White Sox Outright Juan Minaya

By Steve Adams | March 15, 2019 at 1:03pm CDT

Right-hander Juan Minaya has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Charlotte by the White Sox, thus opening a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. The Athletic’s James Fegan tweets that Minaya’s velocity has dipped “noticeably” in recent outings, and the righty has struggled through a series of poor relief appearances this spring (11 runs in 4 2/3 innings). Beyond Minaya, the Sox also reassigned non-roster invitee Randall Delgado to minor league camp, ending the former D-backs right-hander’s bid to make the Opening Day roster.

Minaya, 28, has been a consistent presence in the White Sox’ bullpen over the past two seasons, pitching to a combined 3.89 earned run average while averaging 10.9 strikeouts and 4.9 walks per nine innings pitched. He briefly served as the team’s closer in 2017, tallying nine saves in that role, and has generally been a solid reliever for the Sox — albeit an erratic one in terms of control. Minaya averaged 95 mph on his heater last season and has posted an 11.5 percent swinging-strike rate across the past two years, though it seems some of that velocity has disappeared in camp.

Minaya’s subtraction from the 40-man roster doesn’t necessarily indicate that the White Sox are on the verge of any sort of signing. Veteran righty Ervin Santana, in camp with the White Sox on a minor league contract, is widely expected to claim a spot in the rotation and now has a clear path to be added to the roster. If that indeed plays out, he’ll reportedly earn a $4.3MM salary in 2019.

As for Delgado, the 29-year-old was a useful bullpen piece himself for the Diamondbacks from 2015-17 when he notched a 3.79 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 over the life of 209 2/3 innings. (He also mixed in six starts along the way.) A significant oblique strain wiped out more than half of his 2018 season, however, and he managed just 11 1/3 innings with more walks (six) than strikeouts (five) before being designated for assignment.

Can’t say I’m sorry to see Minaya go to the minors nobody claiming him off waivers says something. Best of luck but not with the Sox!

Not true. Newcomb still finished with a BB/9 of 4.5 and has no established secondary pitch. Plus not comparable when it’s a starter vs reliever.

Santana will end up being the best off season move by the Sox.

That’s an understatement. MLBTR just showcased the W Sox as having the worst rotation in the bigs, Santana will be their “ace”.

        Hey Bryzzo2016,

How much has Theo wasted on Darvish, Chatwood & Morrow just to name a few pitchers? Also, Heyward’s contract is horrendous. So yeah the over 120 million dollars owed this year to the Flubs pitching staff has some holes too!

Ironically Hamels gave up 5 ER’s in 3.2 innings against that sad W Sox team today. Lester BTW has an ERA over 9 in ST. But no worries the mlb did the Flubs some favors with an extremely friendly schedule to start the year. So you can pound your man boob chest even though that Cubs “dynasty” has same amount of championships as those lowly W Sox in recent memory!

Value vs quality are two different things, and even then the Cubs rotation will be better.

Thanks Captain Obvious! Or I should say the Cubs better be better since they have probably 90 million more invested in there pitchers just this year. This was an article about a below average bullpen guy for W Sox and some clown Cubs fan has to throw some digs in!

The White Sox, Boston is the Sox. The White Sox aren’t even relevant in Chicago, much less nationally. And YES! Since these W Sox trolls decided to keep pouncing on ANYTHING Cubs, I’ve decided to return the favor. A W Sox troll is hilarious in its own right, but to troll a team that literally owns the city your team plays in would be laughable if it wasn’t so pathetic.

There literally isn’t a single ML team that W Sox fans should be trolling, especially a team that’s made the playoffs 4 straight years (and counting) including 3 straight NLCS and a ring already in the bank, with a young PROVEN CHAMPIONSHIP core, not “prospects”. Meanwhile the W Sox couldn’t even get Machado to choose them over the F’n Padres?!?!? Not the Dodgers, not the Cubs or Yankees or even the Phillies…. but Manny deemed the Padres more relevant than the W Sox.

Yet their fanbase is compelled to troll?!?! Hahaha, now they get their medicine. And as long as Reinsdorf owns that team, that medicine will be on a continuous drip for years to come.

Bryzzo, hows the the weather in LA bruh? Did you become a cubs fan when you visited Chicago on your 15th birthday last year? Were you tall enough to ride the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier? You give all cubs fans a bad name. You’re about as Chicago as a turkey hotdog.

        • Bryzzo2016

The weather out here is great, a bit windy today, but not too bad. I actually did take the kids to the pier last summer and we did go on the ferris wheel. Actually going back in May for my next film. It will be good to be back home (after the winter of course) I appreciate ya asking though, that’s really sweet. As far as turkey hot dogs… ewww.. is that a thing? Whether it is or not, I still wouldn’t dare put ketchup on it. 😉 Keep your fellow W Sox trolls coming, the comedy is entertaining when I have a few minutes to kill.

The Clown Bryzzo speaks again! Let’s have some straight talk. The White Sox won exactly the same amount of playoff games as that very very high paid Cubs team last year 000000!!!
That’s a fact. No one else cares you’re sad and mad about White Sox fans trolling your beloved wittle Cubbies.

        • Bryzzo2016

Hahaha, talk about selective reasoning. Has it really gotten that bad for W Sox fans. What comes after being delusional?! Also, FACT, the W Sox had the same amount of alien space ships land on their field during the 7th inning of games when it was 73 degrees as the Cubs did…. ZERO. Hahaha, for your sake, I hope that ignorance truly is bliss.

Hahahaha, did this clown really bring up ST stats?!? Seriously? Hahaha, soooo I guess Eloy Jimenez is really a .073 hitter?!? Oh, these poor delusional W Sox fans. Lester, Hamels, Hendricks, Yu, Quintana…. yeah, I’ll gladly take that rotation. Yu looks 100% healthy, excited do him this year. Bringing up contracts? Really? Literally every team has at least one bad contract. Maybe not the W Sox anymore not that Shields is finally gone, but those poor saps can’t get anyone to take their money. Well, expect for Machado’s family and friends that no one else wanted. That was so nice of the Sox to employ Manny’s bum friends. I’m sure he appreciates that down in SD. Hahaha, W Sox trolls… really?!?

I don’t understand why you get so cranked up about the White Sox. You seem to troll as much or perhaps more than any one else . And while yes, recently the cubs have been quite good, stop acting as if they have some long tradition of success. You don’t have to convince me or any other White Sox fan that the team isn’t good right now but the cubs have rolled out their fair share of horrible seasons in the past as many teams have. I’m not a cubs fan but I feel no need to hate on them and was happy for them once they finally ended their championship drought. Besides, they only play a handful of games against each other so who cares. Maybe use more of your negative energy towards division rivals.

Worked up and laughing are VERY different things. And again, like most, it would be impossible for me to care less about the W Sox. Again, I thought it would be fair to return the favor to W Sox trolls(yeah, somehow that’s a thing) that pounce on anything Cubs. I know, it’s ridiculous for some of the fans of biggest joke of a franchise in sports to troll other fans, but that’s indeed the case.

Neither team has a long tradition of winning. Yet the white Sox fans made fun of the cubs for years. Now that it has turned around for the cubs the white Sox fans can’t handle it. It’s their own fault they were the ones that started this war. Which I never got since until the mid 90s these teams never played each other in a game that meant anything. Being born and raised in Chicago I saw this first hand. Heck the white Sox fans use to gloat they won the expedition cross town games more often. It is and always has been a pointless war

I don’t mind a good back and forth between the fan bases but Bryzzo is just flat-out sad. He literally posts over and over on every White Sox story with the same message. There’s a difference between fan base rivalry and obsession. He represents the latter.

        • Matthew Heywood

Like white Sox fans don’t do the same thing

        • Bryzzo2016

Bingo! That’s why I’m here. Until recently, like most baseball fans, I couldn’t possible care any less about the W Sox. That’s why up until recently, you won’t find any comments from me on their stuff. Inexplicably, fans of the most irrelevant team in baseball decided to troll anything Cubs. So, here I am. Don’t worry, eventually Reinsdorf will go away and MAYBE a new owner will shake things up and MAYBE the W Sox won’t be so pitiful… then I’ll go away. OR the W Sox fans constantly trolling everything Cubs will smarten up, find some shred of dignity and crawl back into their lil south side alley and STFU. My money is on the former.

Hey Bryzzo, bruh. Heard the 404 was jammmed today. May want to bike it today to your assistant production job for that sweet indie flick. Let me know next time you visit Chicago and I’ll hook you up with double decker bus tour tickets. Thanks for supporting Chicago tourism bruh!

Someone please give Bryzzo his Cubs PJs, his Cubs blankie and his Cubbie binky and tell him to take a wittle nap!!!

Is he bitter that the Rockies stunned them at “Wiggly” in the play-in game?
Is he bitter domestic abuser Russell got suspended?
Is he bitter Cubs got rid of hitting coach who helped them cheat (the one before Chili)? Oh I remember fans hyping up Chili and their bats flopped big time last year.
Is he bitter because Ricketts put handcuffs on Theo this offseason because he wasted hundreds of millions on so many previous signings (Heyward, Darvish, Morrow, Smyly, Chatwood, etc).

So sure tried to defend those facts! The Cubs should have accomplished so much more in past 3 years but the FACT once again is they’re trending in wrong direction. The have more money than 90-95% of mlb teams yet have little to show for it.

Good, no sense in blocking a better bullpen prospect just to keep this scrub on the roster. He had his moments, but those were few and far between. Now’s the time to see which of these bullpen prospects are worth keeping. One thing’s for sure, Minaya is not one of them.
