple months of 2018 while working back from arthroscopic left shoulder surgery. Rodon underwent the procedure last September to repair a “significant” case of bursitis that helped limit him to 69 1/3 innings. However, he looked strong during his four-start rehab assignment, including three outings with Triple-A Charlotte, where he pitched to a 1.42 ERA with 22 strikeouts against five walks in 12 2/3 innings.

Rodon hasn’t been nearly that dominant during his major league career, but he has emerged as a solid starter since going third in the 2014 draft. Overall, Rodon has recorded a 3.95 ERA, 9.22 K/9, 3.76 BB/9 and a 45.1 percent groundball rate across 373 2/3 innings. He’s currently making a $2.3MM salary in the first of four potential arbitration-eligible seasons.

Beck, 27, has been a member of the White Sox since they selected him in the second round of the 2012 draft. He debuted in the majors in 2015, the same year as Rodon, but hasn’t been nearly as successful as his teammate. Beck has registered a 5.94 ERA with 6.09 K/9, 4.96 BB/9 and a 42.1 percent grounder rate in 119 2/3 innings (97 appearances, one start). He opened 2018 with 23 2/3 innings of 4.18 ERA ball and 6.08 K/9 against 4.18 BB/9 prior to his designation.

White Sox Place Miguel Gonzalez On 10-Day DL, Transfer Danny Farquhar To 60-Day DL

The White Sox announced on Monday that they’ve placed right-hander Miguel Gonzalez on the 10-day DL and selected the contract of right-hander Chris Beck from Triple-A Charotte. Right-hander Danny Farquhar, who was hospitalized over the weekend in a terrifying scene after collapsing in the dugout due to a brain aneurysm, has been moved from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list in order to open a roster spot for Beck.

The health and well-being of Farquhar, at present, is the greatest concern in the otherwise small sequence of roster moves. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote over the weekend that Farquhar is in stable but critical condition after undergoing multiple surgeries this weekend, adding that the right-hander will be hospitalized for at least the next three weeks following the career-threatening medical emergency.

We pointed our readers to Nightengale’s column last night, but it’s well worth a look for those who have yet to read. It’s filled with quotes from current and former teammates of Farquhar and some harrowing details on the past 72 hours for a right-hander who, by all accounts, has been beloved in each clubhouse of which he’s been a part. I’ll echo sentiments from other members of the MLBTR staff in sending best wishes to Farquhar and his family as the baseball world hopes for a full recovery.

Turning to the shorter-term roster moves in today’s announcement, Gonzalez will be out for at least the next week (the move is retroactive to April 19) due to inflammation in his right rotator cuff. The Sox didn’t provide any sort of timeline on his injury, though there’s no indication at present that the injury is serious.

Beck, 27, will get another look with the ChiSox after previously being outrighted off the 40-man roster. A second-round pick back in 2012, he’s seen time in the Chicago bullpen in each of the past three seasons but never logged an ERA south of 6.00. Beck throws hard, averaging 95 mph on his fastball in 64 innings last year, but that hasn’t translated to much in terms of strikeouts in the Majors. In 96 big league frames, he has a meager 42-to-34 K/BB ratio. He’s off to a fast start in Triple-A this year, however, with just two runs allowed and a 13-to-3 K/BB ratio in nine innings pitched.

The White Sox announced today that right-handers Chris Beck and Tyler Danish have cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Charlotte, thus removing them from the 40-man roster. The moves will help pave the way for Chicago’s newest slate of 40-man roster additions, which includes minor league outfielders Eloy Jimenez, Luis Alexander Basabe and Micker Adolfo; minor league lefty Ian Clarkin; and minor league first baseman Casey Gillaspie, per the team’s announcement.

Beck, 27, soaked up 64 2/3 innings out of the White Sox’ bullpen in 2017 but struggled to a 6.40 ERA with an unsightly 42-to-34 K/BB ratio along the way. The 2012 second-rounder averaged nearly 95 mph on his heater in the process but proved extremely susceptible to home runs (2.23 HR/9). Beck does have a more palatable 3.72 ERA in 162 frames at the Triple-A level, though he’s averaged just 6.9 K/9 there in spite of his solid velocity.

Danish, meanwhile, has just 6 2/3 minor league innings under his belt — all coming in the past two seasons. Also a former second-round pick (2013), the 23-year-old was considered to be one of the Sox’ most promising minor league arms in the low minors before stalling in the upper levels. Danish logged a 5.47 ERA with just 4.6 K/9 against 3.1 BB/9 in Triple-A this past season and posted ERA marks in the mid- to upper-4.00s at Double-A in Triple-A from 2015-16.

With the exception of Adolfo, each of the new 40-man additions was acquired by the White Sox within the past 12 months on the trade market. Jimenez (acquired in the Jose Quintana swap) is considered among the top five to 10 prospects in all of baseball. Adolfo, Basabe (Chris Sale trade), Clarkin (Todd Frazier/David Robertson/Tommy Kahnle trade) and Gillaspie (Dan Jennings trade) are not quite as highly regarded but are all among Chicago’s top 30 overall prospects, per MLB.com.
