Dodgers Sign Zac Rosscup To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | June 12, 2019 at 3:47pm CDT

The Dodgers have signed left-hander Zac Rosscup to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City, per an announcement from Triple-A director of communications Alex Freedman (Twitter link). He’ll be active for tonight’s game.

Rosscup, who turned 31 this week, spent the 2018 season in the Dodgers organization and pitched 11 1/3 innings at the big league level. While he posted an unsightly 4.76 ERA in that time, Rosscup also racked up 20 strikeouts against just four walks. He’s split the 2019 season between the Mariners and Blue Jays thus far, showing similarly impressive strikeout capabilities but an alarming jump in walk rate (22-to-16 K/BB ratio in 15 innings).

Rosscup’s knack for missing bats and the huge swinging-strike rate he generates on his slider are tantalizing characteristics, but he’s been too prone to walks and home runs to find sustained success at the MLB level yet. He’ll vie for another shot in what has been a problematic Dodgers’ bullpen of late and could well get that opportunity if he pitches well in OKC, as both Scott Alexander and Tony Cingrani on the Major League injured list. Los Angeles currently has Julio Urias and Caleb Ferguson as southpaws in the ’pen, but Ferguson has struggled quite a bit in his 18 1/3 innings this year.

Not a bad signing by any means. Rosscup was decent last year with the Dodgers.

If he cant just get LHP out there would be a role for him. Thats how bad this pen is at the moment.

His splits against RHP must be off the charts 🙂

Not good enough to stick with the Cubs, not good enough to stick with the Rockies, not good enough to stick with the Mariners, not good enough to stick with the Jays, and not good enough to stick with the Dodgers the first time around. How do we curb our enthusiasm?

I mean really guys need to throw at AAA, and they need more than one healthy LHP. Not sure to be excited or read anything more into it than that.

I read nothing into it, and that’s the problem. They have only Urias and Ferguson as LH relief options. Of them, one isn’t going to be used situationally and the other was totally stinko last time he was up. So no they don’t need guys to throw at triple-A they need them to throw at the show and they needed it yesterday. It’s a four-alarm blaze and we’re getting a seltzer bottle.

The Dodgers’ pen reminds me of the Nats’ pen a couple years ago. The team had a solid first half despite a complete mess of a bullpen. They waited until the deadline to bring in 3 solid relievers, and I absolutely think that’s exactly what LAD will have to do. The FO can hope all they want that these guys figure it out, but I’m seeing no evidence of improvement from that bunch over the past month. Gonna need AT LEAST 2 solid relievers on board in July – preferably 3. This problem isn’t gonna solve itself unfortunately.

Yep. I’ve been saying this since before the start of the season. That’s when this problem should have been addressed.

And still he’s not much of a drop from what they have now. Remember he was with the team in the past. As Friedman is a slave to analytics there is a recent item about how LA pen is not good a striking out hitters. This guy seems to curb that problem, but not really.

FO simply won’t buckle down and strengthen the pen smh. I’d hate to have to start feeling sorry for you.

Why would we feel sorry, especially knowing you’re about to set a new record of post season futility. You’ve lost 6 consecutive chances at a title and our trophies don’t even need to be polished yet. You realize that pretty soon, Dodger fans who were alive when your team last won the WS are soon to be rarer than WW2 vets!! Nah, I think I’ll worry about your team for you.
