Pirates Sign Juan Minaya To Minor League Deal

The Pirates have added veteran right-hander Juan Minaya on a minor league deal, per John Dreker of Pirates Prospects.

Minaya, 32, appeared in six games for the Twins last season, tossing 9 2/3 innings of 5.59 ERA ball. Just a year prior he had been an effective member of the Twins’ bullpen, working to a 2.48 ERA over 40 innings. That 2021 season did include a sky-high 85.3% strand rate, so sustaining a mid-two ERA was never likely and it’s particularly telling that the Twins non-tendered him at the end of the season, and it wasn’t until March that he re-signed with them on a minor league deal for the 2022 season. That was just a small sample of work in Minnesota last year, and his peripherals didn’t deviate much between 2021-22 as he maintained an above-average strikeout rate and a below-average walk rate, although his fastball did see a slight drop in velocity last season.

With that being said, Minaya has a solid track record of relief work over his six seasons in the big leagues. Originally signed by the Astros out of the Dominican Republic back in 2008, Minaya made his debut for the White Sox as a 25-year-old in 2016. He’d turn in four years of service for Chicago, providing them with 128 1/3 innings of 3.93 ERA ball in that time.

While Minaya had a challenging 2022 season, there’s enough there that the veteran hurler could work his way into the Bucs’ bullpen plans with a strong spring training.

34 Players Become Free Agents

The Wild Card round of the 2022 postseason begins today, but for the majority of teams and players, the offseason is now underway. With that will come plenty of roster formalities, including veteran players who’ve been outrighted off their respective teams’ rosters reaching minor league free agency. This week, there have been 34 such instances throughout the league, per the transactions log at MiLB.com.

None of these are a surprise, to be clear. Any player who is not on his team’s 40-man roster at season’s end but has three-plus years of Major League service time, multiple career outright assignments and/or seven-plus seasons in the minors has the right to elect free agency. Everyone in today’s group of players falls under that umbrella. The majority of the group will likely find minor league deals over the winter, although a few of the players in question could potentially find a big league deal as a bench piece or middle-inning reliever.

There will be several more waves of players of this ilk, and we’ll make note of them in bunches over the coming weeks as we await the launch of Major League free agency, when all unsigned players with at least six years of Major League service time will reach the open market. For now, here’s the first of what will likely be several waves of newly minted minor league free agents:

Nationals, Juan Minaya Agree To Minor League Deal

The Nationals and righty Juan Minaya agreed to a minor league pact over the weekend, as first indicated by Rochester Red Wings director of communications Morrie Silver (Twitter link). He’s actually already made a pair of scoreless ppearances after quietly joining the organization. Minaya was passed through waivers by the Twins earlier this summer and accepted an outright at the time, in early July, but he was released back on Sept. 4.

Minaya, 32 next week, spent the first four seasons of his big league career (2016-19) with the White Sox organization and has been with the Twins since 2020. He gave Minnesota 40 sharp innings out of the bullpen in 2021, pitching to a 2.48 ERA with an above-average 25.8% walk rate but a bloated 12% walk rate as well. The Twins and other organizations were apparently somewhat skeptical of that performance, as Minaya was passed through outright waivers unclaimed last winter and returned to Minnesota on a minor league deal.

The 2022 season has been nightmarish for Minaya. The 6’4″ righty has pitched just 9 2/3 innings in the Majors, during which time he’s yielded six runs on eight hits and five walks with 11 strikeouts. Things actually went worse for Minaya with the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate in St. Paul, where he was clobbered for a 6.98 ERA with a 19.3% strikeout rate against a 10.7% walk rate while yielding an average of 1.35 homers per nine frames.

This year’s rocky showing notwithstanding, Minaya carries a 3.69 ERA in 178 big league innings. He’s averaged 94.7 mph on his heater — though that was down to 93.8 mph in 2022 — fanned just over a quarter of his opponents (25.2%) and walked batters at a 10.7% clip. If the Nats select Minaya to the big league roster before season’s end, he’d technically be controllable for several more years via arbitration, although given his struggles to this point in the season, that seems unlikely. Rather, the final stretch of games could serve as a minor league audition for the 2023 campaign, when a rebuilding Nats club will surely need plenty of veteran bullpen depth of this nature to vie for jobs next spring or to stash in the upper minors.

Outrights: Minaya, Bracho

We’ll start the morning off with a pair of outright assignments from around the league…

  • Twins righty Juan Minaya went unclaimed on outright waivers and has accepted an assignment to Triple-A St. Paul, tweets Dan Hayes of The Athletic. The 31-year-old Minaya has spent the past couple seasons in the Twins organization and was a solid member of their bullpen in 2021, pitching to a 2.48 ERA in 40 innings. A 12% walk rate and sky-high 83.5% left-on-base rate always made it unlikely that Minaya would sustain that level of output, however, and he’s struggled both in Triple-A and the Majors this year. Minaya carries a 5.91 ERA in 21 1/3 Triple-A frames this year and a 5.59 mark in 9 2/3 big league innings, though in his most recent Major League stint he did toss 3 1/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Minaya could have opted for free agency but seems comfortable in the Twins organization, as he’s now accepted multiple outrights there this season and returned on a minor league deal after being outrighted at the end of the 2021 season.
  • Right-hander Silvino Bracho went unclaimed on outright waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett, the Braves announced. The 29-year-old righty, who opened the season with the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate, has had an eventful week and a half. Selected to Boston’s big league roster on June 28, Bracho was designated for assignment two days later — before he ever appeared in a game. The Braves acquired him for cash that same night, and he tossed a shutout frame for Atlanta the very next day — just his second inning of big league work since 2018. Bracho was again designated for assignment just three days later, however, and as a player with more than three years of MLB service, he’ll now have the ability to reject this outright assignment if he wishes. Bracho saw frequent use in the D-backs’ bullpen from 2015-18 but also battled myriad injuries along the way and has made only two MLB appearances since. He’s had a nice season in Triple-A so far, logging a 3.16 ERA and a 36-to-4 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings with the WooSox.

Twins Outright Tyler Thornburg

TODAY: Thornburg has cleared waivers and been outrighted off Minnesota’s 40-man roster.  It isn’t yet known if he’ll accept the assignment to Triple-A or opt for free agency.

JULY 1: The Twins announced Friday that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Juan Minaya from Triple-A St. Paul and designated righty Tyler Thornburg for assignment to clear spot on the active and 40-man rosters.

Thornburg, 33, turned in four scoreless outings to start his Twins tenure, combining for eight innings in that time. He walked three hitters and recorded just four strikeouts during that span, however, and he was the latest Twins reliever to fail to put away the Guardians over the past couple weeks. Tasked with protecting a two-run lead while the Twins dealt with a depleted bullpen, Thornburg served up four runs (three earned) on two hits, a hit batter and three walks yesterday. Thornburg allowed the game to be tied in the eighth before yielding a walk-off home run to Andres Gimenez in the ninth — an incredible fifth blown lead for the Twins against the Guardians in eight games over the past two weeks.

The veteran Thornburg has totaled 19 innings between the Twins and Braves this season, pitching to a sound-looking 3.32 ERA that doesn’t mesh with far more concerning secondary numbers. Thornburg has walked a hefty 12.6% of his opponents, hit another and notched just a 16.2% strikeout rate. He’s also allowed just one home run despite a huge 50.8% fly-ball rate, and the resulting 3.2% homer-to-flyball ratio clocks in way shy of his career 10% mark. ERA alternatives like FIP (4.24) and SIERA (5.26) are far more bearish on his work thus far.

The Twins will have a week to trade Thornburg, pass him through outright waivers or release him. With six-plus years of MLB service, he can reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency in the event that he goes unclaimed.

Minaya, 31, will return for what will now be his fourth big league stint with the Twins in the past two seasons. He’s repeatedly ridden the DFA carousel in Minnesota, being selected to the roster, designated for assignment and accepting outright assignments on several occasions. Minaya posted a 2.48 ERA in 40 innings with the Twins in 2021, logging above-average strikeout and ground-ball rates along the way. He also walked 12% of his opponents, though, and he’s been torched both in the big leagues (six runs in 6 1/3 innings) and in Triple-A (5.91 ERA in 21 1/3 frames) so far in 2022.

The Twins are in obvious need of help to upgrade what has been an awful bullpen throughout the season, and that figures to be a key focus as the Aug. 2 trade deadline draws nearer. Rookie Jhoan Duran has been one of baseball’s best relievers, and converted starter Griffin Jax has emphatically secured a spot as well. The rest of the group has underwhelmed, to say the least, and the recent string of missed opportunities has kept the Twins from putting the Central largely out of reach. They currently hold a one-game lead over Cleveland.

Twins Designate Juan Minaya For Assignment

The Twins have designated right-hander Juan Minaya for assignment.  The move creates room for Trevor Megill to rejoin the active roster, as Megill was activated from the 15-day injured list.

Since first signing with Minnesota in the 2019-20 offseason, Minaya has now been designated four different times by the club, including another DFA just last month.  Minaya was outrighted off the 40-man roster on both occasions, and he again has the option to elect free agency, though there isn’t any indication that he won’t just accept another assignment to Triple-A.

Minaya’s first season with the Twins was a success, as he posted a 2.48 ERA and 53% walk rate over 40 relief innings.  Advanced metrics (such as a 4.00 SIERA) wasn’t as impressed with his work, however, and after the Twins non-tendered the righty, he had to settle for a minor league contract to return to Minnesota last winter.  Though Minaya has a 3.67 SIERA over 9 2/3 innings this year, his luck has seemingly gone in the other direction, as he has a 5.59 ERA over that short sample size.

Megill is back after being (retroactively) placed on the 15-day IL on June 16 due to a right shoulder impingement.  Now in his second big league season, Megill has done well thus far with the Twins, posting a 2.08 ERA over 13 innings out of the bullpen.

Twins Designate Juan Minaya For Assignment

The Twins designated right-hander Juan Minaya for assignment following last night’s game against the Yankees, tweets Dan Hayes of The Athletic. They’ll bring up a fresh arm for the bullpen today.

Minaya, 31, has spent the 2021-22 seasons with Minnesota. This marks his second DFA with the Twins, who also non-tendered him over the winter but ultimately re-signed him to a minor league deal. He accepted an outright assignment with the Twins a year ago to the date after clearing waivers, and the Twins will have a week to either trade him or attempt to pass him through waivers once more. As was the case last year, he’ll have the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency.

Minaya returned from his first DFA and outright in 2021 to solidify a spot in the Minnesota bullpen over the final few months. In 40 innings last year, the right-hander pitched to an excellent 2.48 ERA with an above-average 25.7% strikeout rate and a very strong 53% ground-ball rate. Those numbers were somewhat offset by an ugly 12% walk rate, but Minaya looked the part of a solid enough middle reliever.

The Twins still moved on via non-tender, or at least it seemed that way at the time. However, despite last year’s strong showing, Minaya didn’t find a big league offer following the lockout and returned to the Twins on another minor league pact. The Twins selected him to the big league roster late last month despite a rocky showing in Triple-A St. Paul (6.06 ERA, 16 strikeouts, eight walks in 16 1/3 innings), and those struggles have continued in the big leagues. He’s yielded six runs on six hits and five walks with seven strikeouts through 6 1/3 frames — and done so while averaging 94 mph on a fastball that sat at 95.3 mph in 2021.

Minaya is out of minor league options, so any team interested in picking him up would need to carry him on its big league roster.  In parts of six MLB seasons (four with the White Sox and two with the Twins), he’s totaled 174 2/3 innings and pitched to a 3.76 ERA with a 25.1% strikeout rate, an 11.9% walk rate and a 39.1% ground-ball rate.

Twins Place Danny Coulombe On 15-Day IL, Select Juan Minaya

The Twins placed left-hander Danny Coulombe on the 15-day injured list, while also optioning right-hander Yennier Cano to Triple-A.  In corresponding moves, the Twins called up left-hander Jovani Moran and selected the contract of veteran righty Juan Minaya.  (Minnesota had room on its 40-man roster, so no further moves were required to create space for Minaya.)

Coulombe heads back to the IL with the same left hip impingement that sidelined him back on May 11. The Twins only just activated Couloumbe from that previous IL stint yesterday, but he re-aggravated the injury in an appearance against the Royals. Playing on three separate minor leagues contracts with Minnesota over the last three seasons, Couloumbe has a 2.92 ERA over 49 1/3 big league innings with the Twins over the last three years.

Moran slides into Coulombe’s spot as a southpaw available out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball for the Twins earlier this season, but he has been an active piece of the Triple-A roster, covering 12 1/3 innings in 10 appearances with a 4.38 ERA and a 19-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Moran’s importance in the short-term can’t be understated, as he joins Caleb Thielbar as the only two lefties in the bullpen.

The 31-year-old Minaya spent four seasons with the White Sox, making 125 appearances out of the bullpen between 2016 and 2019. In that time, he pitched to a 3.93 ERA/4.18 FIP over 128 1/3 total innings. He did not pitch in 2020, but came back with the Twins last season to post a 2.48 ERA/3.97 FIP in 40 innings spanning 29 appearances. Minnesota non-tendered Minaya last fall but re-signed the right-hander to a minor league deal after the lockout.

Twins Re-Sign Juan Minaya To Minor League Deal

The Twins are re-signing reliever Juan Minaya on a minor league contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training, reports Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com (Twitter link). The righty made 29 appearances with Minnesota last season but hit free agency when the club non-tendered him in November.

Minaya put up a sterling 2.48 ERA in 40 innings last season. Still, the club declined to carry him on the 40-man roster over the winter. Minnesota clearly didn’t anticipate he’d repeat that kind of run prevention, which was propped up by an 85.3% strand rate and a .235 opponents’ batting average on balls in play. The Twins likely anticipate he’d perform somewhere nearer last season’s 4.00 SIERA moving forward.

Throughout his career, Minaya has struggled with control. He’s walked 11.7% of batters faced in parts of five big league seasons, and last year’s 12% mark fell right in line with that broader track record. Yet the 31-year-old also struck out a solid 25.7% of opponents and induced grounders on a huge 53% of balls in play against him. That was a massive spike relative to his early-career numbers, perhaps attributable to a drastic uptick in the usage of his changeup. Minaya went to the offspeed offering a career-high 45% of the time last season, per Brooks Baseball, and it induced grounders at an incredible 73% rate.

The Twins will bring Minaya back as a non-roster invitee, and he’ll try to pitch his way into the mix for a second consecutive season. Tyler Duffey, Jorge Alcalá and Cody Stashak look to be among the top right-handed setup options for manager Rocco Baldelli at the moment, although it’s possible the Twins add another arm on a guaranteed deal before Opening Day.

American League Non-Tenders: 11/30/21

The deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players has come and gone. The Tigers’ decision to non-tender Matthew Boyd — more on that here — represents the most prominent name cast into free agency tonight, but here’s a quick rundown of the rest of the non-tenders in the American League.

Onto the transactions…

  • Outfielder Tim Locastro was non-tendered by the Red Sox, the team announced. The speedy HBP-magnet was claimed off waivers from the Yankees earlier this month after an injury-marred season. He is likely to be an in-demand depth option for teams if his ACL tear recovery goes well.
  • The Rangers announced that outfielder Billy McKinney and catchers David Garcia and Yohel Pozo were non-tendered. Texas also assigned outfielder DJ Peters outright to Triple-A Salt Lake after he went unclaimed on waivers.
  • The Royals non-tendered lefty Richard Lovelady, per a club announcement. Lovelady underwent Tommy John surgery late in the 2021 season and is expected to be sidelined for the entirety of the 2022 season.
  • The Twins non-tendered right-hander Juan Minaya, left-hander Danny Coulombe and right-hander Trevor Megill, per a team announcement. Megill’s non-tender is particularly curious, as he was only just claimed off waivers a few hours ago and was not arbitration-eligible. Presumably, the team will try to quickly re-sign him to a minor league pact and bring him to Spring Training as a depth piece.
  • Infielder Phil Gosselin has been non-tendered by the Angels, per an announcement from the team. The journeyman saw a career-high 373 plate appearances in 2021, but is unlikely to challenge that number next year owing to below average offensive and defensive metrics.
