AL Notes: Angels, Rangers, Lindor, Sano

By Jeff Todd | February 18, 2019 at 11:28pm CDT

Angels owner Arte Moreno discussed a few topics of interest today, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register covered. Moreno spoke positively of his interactions with the city of Anaheim regarding the club’s ballpark, seemingly representing an improvement in relations. He also gave a vote of confidence to the Billy Eppler-led front office. Most interestingly, though, Moreno explained the organization’s approach to spending on player contracts. It’s not about staying beneath the luxury tax line, he said; rather, the organization budgets to “allocate about 50 percent of [its] revenue towards payroll.” Moreno also added that he “bust[s] through that every year,” so it seems there’s some flexibility. Generally, though, the position helps explain some of the team’s spending patterns — including its approach this winter. Moreno says there’s still cash available for mid-season additions. Meanwhile, it’s still tough to gauge whether there’s a realistic possibility of a new deal with the incomparable Mike Trout. As MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger writes, Trout declined to comment on the possibility of a new deal at all, while Moreno would do little more than reiterate that there is interest on the team’s behalf.

More from the American League:

  • The Rangers are considering the possibility of pursuing extensions with several young players, according to MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan. At this point, though, it’s not clear that the team has engaged any agents. Neither is it evident which players might be approached. Sullivan tabs Joey Gallo, Nomar Mazara, and Jose Leclerc as the likeliest candidates. That would indeed seem to be a plausible trio. All have reasonable cases for significant money. Mazara is already into his arbitration years. Gallo and Leclerc have one more campaign to go, but each promises to accumulate the kinds of counting stats (home runs and saves, respectively) that pay well in arbitration.
  • There’s little doubt that the Indians would love to find a way to extend star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who has reportedly spurned record-setting offers in the past. He says he’s still happy for the time being to go year to year, as Zack Meisel of The Athletic tweets. Lindor says he “love[s] everything about Cleveland,” but right now is “focused on arbitration” (so far as contractual matters go). That’s working out just fine, as he took down a big $10.55MM first-year arb payday. Ultimately, Lindor says, he may consider a long-term deal, though he certainly did not sound as if that’s something he’s particularly keen to pursue. Per Lindor: “If the Indians come up with the right numbers and at some point it happens — which, I’m not even thinking about — we’ll see.”
  • True, reports on conditioning entering camp are a tired trope. But given all the heartache over the years surrounding the physical form of Twins slugger Miguel Sano, it seems relevant that he’s said to be in the best shape of his life — or, at least, the best shape of his MLB career. As Dan Hayes of The Athletic writes (subscription link), Sano embarked upon a robust workout program this winter and seems to be in top form. Whether that extends to his productivity on the field remains to be seen, but it’s a positive start.

    Lindor should take 10/220.
    Small guy, won’t age great. Jose Reyes with better power. Take the money.
    Corriea is the better long term.

      I disagree. He is going to watch Machado sign for well more than that and Lindor is a more complete player in my opinion and with a much better attitude. Lindor can do better than 22/year.

        Well that $22M per year is affected by two years of arb.

        If he’s going to make $35-40M the next years in arb, it’s really a 8/$180M deal and locks in his last two arb years. While he’ll probably do better than that 2 years from now. That’s also assuming no regression between now and then.

      I can kind of agree that in the long-run Correa is built to age better, but at the same time I don’t expect Lindor to decline for at least another 6-7 years when he hits his thirties. He’s only 25, and he could probably get max value when he tests the market as he’d still be in his prime.

        I agree that somewhere in the $280-300 million range over 10 years is reasonable, especially when factoring in the fact that two of those years are through arbitration. For a player of his caliber, it’s pretty fair.

        Will the Indians pay that though? No way.

      If he stays healthy Lindor will have a higher career WAR after his 6th season than Reyes will through 16 seasons.

      Reyes was always a below average defender. He was a contact hitter with game changing speed on the bases.

      Not sure how he can be compared to Lindor at all. The only comparable stat is career batting average.

      What’s the point of bringing Correa into this? Do 6’4 middle infielders have a rich history of health in MLB? Both Lindor and Correa have been around for 4 years. Lindor has the edge so far. I’ll take the better + smaller player with great defense at SS over the big man.

      The Jose Reyes comp is terrible and based on pretty much nothing else than the fact that they’re shortstops. Maybe he’s Honus Wagner!

      Also, there was a decent debate a few years ago of whether Lindor or Correa would be better long term, but all along I felt Lindor was better. Now, even trying to argue the opposite is lunacy.

      That is nothing more than an urban legend saying that smaller players age quicker or don’t hold up as well. There is zero validity to that. A lot of the smaller players stay in much better shape than the bigger guys.

We have lost Brantely,Encarnacion,Gomes and Alonso. ….And they intend to replace them with Luplow,Bauer,Plawecki, and Greg Allen? Not one of these guys hit above .230. or shown any power…and not one of them would start for any other team in the league.. And they are talking about a retread veteran reliever…Tyler Clippard? .. What good is having Kluber and any kind of pitching …IF WE CAN’T SCORE? God help our pitching staff..

      It’s not all about the money, but we’re not talking a $30 million contract (total) you can get for $25 million with the hometown discount. Maybe Carrasco has spoiled your thinking. But when you have such a dynamic talent like this that could pull a $250+million contract and therefore farrrr out of he usual Indians shipping at the scratch and dent section you have to respect that. They knew Sabathia was leaving years ago and dealt him, they knew other players were leaving too, and now you know Linder is all but gone so enjoy him while it lasts. And another chance for me to say the league needs a salary cap like every other league can somehow operate under.

      Unless it’s 10/360M+ (assuming Harper gets 10/320M ish) there’s no benefit for trout to sign an extension. Trout is a once in a generation talent and there will be a ton of teams in on him. Why not let teams bid against each other? I know the market hasn’t been great to free agents but there are exceptions to every rule and trout is one of those.

        Maybe he likes California, maybe he is comfortable with the only organization he’s ever known, maybe he likes being relatively out of the spotlight. Everyone projects their own reasons that a player would sign or stay in a certain place, there are a ton of factors that I didn’t even list. It’s not always about the location/money/team/chance of winning. Big life decisions are complicated and we don’t know what is important to Trout

I was simply replying to someone saying that unless he gets x amount of money then there’s no reason to sign an extension

          What are you talkign about. The Angels have Ohtnai, Simmonds a top 10 farm and a top 5 payroll. The 3 of the last four WS winners were The Royals, Astros and Cubs, a real set of historical contenders.

          More likely than not, he’s pressuring the Angels to keep improving, waiting for the market to set and then figuring it out. The ONLY reason he’d leave is if there was a place he really wanted to be specifically (which is a complete unknown). Trout is a unique talent in that I cant a imagine a world in which his current team given the resources doesnt match any deal offered.

        I love one jersey careers! I want October Trout! I want one more year of, surprise, Pujols machine mashing! I want Ohtani to hit homer and strikeout a batter in same WS game! Angels have too much to root for, especially when my Tigers suck!

      They and teams in general can’t afford to let assets like that walk but also can’t afford to give 200-300 mil to several guys.

      As hard as it is to do so, they have to trade the last 1-2 years of premium players contracts if they are unlikely to resign them.

        Exactly, which is why it is so hard for a smaller market club to keep that short windows open and why the league should have a salary cap. Teams like KC can get close one year, then get lucky and win before it all comes crashing down.

    Let’s be fair to Arte. In 2017, they had revenues of 334M (Forbes). Their payroll was 166M (Cot’s).
    Now while we all know lies are told about revenues, that’s pretty close to 50 %, which puts them in the upper 3 or so of expenditures; who cares if he drops a little into a slush fund. You can question the HOW of what they spend, but at least he DOES spend.

      so, he gets 3 million fans a year. times say $100 a person spends in a game which seems low. he also gets $120 million per year from fox. plus parking and advertisement.

        Teams don’t get concessions. There are many Angel tickets at less than 10 bucks a seat.

          Yeas and no; most teams get something from concessions. Individual deals are hard to track. And of course everybody lies.

          Forbes guestimates that every “fanny in the seat” yields $41 in revenue, between ticket price, parking, concessions, etc. (For comparison, the Red Sox number is $95). How much they keep from the revenue is unknown. The Red Sox are almost completely reversely integrated; they own many of their vendors. So they get a pretty good chunk of that $95. I have no idea where the Angels fall on that spectrum.

          Profit doesn’t equal revenue, of course; you have to buy the hot dog before you sell it.

          So, first up, let’s get the usual clarifications out of the way regarding terms like “attendance” in the MLB. We all know that “attendance” does not mean butts in seats or even something as reliable as turnstile clicks, and that it doesn’t account for no shows. Since about 2005, MLB teams no longer have to report any of that stuff when totaling their attendance figures. All that matters is TICKETS SOLD.

    They talk about Sano last year showing up to ST around 20lb overweight as if he had stolen the crown jewels or something. Remember whe the boston globe used to take pictures and hammer Josh beckett for having a slight paunch when he’d show up for ST.

    Remember when George Scott would show up so fat he’d actually wear a warm up jacket during ST games to sweat more of it off he reported so huge and after the game would be out there jogging some more and fielding some grounders.

    Players used to just mostly take the winter off and show up out of shape. I remember seeing those guys up close, for Boston anyway and some were not in very good shape come March.

    Why pick on this guy Sano is beyond me.

      As the money increases, so do expectations.
      But people can be a bit two-faced at times.

      When it’s someone else’s money going to a ball player, they expect the world. But when it’s their own money going for a new car, they handle their investment like it was a delicate flower.

      I get a kick when TV commercials demonstrate how tough a vehicle is by showing it climb steep, rocky roads and swerving to avoid a load of logs falling off a truck. But in real life the driver of one of those ultra-tough vehicles will slow down to 2 mph to take a turn.

      It’s a whole different perspective when it’s YOUR money on the line.

        He played like dog crap. Had he put up an .850+ OPS his weight wouldn’t have been a problem but when you play like that and are out of shape why wouldn’t you hear about it? He gets payed to be an Athlete not sit behind a desk. The bare minimum he should be required to do is not show up 20 lbs overweight.

      2010 = 195lbs
      2011 = 200lbs
      2012 = 210lbs
      2013 = 220lbs
      2014 = 230lbs
      2015 = 250lbs
      2016 = 260lbs
      2017 = 280lbs
      2018 = 295lbs

      This is the approximate Spring Training weight progression for Miguel Sano. He’s on the record as saying he was at his ideal playing weight each year from about 2012-2014. As he’s gained weight, he’s given excuses about why that’s okay, consistently saying playing lighter robbed power and the Twins didn’t want him too light and that he’s now at ideal playing weight. From 210 to 220 to 230.

      The reality is, anything over 230lbs is robbing Sano of speed and quickness, contributing to long term durability issues, and isn’t helping the power. Anything above 260lbs, and he’s not playable at the hot corner.

      At over 275lbs, he was developing stress reactions in his shins from running as his skeletal structure hadn’t adapted to the massive amount of weight he’d put on.

      Miguel Sano doesn’t take his conditioning seriously and that’s demonstrated again this spring. “He’s in the best shape of his life” is the typical response when somebody clearly doesn’t have numbers. He doesn’t know what he weighs? Sure. I’m sure through his entire offseason where he talked about reporting at 250lbs, he never stepped on a scale. He still doesn’t get it. He has to know how important this issue has become and he hired his sister as a nutritionist. That looks terrible. Now to have it look bad and not know what you weigh when you set goal weights in December? There’s no way to take him seriously.

          Sano definitely carries his weight very well in images. I didn’t find any photos, but there’s an interview where he still has a bit of a double chin with no full body shot. My guess is he’s north of 260lbs.

          The Twins have stroked Sano’s ego for years as they’ve found even constructive criticism has a big impact on his confidence level. They seem to be taking the maximum positivity approach again this year. Give me NUMBERS.

          He’s also in a boot from a heel laceration sustained in the Dominican Winter League and he’ll probably miss some significant lower body work out time.

          All in all, color me VERY skeptical on Sano’s commitment to proper conditioning.

          If he was playing last year at 295. 260 is a pretty significant dip. I find it odd he said he didn’t know how much weight he lost. That’s something people who lose a significant amount of weight know the answer to.

      Reporter:” Have you talked to Scott about his weight?’

      To be fair, back when Scott played, many players had jobs during the winter, and not much of a workout regimen. Not so today.

        and there’s the thing were Scott was billed at 6’2 and 200lbs while Miguel Sano was at an optimistic 6’4″ and actually about 295lbs. So Scott was a little over an inch shorter and nearly 100lbs lighter than Sano.

      I criticize Sano for not coming to ST prepared to play and for his poor condition greatly affecting his play. Although he was cleared, Sano also had the alleged run in with the woman that seems to have affected him. The Twins should not have had to send him to Ft. Myers last season.

    It’s evident that unless they’re far and above the highest bidder, Bryce Harper and Manny Machado aren’t too enthused to sign with the Phillies, but Mike Trout loves them. Bryce Harper would “love” to sign out in L.A.; granted, it’s with the Dodgers and not the Angels, but you would think he’d be more interested in signing with the Angels than Phillies since he’s a Vegas guy.

    Too bad it isn’t allowed, because what if the Phillies signed Bryce Harper or Manny Machado to a contract and did a sort of sign-and-trade deal to the Angels for Mike Trout? I’m sure a prospect or two could be added on either end, but the Angels would have a long-term replacement, and Trout would end up where it seems like he wants to sign when he’s a free agent.

    I have a question…if Arte Moreno is putting 50% of revenue back into the on-field product…where is the other 50% going? His pocket? In the vault?

    The Angels franchise makes my head spin. It’s a massive, large market club, they have THE single best player in the game, and they have all of one lone playoff appearance in the seven seasons they’ve had Trout. Trout only has two more years on his contract, it would seem to me it’s now or never for the Angels. Moreno should be pouring it all into this team and going for the gold. If he loses Trout, he at least got an MLB championship out of it.

        Well, Turner Field was actually still very nice. It was only 20 years old.

        To answer your question…

        1. The Ted was in a bad location. The interstate was nearby, for one, and the part of town it is in can be a bit sketchy.

        2. Cobb County, the area that SunTrust Field is in, it’s just much nicer, plus there are trains that will take people to the stadium.

        3. They were able to become the first team to build not just a new stadium, but an entire town to go along with it. Bars, motels, hotels, an amphitheater, shopping centers, restaurants, etc.

        There was nothing wrong with the Ted, it was just an upgrade to get a new stadium that was out of the Atlanta city limits and into the suburbs.

      Revenue is not the same as profit. But, as to where the other money is going, here are some possibilities: rent to the city of Anaheim for the stadium lease; salaries of manager and coaches; salaries of front office personnel and scouts; salaries of minor league players, coaches and managers; advertising.

      There are a lot of expenses that are not obvious.
      Just 43 days a player gets a pension of 34,000 a year. If a player plays one day in the big leagues, he gets insurance for life.

      There are travel expenses, advertising expenses, spring training analytics maintenance, trainers, managers, coaches, minor leagues, scouting and likely a hundred other things.

      Fifty percent going to players is reasonable.

          You should google. My guess is your are not an Angel fan.

          Aug 13th Article. I’ll cut and paste.
          “This Mike Trout Monday will be a brief one, as Trout remains sidelined with the wrist injury that finally landed him on the disabled list on Friday. The Angels expect him to return Thursday for the opening of their four-game set against the Texas Rangers.”

          That Texas series was Aug 15th. His friend died Aug 14th. He came back Aug 24. Those nine extra days were all about his friend.

    Joey Gallo, Nomar Mazara, and Jose Leclerc do deserve a better payday however, I think length of contract for Gallo and Leclerc should be shorter than Mazara. Gallo may or may not be able to improve his contact with runners on base. Leclerc is a young good pitcher. As a pitcher durability is always a question.

    The Twins seem to have a bunch of unprofessional, immature players. Last year Polanco misses 80 games for PEDs. Santana holds off surgery until just before the season starts and basically misses the entire year. Buxton keeps running into immovable objects and has to learn everything from scratch after every single injury. Sano shows up FAT last year and then hires his sister to feed him and now has a gash on his foot is out 7-10 days when he needs to be getting ready for the season.
