Cardinals Place Harrison Bader On 10-Day IL, Promote Lane Thomas

By Jeff Todd | April 17, 2019 at 10:46am CDT

The Cardinals announced an outfield roster switch this morning. Harrison Bader is headed to the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain while Lane Thomas will join the active MLB roster for the first time.

Bader’s placement is retroactive to April 14th, so he’ll be sidelined through at least the 23rd. There’s no indication to this point that he is dealing with a significant injury, but it was obviously enough of a tweak to require a dedicated period of rest. Bader, the club’s regular center fielder, joins fellow outfielder Tyler O’Neill on the shelf.

That combination of injuries has opened the door for Thomas. After a 2018 upper-minors power outburst, the 23-year-old was added to the 40-man roster last fall to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. He’s off to a .229/.383/.286 start through 47 plate appearances at Triple-A this season.

If the Cards get a lead late he should get some action in center. The Cards’ outfield defense is pretty weak right now, and with Wacha starting they will undoubtedly be tested. The pen is rested though. Lane’s power surge is even more impressive considering Memphis is a pitcher friendly park. Maybe he will be added by the Miller Park dimensions.

Memphis a pitcher friendly park? Maybe in the PCL but not really.

Lane’s power surge??? he is slugging .286 in AAA…
      Haha Cards fans…
look at Tatis Jr., Renfroe, Reyes, Myers for a real power surge.

That 4 game sweep of the Dodgers might be the highlight of your entire season.

We still have Ozuna who has real power in the OF, Fowler while not my favorite is capable. Jose Martinez is more than playable in RF with the bat.

The season is incredibly young. Thomas hit 27 last year in the minors. 21 at AA

Not sure you should be laughing. Your team has made the playoffs maybe 5 times in over 50 years. Zero rings.

Do you honestly believe the Padres will have a better record at year-end than the Cards?

It’s a good time in the season to try Wong hitting lead off for a whole series. Lead off is Wong’s dream slot. Move everyone down a slot and let Wong hit first.
    Wong
    Carpenter
    Goldschmidt
    DeJong
    Ozuna
    Molina
    Fowler
    Bader or Martinez or O’Neil
