NL Notes: Phillies, Kershaw, Strahm

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | March 4, 2019 at 11:40pm CDT

As it plodded forward over a period of months, the free agency of Bryce Harper was more laborious than intriguing for the outside observer. But the twists and turns, the strategies and stratagems, and the overriding uncertainty that blanketed the process are all much more interesting when told in a retrospective, narrative form. In a subscriber-only post, Matt Gelb of The Athletic has penned one of the most fascinating hot stove stories in memory regarding the Phillies’ high-stakes offseason, which culminated recently with the signing of Harper. The 26-year-old star set out seeking a record-setting deal in all aspects (length, guarantee, AAV), per Gelb. He also told the Philadelphia organization during their mid-January meeting that he wanted to pick a long-term home and wasn’t interested in opt-outs. Meanwhile, the club was amply willing to make a lengthy commitment, so long as the competitive balance tax burden wasn’t too onerous. The club’s initial $330MM offer was for a 15-year term, with the final deal coming together when the Phils agreed to knock two years off of the length. By the end of the impeccably crafted article, Harper’s free agent process feels like a roller coaster — a thrilling ride with an utterly predictable result. As Gelb puts it, at the moment of decision, the organization realized that this was “a lifetime deal, a marriage between a starved franchise and the game’s most marketable star.”

Frankly, there’s no substitute for reading the full account, which paints a vibrant picture of the Phils’ winter efforts. Here’s more from the National League:

  • Although the Dodgers remain hopeful that Clayton Kershaw will be ready to make his ninth consecutive Opening Day start, manager Dave Roberts acknowledged to reporters Monday that the left-hander may not be ready to go come March 28 (link via Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times). Kershaw threw from 60 to 70 feet Monday, per DiGiovanna, and Roberts indicated that the lefty continues to trend in the right direction. Even if Kershaw isn’t ready for the opener, there’s no indication to this point that he’d need to miss significant time early in the season. Indeed, as MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick tweets, Roberts says that Kershaw emerged from his throwing session today feeling “pretty excited” with how he felt. Understandably, Roberts also suggested that there’s too much emphasis being placed on Opening Day. If Kershaw isn’t ready to go, the Dodgers will still have Walker Buehler, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Rich Hill, Kenta Maeda, Julio Urias and Ross Stripling as viable rotation pieces, with Brock Stewart and Caleb Ferguson serving as depth options.
  • Padres skipper Andy Green has suggested that the main factor in determining whether lefty Matt Strahm will be in the rotation or bullpen will simply be whether he’s able to get stretched out this spring, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. Strahm tossed 40 pitches in today’s three-inning spring outing, Acee notes, which could bode well for the southpaw’s chances given that there are still three weeks of camp remaining. Strahm, 27, was primarily a reliever in San Diego last season but has started at the minor league level in the past — primarily with the Royals. While Strahm shined as a bullpen option in San Diego last season, it’s understandable that the Friars would want to see if they could potentially coax more innings out of the intriguing southpaw.

Well, here’s to hoping that this saga leads to Philadelphia returning to the Fall Classic. It’d be nice to see Harper finally get to that stage. I want to see what he will do

Gosh, I just don’t get how Steve Adams can think of Harper’s free agency ride as “fascinating” and “thrilling.” I’d be curious to know what he thinks makes it actually so.

Strahm is gonna be great. Richards will be back in July. Lamet coming back soon. Erlin had great 2nd half numbers. Lucchesi, Lauer,Nix just need average seasons. Bullpen will be the best the NL. Hello wildcard.

Where you at red rooster? Got anything to say?

The league never gave Hos anything to hit…why would you last season? 3/4 of the lineup were 1st and 2nd year guys, way easier to get out…

3/4 would be 6 out of 8. Meaning only 2 had more than 1 year of experience going into 2018. Hosmer, Myers, Galvis, uhoh I’m past 2.

Pads won 66 games in 2018. Pythag had them at 65 wins.

For them to finish in 3rd place it probably takes 80 – 82 wins.

Is it doable? Sure, but that’s an awfully big improvement year to year.

Galvis put up 2.3 rWAR last season. Manny put up 5.7 rWAR. Even if Manny jumps back up to a 7 WAR player, that’s a 5 win improvement.

It’s going to take a lot more than just the addition of Manny. It will be interesting to watch.

Well, theoretically the starting rotation might be better; it couldn”t be worse. The bullpen is still going to be strong. If Myers stays healthy and plays 130 or so games at a position he’s good at (left field) that’s a few more wins – he was on pace for a 5+ win season before he got hurt. SOme think Hosmer’s even/odd year thing is real (I’m dubious) but he has been working all offseason at hitting the ball in the air more often. I don’t know how much pressure a player puts on himself after signing the biggest contract in team history, but maybe that contributed to Hosmer’s bad season.

Renfroe is entering his prime and if he could just up the walk rate a bit and show a little more restraint in showing his arm off he could be a pretty good player. Margot has to be better than he was in 2018 – he was hurt and supposedly had some off-field issues. A full season of Franmil Reyes- if they can find the at-bats for him – would help them out quite a bit. Mejia wasn’t one of the best prospects in the game for no reason – even just an offensive/defensive time-share with Hedges would give the Padres a couple more wins behind the plate. Even though Tatis is going to have his playing time manipulated, he should put up about as much value as Galvis, and a full season of Urias will be far more valuable than Pirela or Spangenberg or whoever was playing second last year. I still don’t think that gets them near the postseason, but I could see this team at least approaching .500, with the real leap forward coming in 2020.

Myers played 80 games last year and was worth about 2.5 WAR; therefore he was on pace for 5 wins had he played all season. He’s entering his prime and if the Padres would just leave him in left he might be better at the plate; his bad fielding at third clearly was carrying into the rest of his game last season.

And players improve or decline in consecutive years; generally players entering their prime (around age 27 for most players) improve. That’s basically most of San Diego’s roster. That’s just standard, normal projection. It would be odd for everyone to improve, of course, but it would also be just as asinine for everyone to decline. And there are real reasons to think Hosmer, Margot and Myers will be better than last year, and that Machado will be a little better than, who, Christian Villanueva? Cory Spangenberg?

NL West will be a mess this year… Dodgers on top and then you could put any of the next 4 teams in any order.. Rockies are overrated and the Dbacks are underrated. Giants and Padres are just a big question mark and the Dodgers, sad to admit it as a life long fan, didn’t do much to improve other than replacing Puig with Pollock. Really sad that we did not sign Harper, still don’t think we’re better than the Astros, possibly even worse than the Yankees.

      Richards comes back next year.
Erlin is trash as a starter.
Lauer and nix need a prayer to get to that level this season, maybe in 2020.
Lemet May be back this year, but probably not. He will more then likely going to the minors and pitch there for the season and come back around in 2020.
Strahm could be good if he gets stretched out but will be on a innings limit.

You’re missing the point. If Eflin is so bad, there’s a simple solution: non-tender him. You don’t have that option with Matt Kemp. You have to take back an even worse contract or give up trade chips of your own to get rid of him.

And I love how you just ignore the Trea Turner thing cuz you know you got debunked there. What a troll you are.

Who said anything about Erlin? I was referring to you defending the Kemp trade on the grounds that Zach Eflin isn’t any good. Cuz apparently contracts have no bearing on trade value and apparently Matt Kemp isn’t a 1-WAR player making $21.5m a year.

Turner would have helped the next 4 years and if not for that trade, he could play shortstop, Tatis could play 3rd base, Padres wouldn’t have had to overpay for Manny Machado and they wouldn’t have such a logjam in the outfield. Then next year they could use the money they aren’t paying Myers and Machado to overpay for Gerrit Cole or someone like that.

Not as dumb as your statement that “Trea Turner is always hurt.”

Matt Kemp was an all-star an a stater on a team that went to the World Series, so the Dodgers agreed with me, even if you don’t.

and Zach Eflin isn’t any good!! I will stand by that everyday!

Wtf are you talking about? Turner has spent time on the DL in only one season in his entire professional career: 2017. And the bulk of that was from getting hit by a pitch. Obviously not a recurring type of injury.

The Dodgers clearly don’t agree with you considering they traded away Puig and Wood and took on Homer Bailey (who they promptly released) just to get rid of Kemp. He’s a good player but his trade value is negative cuz of the money owed. Eflin isn’t making any money so worst case scenario his trade value is neutral.

But you said he was injured in all the years before 2018. That was only true for 2017 and even that year most of the time he missed was from being hit by a pitch.

If he were fragile, he would have spent more than 11 days on the DL with non-HBP related injuries in his entire professional career.

You don’t have either of those things. I saw you reply to Kwflanne and a few others a few hours ago but you ignored my comment.

As a Phillies fan I would have preferred Machado to Harper, based simply on the potential production on the field.

I also don’t believe Harper’s production will live up to the monetary value of the contract. His performance has been too volatile/variable, and I do not like his inconsistency year to year.

Yes, he is capable of a monster season, but that has only happened once in 7 years, so based on history, mathematically he has a 1 in 7 chance of repeating that.

The only mitigating factor in the signing is that the contract is lengthy, which lowers the AAV below what I expected. It’s still a big number, but it is unlikely to constrain the Phillies adding pieces around him in the years going forward.

I hope he lives up to the contract, but I have my concerns, If he repeats 2015 they will contend for the division,. If he repeats 2016, they’ll be in the middle of the pack somewhere.

The obvious team variables are that Herrera and Hernandez could both have bounce back years, Cutch ad Segura “should” add something, JTR should add something, and Hoskins could improve a bit. However, the Nats and Mets have really good SP, considerably better than the Phils IMO, and the Braves are not going away.

At this point I would favor the Nats to win the division, with the other 3 teams fighting it out for 2nd place and the WC. But it’s baseball, and anything can happen.

There’s 3 ways to value the contract:

      1) on field production

      2) merchandising

      3) gate and concession revenues

You know ticket sales (and correlating concessions/parking income) can’t help but increase in the short term from the signing.

Merchandising is tricky because of the mlbpa royalties shares, individual player royalties, etc, BUT, you know this also can’t help to go up – both from increased game traffic buying swag at the team stores in the ballpark, and general off the shelf stuff at retail outlets.

Then there’s non-monetary gain from performance on the field (assume we lump any potential postseason revenue into the ticket sales generally).

So, does he need to perform at an all star level all 13 years for the contract to be a “win”?

I say NO. Just so long as the total value over time evens out, the “bonus” value from other sources in early years may be even more valuable than any later year costs – not only due to inflation and tax limits rising, but, because that extra early “value” allows the team to do more things they otherwise wouldnt.

That depends on what he does up until the time he goes 0-4, and what he did to make the 4 outs.

If he’s slashing .330/.410/.550 at the time and drives in a couple of runs with groundouts, he won’t get booed.

Harper has played in Philadelphia 9 – 10 times per season for 7 years.

He knew what he is getting into when he signed the contract.

Well, if Harper is hitting 330 then his OBP is going to be closer to 500. Dude is a walk machine. I don’t think the pressure of playing in front of Philadelphia fans. is going to bother Harper too much. This is a guy who was on the cover of SI when he was, what, 16 years old? I mean, scouts knew about him when he was still in middle school.

He won’t be great for 13 years, of course, but the Phils are overpaying for the back end in order to get the prime years. Although Harper has had some injury concern, he takes good care of himself- his training regimen is pretty legendary, and he doesn’t drink or party or anything. I mean, it’s a different kind of player, but Rickey was kind of the same way – he always had these little problems with his hammies, but he was still a good major-league player well into his 40s because he knew his body really well and trained at an elite level.

At the start it’s roughly 26 million a year. It’s less towards the end of the contract. Phillies will be fine even if Harper is awful after year 6. The amount of money (and potential free agents) he’s bringing in is already paying for itself.

I think people keep seeing 13 and 330 and are in disbelief. That’s fair, but when you look at 26 million a year, it’s not really handicapping the Phils at all. Plenty of money to go around still.

Padres should start looking forward to new GM/President Theo Epstein in 2021. If Ricketts is setting the new norm, Theo will not stick around to work for an owner who won’t let him spend money. Theo is not in this game to spend his offseason making minor moves and internal changes. He’s in the game to do what it takes to win. Ricketts closing down the cash flow will prevent Theo from being Theo.

Theo loves San Diego, Law school and first baseball job there.. Pods just got Machado, who he loves. Your owners are willing to spend some cash. The challenge of building a third different team into a World Series champion could be irresistible.

Even if Strahm moves to the rotation, which I’m not convinced is a smart play, the Pads should have got an established starter to help take some of the heat off those young guys…Erlin should not be starting any games for a team that intends to make a run at the playoffs…. there’s been talk of interest in Stroman since Christmas, and they just need to pull the trigger…. even with Jankowski going down to injury, they still have a one too many corner outfielders and should use one as trade bait…. Send Renfroe and a couple stalled/blocked Canadians (Quantrill/Naylor) home, for a couple years of Stroman….. they get to keep all their prized prospects and get a solid, if unspectacular, young vet for the rotation.

Agree on the need for an established starter. Of all the young guys in contention right now, none has ever pitched more than 148 innings in a season. Paddack will be limited to 130 innings, Strahm around the same. .

However, I think Strahm might turn out to be an excellent starter. Four pitch mix (fastball, slider, change and curve). Aggressive. Smart.

Harper is hardly one of “games most marketable stars”. Yes, he will be embraced in Philadelphia but for long? If he had issues with fans in NY I can’t imagine he will react well when fans in philly turn on him. We all know it’s a matter of time until that happens. The rest of baseball will just continue to dislike him.

Philly fans are notorious for this of course but the boo-birds have come out in Dodger Stadium over the last few years. The crowd can get pretty surly when the bullpen gives up a solid late-inning lead or they leave the winning run on third with nobody out. Even Pedro Baez pacing around the mound for a minute pondering his next pitch can get the hometown crowd grumbling.

These are professionals who for the most part are giving their best effort. As former reliever Curtis Leskanic said: “I don’t boo you when you pick up my garbage”!

For those who feel harper isn’t worth the money the Phillies paid out to him:

He has already directly impacted the bottom line of the club this year by 10 million additional revenue in ticket sales. You can extrapolate that out over the next 5 years, and your basically lowering the contract to 13 years at 260 million. In addition, his jersey is sold out, on back order till at least June 1st.

He is already trending at costing them les than an AAV of 20 million.

At years 10-13, 20 mil is reasonable after all the winning beforehand. The team is pretty setup to make a run at the title for a good 5-6 year window. Will see, if Harper is cranking them out of CBP, he could be generating ticket sales on the back end of his career from chasing records

Bottom line, Philly And their baseball team will be doing just fine in 2031, no need to worry about us, haters. Worry about why your own team didn’t make a serious run at Harper.

Because his on field value isn’t worth it. He’s a mediocre player. A face of baseball, sure. But he’s nothing overly special, stat wise. Sure, he has POTENTIAL and Philly is hoping that he can somehow change and be the 2015 player year after year.

He’s not mediocre. He puts lots of runs on the board. He draws tons of walks and hits for huge power. He was sixth in baseball in times on base in 2018, despite it being a “down” year. He reached base more often than either of the MVPs, for example. He was also sixth in the NL runs created, behind only Yelich, Freeman, Arenado, Goldy and Carpenter. None of those guys is mediocre. Among active players, he’s sixth in career OBP and fifth in OPS. 13th in career slugging. He’s played 7 seasons and won’t hit age 27 until after 2019.. His defenseive stats in 2018 were poor, but he’s never been bad before; maybe there was an underlying issue there, but he won’t even be the worst defender on the Phillies, and with the DH coming to the NL I doubt they’re too worried about a one-year defensive blip.

In this revamped lineup, His OBP will play well. Also, I focus on team OPS, and has jumped significantly for this team. Harper is going to play up to the contract. Mack 83 is just a little bitter, which I can understand after the offseason that the NL East champs had … or lack of.
Relax Mack83, no need to hate, the NL East is going to be a close race this year. Good luck to your team/fanbase this year

I know he hit .249, but he also had 34 home runs (7th in the National League) 100 runs batted in (8th in the National League) 130 walks (1st in the National League and in baseball) a .393 on base percentage, a .496 slugging percentage, an .889 OPS, a 133 OPS+, 273 total bases, 34 doubles and 103 runs scored. Yeah, I would not say that is a mediocre player.

Strahm was fantastic out of the pen last year i see him as an opener or multi inning reliever. Our starting pitching this year should be alot better than what we had the last 3 seasons. A 6 man rotation or an opener day would be ideal to a guy like Paddack who will be on a innings limit.

I honestly think the Padres should use openers and a full-on bullpen strategy. Balsley and the front office seem to have a knack for turning forgotten pitchers into useful or dominant bullpen pieces – I mean, San Diego didn’t sign or develop Hand or Yates or Stammen or Strahm or Stock or….well, you get the picture. The Padres front office has obviously figured out some evaluations of relievers that is ahead of other teams, and I think they should extend that to on-field strategy. Just ignore starters and have a bunch of multi-inning relievers every game. I’m serious. It flies ij the face of baseball tradition and the old-school guys will hate it, but if it wins games then it’s a useful strategy.
