Cardinals Avoid Arbitration With Marcell Ozuna

By Jeff Todd | January 11, 2019 at 4:21pm CDT

The Cardinals have agreed to avoid arbitration with outfielder Marcell Ozuna for a $12.25MM salary. Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com tweeted the agreement, with Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporting the terms.

Ozuna had been projected by MLBTR and contributor Matt Swartz to earn a $13.4MM salary for the 2019 season. He’ll check in a fair sight shy of that number in his final arb-eligible season, though his salary is still within ten percent of the projected amount.

Also locking in a pay rate was reliever Dominic Leone. He’ll earn $1.26MM after an injury-shortened campaign, just a smidge under the $1.3MM predicted amount. We had heard previously that the club agreed with starter Michael Wacha.

What incentive would Ozuna have to sign a long term deal coming off a down year with one more season before FA.

He may have 200 rubies with Carpenter, Goldy and Harper batting in front of him:)

Especially since they play on a diamond of emerald color with silver sluggers, and a platinum glove winner.

And the rubies match the color of the glasses the fans wear.

Rubies sounds better in the same sentence as Goldy.

Ozuna’s defense in left field makes me shake my head at times and I’m not even a cardinal fan. That gaf on that stupid dive he made in Philadelphia for starters lol

I sipped the kool-aid and believed the hype when they made the trade for Ozuna. Then I saw him try to throw a ball into the infield and I was pissed! This guy was the replacement for Matt Holiday? Hell No !I hope he has a great year or first half and flip him at the deadline. We have plenty other guys who can match His production, cheaper

He was injured. Don’t you know that or do you live under a rock?

Here’s the rock I live under. The Marcel Ozuna they have shown for 6 years under my rock has posted these OPS numbers in his career. 693, 772, 691, 773, 924, 758. So what my rock country saw is a 5 year average to below average player with 1 great year. And he was injured before the trade, yet Mozeliak still traded for him. Now he’s going to pay him over $12M. Let’s hope he gets closer to that 900 OPS and not the 700-750 OPS.

Mozeliak!!!! Just hearing that name means injury prone, has been players who he signs or extends to several years of big money for no production. He’ll never be able to resign Goldschmidt for 2020, unless he signs a major star, long term for 2019. The bad part is, the owners see this and could care less.

Bingo. Mozeliak has been skating for about 4 years now. He should have been fired for hiring Matheny, and if not that, fired for waiting too long to get rid of him last year. Now he has some deer in headlights as his gopher. It’s like watching Dumb and Dumber on a continuous loop.

Matheny was definitely a DeWitt special, which probably ended up costing Mo’s legacy at least 1 more title. He’s one of the best GMs in the game and the Cards have the 2nd best record over his tenure. Cards fans have serious affluenza.

“Mo’s legacy”. “One of best GMs in the game:”. The Mozeliak era was run by Luhnow, and when he left, a hacking scandal developed. THAT is the Mozeliak legacy. Now he has some goofy, deer in headlights fetching his daily Starbucks and dry cleaning.
