Brewers To Call Up Travis Shaw

By Mark Polishuk | July 25, 2019 at 4:10pm CDT

The Brewers will call infielder Travis Shaw up from Triple-A prior to tomorrow’s game, The Athletic’s Robert Murray and Ken Rosenthal report (Twitter link).  Shaw will take the 25-man roster spot left open by Jhoulys Chacin’s placement on the 10-day injured list.

Shaw was demoted on June 27, but has since shredded Triple-A pitching to the tune of a .316/.494/.754 slash line and eight home runs over only 77 plate appearances.  While the Pacific Coast League is notoriously hitter-friendly, Shaw’s breakout provides some hope that he has gotten on track after a dreadful beginning to the 2019 season.  Shaw hit just .164/.278/.290 with six homers over 212 PA for the Brewers, though his performance could have been hampered by a wrist injury that cost him roughly three weeks on the injured list.

While Shaw may be back in the majors, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be back in an everyday role.  The Brewers are likely to stick with Keston Hiura at second base as long as the prized rookie’s bat stays hot, and Shaw obviously isn’t supplanting Mike Moustakas at third.  This could leave first base as Shaw’s best option for playing time, though Eric Thames (another left-handed bat) is hitting well in part-time duty alongside struggling right-handed hitter Jesus Aguilar.

Milwaukee could also simply use Shaw in several places around the diamond, seeing time at first, second, and third base spelling the regulars or being a late-game replacement.  With the trade deadline also looming on July 31, the Brewers could also be looking to shop Shaw (or Thames or Aguilar) to any interested parties, as pitching seems like a much bigger need for the Brew Crew than infield depth.

More than enough to pass the lowly Cubbies.

Those of us (Brewers fans) with any intelligence take the Cubs very seriously. They have a good team and always play the Brewers tough. Shaw does not move the needle for me in the slightest. I don’t expect him to be in a Brewers jersey for very long.

does not matter if the cubs are playing terrible coming in, they always seem to turn it up a notch when at Miller Park. Same when the Brewers go to Wrigley. Gonna be a fun series thats for sure.

Shaw is under control, Moose isn’t. Sterns doesn’t believe in throwing the future away for one wildcard game. He will want to see if Shaw can regain the form from the last two years or if the league has figured him out for good. With his low budget payroll Sterns is a big believer in controllable years.

Shaw has been hitting well lately too. Maybe he will continue to find his stroke?!

          Enjoy.

Despite history, I wish the series was in Milwaukee this weekend.

Cubs seem to have trouble winning on the road.

Where’s he gonna play? Not in place of Huira or Moose, I hope. (And he doesn’t play shortstop.) Showcase him briefly and then package him as part of a trade?

Aguilar could very well be on his way out (TB Rays maybe?). Shaw and Moose can both play first base

Thames is the left handed half of the 1b platoon and is in the last year of his contract. Jesus Aguilar is controlled for quite a while and Sterns would be selling at a low point. Shaw would have to play firstbase to get regular at bats.
I’ve heard no rumours about Thames but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Brewers are dangling him along with Arcia in their search for pitching.

Well here is the deal they wont need a starter for five days so that gave them a chance to utilize a bat or relief arm for those days. They chose a bat obviously. Now as far as that fifth day they will need a starter. The team will obviously change with trades by then. They need to find atleast 2 starters in that time along with trying to clarify their players who will be coming up for the availability to the rule 5 draft. So I gotta believe there will also try to make some minor trades of guys not in future plans that are on 40 man roster. Now I do have a question players not on the 40 man can they still be allowed to be traded after the trade deadline? I hope Brewers dont try to use a reliever as a starter in five days cause that just compounds things more. Time to just leave them set as far as Houser, Guerra , and Peralta. Probably better off just using Derby, Brown or Supak . Simply because it seems any decent pitchers such as those three succeed until the league adjusts to them which is better then what they got up right now.

Mr. Polishuk. You state that “Eric Thames (another left-handed bat) is hitting well in part-time duty alongside struggling right-handed hitter Jesus Aguilar.”. According to the Brewer website Thames is averaging .253 in the last 30 days while Aguilar is averaging .316. In the future you will need to do more research before writing your blog.

I really hope this is a joke, if not I’d definitely suggest doing a little more research b4 writing your post.
      Thames ops .862
      Aguilar ops .707
That took me less then 30 sec to pull up.
