Pitching Market Rumors: Giants, Gray, Rangers, Allen, Scrabble

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | January 14, 2019 at 5:21pm CDT

The pitching market continues to proceed at a steady but unhurried pace, with today’s reunion between the Giants and Derek Holland marking the latest signing of note. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle was among those to cover the news from the team’s perspective. While the organization has undergone front office changes since Holland wrapped up a solid performance on a one-year deal in 2018, new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi still made the call to bring back the southpaw. That was due in no small part to the club’s positive experience with him last year, both on and off the field. Zaidi emphasized that the team still wants to find more rotation depth this winter, though it’s far from clear that any further MLB signings will be pursued. It certainly seems possible that the club will add plausible rotation pieces via trade or on minor-league deals.

Here’s the latest on the pitching market:

  • Talks surrounding Sonny Gray have “ramped up” since Yankees’ lefty CC Sabathia was cleared to resume baseball activities last week, Fancred’s Jon Heyman tweets. The Yankees are discussing Gray with six teams, including the Reds, per Heyman, though previous reports had indicated that Cincinnati’s interest had cooled off since adding Alex Wood and Tanner Roark. Gray agreed to a $7.5MM salary over the weekend, falling shy of MLBTR’s $9.1MM projection and perhaps making him a bit more appealing to clubs who’ve already added a fair bit of payroll this offseason.
  • The Rangers are maintaining interest in adding some free-agent arms to their bullpen and have been in recent contact with the representatives for right-handers Adam Ottavino and Cody Allen, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter links). However, the likelier route is that the Rangers will add multiple lower-cost relievers rather than one higher-end piece. Rosenthal adds Adam Warren to the list of potential Texas targets and notes that the Rangers are also still looking to add an infielder. Meanwhile, La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune writes that the Twins still have interest in Allen. Minnesota was connected to Allen earlier this winter and has since signed Blake Parker, though they’re still in the market for additional relief help. Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey knows Allen quite well from his days in the Indians’ front office.
  • Free-agent lefty Marc Rzepczynski is hosting a showcase for big league teams tomorrow, tweets Fancred’s Jon Heyman. The 33-year-old southpaw struggled tremendously in 2018 both at the Majors and in Triple-A, and he’ll look to audition for clubs on what figures to be a minor league deal with a chance to reestablish himself as a credible option. “Scrabble” has worked as a lefty specialist for the bulk of his career, as he hasn’t topped 50 innings since 2011 despite averaging 64 MLB appearances per season from 2012-17. In his career, he’s held lefties to an awful .225/.296/.305 batting line through 857 plate appearances.

In terms of xabial, EVERYONE please treat him as one would the dirty panhandler on the off ramp of the interstate. If you just ignore him, hopefully he will eventually go away, and bother someone else.

Regardless whether it’s positive or negative attention, the troll has a need to be fed.

He is the equivalent of that annoying friend that asks you if you’re dead, only five minutes after not responding to their initial text..He knows he’s being obnoxious, yet he doesn’t care that people find him extremely annoying, immature, and childish. His sole concern is being heard, and getting some type of reaction out of any and every one.

Xabial is like a stray cat, if you feed him, he is only going to keep coming back. However, with his chronic addiction to attention, if we all just ignore him, and refuse to acknowledge his existence, his underlying mental issues will leave him no choice but to seek his fix elsewhere..

Three way trade: Yankees, Angels, Indians. Indians get Ellsbury (they need OFs bad!) and prospects, Angels get Gray (big boost to their rotation!) and prospects, and Yankees get Kluber and Trout. Then the Yankees sign Harper!

For one year of Sonny Gray coming off an awful season, the Yankees will be lucky to get someone ranked 11-20 from the Reds. If they’re trading Trammell, it will be for all Kluber, not Gray.

I don’t want Sonny Gray. There is no point not getting an ace. I rotation of Roark, Gray, Disco, Castillo and Wood is better. However, it’s not enough to compete for a real wildcard spot. What’s the point in any of this if you don’t get someone that can get you a real shot at competing. We don’t need 5 number 3 or 4 starters. It’s all a waste of time if you don’t get a Kuechel , Kluber, Bumgarner or Greinke type. The Reds will hit with anyone, but they have to get a stud.

Reds are prob done. All they did was trade salaries and while we are better we have no pitching to compete in this league. Another thing us Gennett will be gone to at end if season, so we will be worse in 2020 then 2018. They will hope to flip players we got in trade and Gennett but as usual we cant get much out if a rental player, so we keep them and dont sign any and lose them all for nothing. They can say we went all in and didn’t win so time to start a rebuild and try to compete in 2030.

They aren’t all in, we can’t say that. The biggest victory from that trade was riding themselves of Bad Attitude Bailey and his contract. That was a win. We have no idea what will happen going forward into the Spring. This team carried quite a few young pitchers into the season last year, and they were beat up. But, they have a number of talented young pitchers. If one or two break out, this team could contend with that offense. We haven’t heard a word about their offseasons progress yet, and it happens every season…someone breaks out and it’s contagious.

Absolutely. Warren is a supremely underrated arm who is fantastic in a multi-inning role. I think he’d fit wonderfully on a team relying on bullpen, opener, strategies. Especially considering his likely reasonable price tag, he’d fit well on the Rays.

An average MLB pitcher, let’s say they go 8-8. If you removed half of their games…just because, then they would be great! That is what you are saying to do for Gray; remove his NYS starts. I guess the Rockies pitchers should petition the league to remove all of the games from their starts at Coors Field?

Cash really handled the sonny grey thing well didn’t he? first he overpaid…( a year earlier he could have had sale albeit for more but he gave 3 top 100 guys for overcast gray). Then he announces to the world Gray sucks in pinstripes and can’t handle the stadium or the pressure.

Its like trying to sell a prosche, that has a busted engine, mostly worn tires, a cracked interior with dents for the price of a 2 year old certified used one off lease….

I love the Yankees but am wildly perplexed about people here being enamored with Cashman. I will give him credit for improving the farm 3-5 years ago but now he has destroyed that, and mostly for nothing. hence the undriveable Porsche

Cashman gave the A’s 2 damaged goods in which one of them hasn’t pitched in almost 2 years I belive and Mateo has sadly not worked out in their minor league system. Yes he said out loud he wanted to trade gray but trading him or not doesn’t effect the team at all

Also how did he destroy the farm ? A bunch of these kids have been called up and made the strong young core they have in judge, Sanchez, severino, andujar, Torres. Yes cashman has done an amazing job sonny gray or not. He built this core in a short period of time and literally turned brendon Ryan into Stanton when you connect the dots lmao

I agree Yankeepatriot farm systems on good teams are always changing. If you have really good players on your farm they graduate and become core players for your team. The Yankees are graduating guys and making a few trades so naturally the farm system will start to not be as good as it once was. You don’t get a World Series for having the best farm system you get for having the best major league team.

As Yankeepatriot pointed out the Yankees really didn’t give up much to acquire Gray, there was risk on both sides in that trade. So far neither team has won that trade.

And yes the Yankees could have had Sale, the price only would have been a package including both Severino and Sanchez plus at least two other prospects (at least this is what Cashman said two months ago).

Pretty good comp if you ask me. Both former top of the rotation pitchers who have since fallen from grace. Gray had a higher K/9 (8.5 > 7.5) but also a higher BB/9(3.9 > 2.2). Harvey threw more innings last year (155>130) but also gave up more HRs/FB (15%>13%). Gray had the better xFIP (4.1 Gray vs 4.2 Harvey) and thus was the “better” pitcher overall. Still the numbers are reasonably close on the surface, certainly enough to justify the comp.

Surface numbers justify nothing! Sonny pitches in AL East in hitters paek. Harvey pitched in Cincy. Stop nothing you say is gonna change the fact that Cashman isn’t dumping him to war g another team bring his value back in a non DH big NL park and then flip him for allot more. Not happening.

Not saying I agree with angelsintheoutfield but you do realize Cincy is a very good hitters park.

Yet he more or less matched a reasonably healthy Gray. Hmmm that’s weird…

Farhan really doesn’t have to do anything dramatic. The Giants problems are in drafting and developing…THAT”S the area that needs to be addressed. And there’s no sense going into “tank” mode, not with that fan base.

Continue to tread water until those contracts run out, and hopefully replace them with a good pipeline…but that pipeline has to be the main concern…..

I don’t get the ‘not with that fan base’ attitude some people on this site claim. The Giants have cleared roughly 3+ millioin people a year since they moved in. In the mid-2000s when they have three consecutive under .500 years they still drew big. From all the fans I know we are all aching for a rebuild. It wouldn’t affect my going to three games a year. I’d love to watch some fresh meat out there, personally.

So I don’t think it’s the fans, I think it’s the ownership. As I’ve said before, I think it’s all to do with that new area they are building past McCovey Cove. They wanted to keep over 3 million butts in the seats because it raises the value of the property when they want to sell to new businesses and rent apartments. It became apparent after the last few years sinking more money into the team wasn’t working, so they got a new GM to emulate what the Dodgers did. If the team completely tanked their attendance would still hit 2 million, which is still great. But that extra million really can get that Panera Bread, Starbucks, and dot-com company to rent out some space.

4 way trade idea just because I love XMan’s aura on this thread:

Yanks send San Diagooo Sonny Gray.
    Yanks send Elsbury to Arizona.
Yanks send Stanton to the Dodgers.

Dodgers send Julio Urias and a top 10 prospect to the Yanks.

Arizona sends Grienke to San Diagooo.

Padres send 2 top ten prospects to the Arizona.

So to sum this shit up:

Yanks get Urias and a prospect.
    Dodgers get Stanton.
Arizona gets Elsbury and 2 prospects.
San Diagoooo gets Gray and Grienke.

San Diego sends two prospects to Arizona.

Unless the Yankees are desperate to unload Ellsbury and are wishing to rid themselves of Stanton’s contract, a return of Urias and a prospect is an absolute non starter unless the prospect is Jesus Christ himself.
This would be a stupid trade from a Yankee perspective unless they were going to use the Stanton relief as a way to sign Manny or Harper!

I feel like the Yankees would live to unload 3 bad contracts and get Urias without taking any bad contracts on in return

How Sonny Gray went from a non-tender candidate to being worth a top prospect is beyond me. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to have him in Anaheim, but let’s be real about his value. Lets say he’s a 2 WAR pitcher next year being paid $7.5m. That means there’s roughly $12.5m of surplus value on Gray, the equivalent to a 45-50 grade prospect (#7-12 range in most organizations). That Cashman was every asking for top guys is insane

Guess you’re not adept at negotiating!
You ask for the moon, and sometimes you get lucky! Gray has value, it just depends on getting return value from someone that values him as well!
Don;t know how you came up with all this surplus value numbers and 45-50 grade stuff but really don’t care…..

It’s an artificial valuation system that doesn’t have much correlation to actual money. What team in their right mind would gladly pay a 1 WAR player $10M per year?

No team would. But isn’t that what 1 WAR is theoretically worth? I’m pretty sure fangraphs or baseball America, or maybe Brian Kenny? I’m not sure, but someone came out and said that for every WAR, a player is worth about 9 Million. I’m not saying I agree, but that’s what I’ve heard.

Lol the Angels. We’re paying Harvey $11-14m and Cahill $9m.

Like I said, it’s an artificial construct. I can see using it to compare players, but it doesn’t connect to real world money. I think in the real world, a 2 WAR corner player might be worth at most about $10M per year. An up the middle player maybe a little more, and that’s being generous. $18M for a borderline starter is way too much.

I don’t fault Cashman for over asking but Yankee fans took that to be a sign of Gray’s value. It got silly shortly after. Gray’s worth a marginal prospect, if someone over pays good for NYY.

The X talk was fun to read in the comments but in all seriousness what do we think the Yanks would get in return for gray? A fringe top 100 at best?

Sonny Gray at $7.5m is overpaid… he hasn’t been a quality starter in several seasons now and it seems like his years of elite pitching are long in the past… perhaps it’s arm trouble or other lingering injuries, but he was a real mess of a pitcher last season and now he’s going to likely be dealt to a middling team where it’s unlikely to get any better. I’d love to see him prove any naysayers wrong and become a legit 1 or 2 starter with a new club, but I just don’t see it.
