Cubs Claim Johnny Field From Twins

By Steve Adams | November 1, 2018 at 3:45pm CDT

The Cubs announced Thursday that they’ve claimed outfielder Johnny Field off waivers from the Twins.

Field, 26, split the 2018 season between the Rays and Twins, making his big league debut for the former and eventually landing with the latter via a series of waivers claims. The former fifth-round pick (Rays, 2013) totaled 233 plate appearances last season and hit .222/.254/.403 with nine homers, 13 doubles and four steals. Field punched out an alarming 72 times against just seven walks in that time, though he also saw time at all three outfield spots and posted slightly above-average overall marks.

Why Granite? Aside from this year (battled injuries), he’s always posted very strong numbers in the minors. He had a limited MLB opportunity in 2017, performed okay (particularly when you factor in irregular playing time) and always put out a competitive AB. Granite profiles as a very solid depth option for a team that could definitely use it.

I’m guessing it’s because including him, they now have four forth OF in AAA and above (Cave, Wade, Reed and Granite). And if you include Grossman, you’ve got five. I personally wouldn’t count Grossman as an OF, but some may.

Not sure I’d agree with cutting him loose, but it’s getting cramped. Good problem to have in my opinion. Best 4th OF depth they’ve had in a very long time.

Nice guy. 100% hustle but literally nothing stands out. Doubt that he’ll make the team.

People who are saying he will be a major part of the Cubs next season need to relax. They probably claimed him because they hope to pass him through waivers themselves, so he can be AAA depth.

That’s how it works. Many teams will do that.

Along with the guy from yesterday, both might be off the 40 Man roster by Election Day.

Adding depth is a good thing. Field would have been a nice bench option in September for the Cubs.

Was hoping for Target Field to get claimed by Cubs, who would immediately DFA it, paving the way for the Twins to sign a retractable roof.
