Mets Notes: Trades, Nimmo, O’Rourke

By Mark Polishuk | July 18, 2019 at 8:25pm CDT

The latest on the Mets….

  • The Mets entered the day with a 44-51 record, they’re still only five games out of a wild card spot in the congested National League.  With this in mind, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman suggests that if the team isn’t going to really blow things up by dealing Noah Syndergaard or Jacob deGrom, they might as well hang onto other veteran trade chips like Zack Wheeler, Todd Frazier, and Jason Vargas (none of whom are likely to generate much in the way of a return at the deadline, with Wheeler’s value in question due to injury) to try and contend down the stretch.  With so much parity in the NL, “why not just play this out, rather than performing a fan-angering salary dump for minimal prospect return?” Sherman asks.
  • Brandon Nimmo is able to resume some baseball activities after the Mets shut him down last month, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports (Twitter link).  While Nimmo probably won’t start a rehab assignment “until August at the earliest,” it’s still a positive step forward given that Nimmo has been suffering from a bulging cervical disc in his neck.  It would seem like there’s at least some chance Nimmo gets back onto the field this season, though the Mets will obviously be careful with the outfielder given the delicate nature of the injury.
  • Ryan O’Rourke was designated for assignment by the Mets in late June, and learned about the move in unfortunate fashion, Syracuse.com’s Lindsay Kramer writes.  O’Rourke wasn’t told about the transaction by a coach or staff member, but rather via Twitter after a teammate showed him the news prior to a game.  The left-hander ended up remaining in the organization at Triple-A Syracuse after being outrighted off the 40-man roster in late June, though O’Rourke took advantage of his brief hiatus in a unique manner.  He ended up playing for Team Ireland in the qualifying rounds of the 2019 European Baseball Championship, appearing in two games for his grandfather’s home country.   “I was so happy. It was one of the better experiences in baseball of my entire life….I’m not representing myself, I’m representing my parents, my grandparents. I’m representing a country. I’ve never represented a country before when I played so it was really cool,” O’Rourke said.

sherman is a fool if he thinks the Mets have a shard of a chance in the Wild Card. better just deal those rentals and try again next year if they so choose.

They need to have a fire sale. They already have 108million committed next year without one free agent or re-signing Thor, Conforto and Diaz.

Bonilla is getting paid now because the Mets needed financial flexibility back then. It was a good move for the Mets. They had a contractual obligation, so they deferred some of his salary to ease cash flow issues. If someone owed you money, you wouldn’t say to forget it, that you wouldn’t mind giving up what you are owed, would you? Maybe you should study finance before making such comments.

Is everyone going to hear you complain about Scherzer’s deferred money until 2029? He is under contract to pitch for 7 years, but gets paid for 14 years ($15M/yr). blogs.fangraphs.com/max-scherzer-and-when-210-mill…

The Mets have a projected payroll of $184 million in 2020 if they pick up the option on Vargas and make no other changes. $20 million more than they have ever spent before. Does anyone really think the Wilpons will let that ride?

According to Sportrac they have $129 million already committed for next year and that includes deferred and retained. Doesn’t include arbitration players. I doubt that’ll bring them to $184 million lol

I wish more teams would take this approach. You never know how thing will play out. Playoff odds are against them.

Shocker- the Mets staff didn’t tell the player he was DFA’d. All bias aside, they are a complete dumpster fire of an organization and won’t find success until there’s a significant change at the top.

figures O’Rourke is the one guy they didnt give a chance. actually has talent unlike Gagnon, Rhame, Mazza, and just about every pitcher they have in AAA.

PS-why don’t you worry about your team rather than a team

If you look at the Mets schedule coming up it is the complete opposite of the twenty some odd games leading to the all star break. They don’t face a winning team in multiple series. Not saying the Mets are a playoff team but they can definitely make some noise if they take advantage of an extremely week couple of weeks coming up.

As a Mets fan I would make 2 trades at the deadline and 3 trades in the offseason
Trade 1 @the deadline Thor’s last 2 starts were great Thor to the Astros for Tucker,Whitley and a RP.
Trade 2 @ deadline Wheeler to Milwaukee for Corey Ray and Jeffress

Trade 1 in the offseason. Nimmo,Lagares and Matz to Cleveland for Bauer.
Trade 2 in the offseason the Giants need some power how about Cespedes to the Giants for Cueto and a rp that’s not traded at the deadline.
Trade 3 Dom Smith,Familia and $10 mil to offset the $$ to Detroit for Greene.
Mets 2020 rotation: deGrom, Bauer,Cueto,Kay and Whitley
Lineup: Ray,Mcneil,Cano,Alonso,Tucker,JD Davis(Lowrie),Ramos and Rosario. Conforto switches out as the 4th OF
The BP gets a facelift with Greene,Jeffress,Houston RP and SF RP a lefty.

Why would the Brewers trade Jeffress when they already are having bullpen depth issues?

I see Happy Hour started early in NY.

Clearly the poster of those trades thinks that all of those other teams are in the business of making the Mets better instead of making themselves better. They must’ve gotten together and said, “Let’s make the Mets better by making trades that will get all of our front office personnel fired, and our local media and fans torching our offices.”

Why don’t you just trade the whole team but the ones that should be???? !!!! This is the worst post I’ve ever read about trades. Ramos, Cano, Vargas and Rosario should be traded Ramos is to old Cano sucks and is paid way to much use that money to get someone good. Vargas is Vargas and Rosario sucks. Resign wheeler put McNeil at 2B and shop for shortstop and center fielder that’s good. Nido isn’t a good enough hitter to start so shop or trade for 1.

You don’t trade a player with control for more than one season at the deadline. You trade them in the off-season when more teams can plan around a move like that. You’ll also have more time to go back and forth to try and get a better deal

If Mets make any deal it should be for major league level or mlb ready with team control through 2020 or further.

A bullpen arm or 2 like green from Detroit would be a huge help

    Sp depth

    True everyday centerfield starling marte?

    True shortstop.
