Cardinals Select Rangel Ravelo’s Contract

By Mark Polishuk | June 17, 2019 at 12:06pm CDT

12:05pm: The move is now official. Righty Mike Mayers was moved to the 60-day IL to create 40-man space.

1:06am: The Cardinals are set to add minor league infielder Rangel Ravelo to their big league roster, The Athletic’s Robert Murray reports (Twitter link).  Ravelo’s contract should be selected prior to the Cards’ game with the Marlins on Monday night.  Yairo Munoz is headed to the paternity list, which will create a spot for Ravelo on the Cards’ 25-man roster, though a 40-man spot will still need to be created.

MLB.com doesn’t rank Ravelo as one of the Cardinals’ top 30 prospects, though the 27-year-old put up strong numbers during Spring Training this year, and then rebounded from an oblique injury to hit .333/.414/.543 with nine home runs over 249 PA for Triple-A Memphis.  Speaking to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last week, Cards president of baseball operations John Mozeliak cited Ravelo as “not a name I’d rule out” in regards to a promotion.

Ravelo has played mostly first base and left field in recent years, with some work as as right fielder as well.  Since Paul Goldschmidt has first base spoken for in St. Louis, Ravelo seems likely to step into the corner outfield mix, though he is something of an imperfect fit on a roster already overloaded with right-handed bats.  Of course, this assumes that Ravelo will be up in the majors for anything beyond a cup of coffee, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that Jedd Gyorko is expected back from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday.  Ravelo could very well find himself back in Memphis in 24 hours’ time, without having officially made his Major League debut.

A sixth-round pick for the White Sox in the 2010 draft, Ravelo has consistently hit for high averages and shown a lot of on-base skills in amassing a .301/.372/.444 slash line over 3383 career plate appearances in the minors.  After spending his first five pro seasons in Chicago’s farm system, he was part of a notable trade in December 2014, going along with Marcus Semien, Josh Phegley and Chris Bassitt to the Athletics in exchange for Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa.  Ravelo originally came to the Cards on a minors contract in April 2017.

Nice worthless response. Mozeliak has no rhyme or reason to his call ups. This guy has nowhere to play, so once again, they will use another player and try to shove him into a position he can’t play. Irrelevant? Look in the mirror.

He’s a bench bat. Munoz is on paternity leave and as soon as he gets back, Ravelo goes back to Memphis. You really should pay attention.

I would suggest he is being showcased, no room for playing time on the Cards’ major league roster, but one game where it is doubtful he gets an AB isn’t much exposure. Not sure who needs a right-handed hitting first baseman, but the guy can hit, and he is accomplished defensively at first too. Not sure about his outfield D, my guess is just OK. Well, welcome to the Bigs Rangel Ravelo, you have an awesome name.

Another uniformed comment. There’s no such thing as showcasing a player. Teams have scouts everywhere. They all know who this guy is and what his potential is. He’s 27 years old. It’s no secret to what his ability is. Quit listening to media talking heads who have no clue. I’ve been involved in the game for 20 years. Showcasing is not a word anyone uses in the league. It’s a made up word by the media, like the worthless term, “clubhouse chemistry”.

Probably correct about the “showcasing” term. However, my 52 years experience dwarfs yours. Somehow your vast knowledge fails to appreciate DeJong which goes a long way in explaining your lack of judgement. Ravelo deserves the call-up, even if it is only for a day. I guarantee you it is meaningful to him.

And since you brought up Dejong from days ago and put him a Ravelo story, this is one big reason Dejong is a YAWN. When it matters, where is he? 2 outs w/RISP, .158 BA.
RISP, .196. Any man on base, .254. But he sure can hit with bases empty. .303. Good for him. He’s right in line with the other members of this inept offense.

Regarding the “showcase,” one should always remember that no matter how much one assesses a player’s value the proof is in the Big League pudding. Plenty of players have been can’t misses, that missed.

You’re a real piece of work Nick. Comparing playing in the minors to playing in the majors has no real comparison and some players flourish in a different atmosphere. Teams showcase players all the time still.. GM’s just don’t announce it. I know that would make it easier for you to understand. In Reality, he is a bench bat for a few days and gets to say he made to the show, but I guess you feel better trying to talk down to people who have different thoughts than you. You try to establish your opinion as fact and anyone’s opinion as being uniformed. If you have been in this league for 20 yrs, which I doubt, you have learned absolutely nothing.

I have sources all over the states. Scouts, former players and front office personnel. I would never reveal their names. That’s how I get the information. They trust me. Do I care if you believe me? NO! But nothing I print is false. You don’t like it because it’s truth and doesn’t fit with what you are told by the media. They are most uninformed people in the world. Hell, Angels fans think they have a shot at the playoffs because their offense is good. They haven’t figured out that pitching and defense wins. Poor Mike Trout is wasting away out there. It’s unfortunate he can’t be a spotlight in the playoffs.

No Nick. You are stating your opinion without any evidence to support your biased opinions. Stating you are deep in with all these people doesn’t mean what you preach is correct. Numerous people including myself that frequent this site are smart enough to formulate our own opinion about the likes of Ravelo’s call up. But you disparage Mo and bring up nonsense about how it doesn’t make sense. I asked you a logical question of who else would you prefer that you want to lose a weekend of ab’s in Memphis? No reply. Your posts are filled with biased opinions like your thoughts on the Angles.. An intelligent poster focuses on facts, like if your philosophy on pitching and defense is perfect then how do the reds have the 3rd best team era and 6th best fielding percentage but are 6 games under .500. So there are exceptions to the fact. Blues were in last place on Jan 3rd, won the cup. Angels are 3.5 games out with 89 games to play, things can change. Listen you can hate all you want that is your prerogative, but don’t try to spew this nonsense as fact and that you are some big shot.

A player can be moved to the 60 IL even though they might be back ready soon. The 60 IL just means 60 days from the time of placement on the IL. Not 60 days from the point of movement from to 10 to 60.

I am an Edman fan but Wong still plays. He is signed long term, his defense is superb, he has really progressed in his base-stealing, and is improving offensively. Yes, he can be frustrating, watching him flail at the plate, but if others in the lineup were pulling their weight then his numbers would play.

Just another reminder of how overmatched Rick Hahn is as GM. Not only did he massively overpay for a 1 year rent of Samardzija, his team off of 73 wins had no real need for Samardzija. Then he refused to trade him at the trade deadline. And then with the comp pick, he drafted relief pitcher.
