Padres To Promote Adrian Morejon

By Connor Byrne | July 19, 2019 at 10:51pm CDT

The Padres will promote Double-A left-hander Adrian Morejon to the majors Saturday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. The club’s 40-man roster is full, so it will need to make a corresponding move to clear a spot for Morejon.

Now 20, Morejon is three years removed from joining the Padres for a whopping $11MM bonus as an international free agent out of Cuba. Morejon has been somewhat injury plagued since signing that deal, ESPN’s Keith Law recently noted (subscription required), yet he’s still considered one of the game’s most exciting farmhands. Both Baseball America (No. 46) and MLB.com (No. 49) rank Morejon among the majors’ 50 best prospects. In their free scouting report, Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com laud Morejon’s arsenal – which includes a mid- to high-90s fastball, two above-average kinds of changeups and a curveball – and add he could become a mid-rotation starter or better in the majors.

Morejon will work out of the bullpen in his first major league action, according to Lin, as he’s not stretched out to start in the bigs at this juncture. He has combined for just 36 innings in 16 appearances this year at the Double-A level, where he has posted a 4.25 ERA/3.69 FIP with 11.0 K/9, 3.75 BB/9 and a 50.6 percent groundball rate.

Morejon’s presence will give the slumping Padres a second lefty reliever to join Matt Strahm in a righty-heavy relief setup. In the event he stays up through the season, Morejon will accrue 71 days of service time.

Why is it stupid? See what he’s got. We have plenty of people that will be cut or traded before the Rule V, so its not a problem. Plus I think there are only 2 or 3 people worthy of being protected anyway.

It’s stupid because the Padres have like a half dozen players who have to be reinstated from the 60-day IL this offsason and like 10 guys who they will be at risk of losing to Rule 5. They need to clear space for all those guys before they can even think of giving roster space to Morejon and now Baez.

Ryan, hasn’t Preller and the Padres shown you clearly through calling up Paddack and Tatis to start this season and Margot last season that they are not really concerned with those types of things.

They are more interested in winning and Morejon is talented. They wan’t to see what he has close up. If he can help them win one more game this season then its worth it to them.

        Oh hi Koamalu.

Last year everyone they called up in the second half was going to be Rule 5 eligible in the offseason (or already on the 40-man roster). There were a lot of people hankering for Quantrill and Allen to get called up. They weren’t, but Jacob Nix and Brett Kennedy were despite not being as good of prospects. Why? Rule 5 eligibility. They broke with that thinking here, however.

No, one extra win will not be worth losing Ronald Bolaños or David Bednar to the Rule 5 draft.

Lastly, Margot was called up 2 seasons ago (3 if you count his cup of coffee in 2016), not last offseason.

Ryan, as usual you are wrong. Nix and Kennedy were pitching well in AAA in August and Quantrill had just gotten the call up from AA and was struggling.

Every extra win is money in the bank in future ticket sales, sponsorships and other revenue and a wild card game is worth $10-$11 million, so its much more valuable than either Bolanos or Bednar. They can buy a proven vet with that money instead of hoping that marginal prospects beat the odds and somehow become MLB players.

As usual you miss the point. Margot was called up even though it cost the team service time and he was not Rule 5 eligible. Time and time again the Padres and other teams do things you think are wrong, but they consistently are doing them. Have you ever thought that its you that doesn’t understand how baseball works? Not likely because you know everything and Preller is just an Ivy League educated idiot to you.

So what is it like having two accounts? More to the point, how does it feel to have your accounts banned so often? When are you going to get a life and a job?

Wrong again Koamalu. At least you’re consistent.

Quantrill had a 3.48 ERA in AAA (hitter’s park) as of September 2nd, 2018. And you forgot (or more likely because it’s you, conveniently ignored), Logan Allen.

You said one extra win was worth losing Bolaños or Bednar. You don’t get to move the goalposts. It’ll take more than one extra win to make the Wild Card game at this point. I know that losing the Wild Card game technically counts as making the postseason, but I don’t see it that way.

Margot was already protected from the Rule 5 draft the offseason before he got called up. It takes less than a minute to look at the Padres’ transaction pages or his Wiki page (both available for free on the internet) to see this. How stupid do you have to be to miss this yet say that I was wrong about it?

All I did was give my opinion on what they should do and make an educated guess as to what they might do based on how they operated last year (every prospect they called up being Rule 5 eligible despite them having better prospects at those positions who were not Rule 5 eligible).

What is it like having a dozen accounts? And using them to comment on the same article? You need to move out of mommy’s basement and stop spending your life bothering people on here and Friarhood before you starting accusing others of not having lives or jobs.

Nix was called up Aug 10th. Quantrill was in AA then and he had a 5.15 ERA in an extreme pitchers park.

Again you bring up something in Allen that has no bearing. Another straw man by you to cover up your being wrong again.

Come on Ryan. You are supposed to be a Insurance Actuarial. Math and facts should be your strong suit.

I am only going to be here another week to point out your fallacies. At least try to get stuff like this correct.

Quantrill had a 3.48 ERA in AAA playing his home games in an extreme hitter’s park at the end of the AAA season. Many fans wanted him called up. He wasn’t. Several guys who weren’t ranked as highly as him were. Why do you think that is?

Yes, it’s easier to just refer to arguments that you can’t refute as “straw men.” Funny that you still don’t know how to use that term correctly.

There is no such thing as an “insurance actuarial.”

You are going to be here forever. Everyone knows you just live by your computer telling people on the internet that they’re wrong and you’re right all day. And then break out your alts to “gang up on them” if they disagree.

Quantrill had a 5.15 ERA when Nix was called up. He has only pitched for San Antonio so far that season. At least look it up. It just makes you look worse when you don’t.

Why do you think its necessary to lie and to use straw man fallacies? .

Its an insurance ACTUARY. Its insurance actuarial tables. Ok, I got that one wrong. Whatever it is, you were obviously not able to get a job doing it.

And a 3.48 ERA when the AAA season ended. I did look it up. The point is that the Rule 5 draft definitely had something to do with him and Allen not getting September callups last year. I mean, they called up Brett Kennedy, an unranked minor leaguer coming off a career year.

For the same reason you feel the need to comment using multiple accounts

Yet another thing you were wrong about.

You don’t know what type of job I do or don’t have and frankly, I don’t have to validate myself to you. You’ll believe what you want either way.

Boyd is going to stay a Tiger. Mostly because his ERA is now 4.13 and he has pitched to a 6.04 ERA since the start of June. In a “what have you done for me lately” industry, Boyd has performed poorly the past 2 months.

Morejon has been opening games every fifth day, not coming out of the bullpen at the end of games. That said, he has only been going 2 innings.

If you watched the futures game you saw a kid that throws one of the most effortless 98 mph FB I have ever seen and the movement is incredible. He also has 3 other pitches that project as plus in the majors.

He is going to be a good one if they can stretch him out next season and he stays healthy.

Can you explain why you think the Padres should trade for Boyd who now has a 4.13 ERA and is sinking quick?

Why should they trade for Bauer, who is a FA after next season and has said he will go all the way to an arbitration hearing and will earn $20 million?

I would think the Padres have better options than either of those two.

I’m with PF on this one. Matt Boyd has literally two good months in the majors in his career.

Although in Bauer’s case I think it’s the Indians who say no to trading him because they are actually contending.

You are right about that Ryan. As far as I can see in his stats, Boyd has been a great only in April and May this season. He was pretty mediocre the rest of the time.

But this is the first time in weeks that I can been on, so not sure why you would be addressing me in your post.

The Indians may not be shopping Bauer, but the Padres are not looking for that type of starter either. They have been really clear that they want long term control. That the Padres are looking for players that can help them win for several years, not just for one and Bauer is a FA after 2020.

Ryan, Bauer being a free agent after 2020 matters because the Padres have said over and over and over that they are not interested in just winning in 2019 and 2020. They keep saying and acting like a team that wants to win long term.

Bauer is short term. Bauer is a guy that has clearly stated that he will go all the way to an arbitration hearing instead of signing in order to wring the very most dollars from the team and has said will absolutely will not sign an extension because he believes he can make more money in FA. He is a jerk of epic proportions. Winning does not matter to him. Money does. That is not the only reason not to trade for him, but it is in the minds of GMs.

Preller is not trading for Bauer because he has made it clear that he only wants pitchers with long term control.

You can keep deflecting from the fact that you have multiple accounts Ryan, but we all know who you are and we all easily recognize your other accounts. It took me one thread to spot you and your other account when I came back after months of being away. So keep on trying to deflect Ryan. It won’t help you.

If that is the case (and I never said it isn’t) then they should trade Kirby Yates (which you are staunchly against them doing).

“Bauer is short term. If you think the team can win in 2020 what do you care if Bauer leaves after the season? He would still have at least some value to the team. But not necessarily the value that Cleveland is asking for.

“Preller is not trading for Bauer because he has made it clear that he only wants pitchers with long term control.”

          So… not Kirby Yates?

The irony here is precious. Everyone sees you using multiple accounts, even going as far as to use them ON THE SAME THREAD. You haven’t been away for any amount of time. You have been commenting on Koamalu. The “Pinche Verde” thing, copying a post from your websoulsurfer blog word for word and casually calling me “Ryan” in a comment were the dead giveaways. They’re trying to salvage the season.
Making a couple internal moves instead of none…and instead of making trades that could come back and bite them if they miss the playoffs.

Agree. I don’t think this has to be a sign of an impending trade. The team is struggling. Tatis is struggling. Kinsler has been horrid. Urias up to play second and spell Tatis at short as opposed to moving Manny off of third and creating another hole is more what I perceive the move to display. Morejon is a great young arm to take a look at. They know the expectation is to win next year and so with as bad as things have gotten it is time to see what they have in him at the highest level…if a shakeup gets them back closer to .500, great – but it also has purpose building toward next year.

They need to do something the team looks terrible, their not focused and even Tatis is losing games for them with his errors. SOmething is not right.
I’d rest Tatis for now, dfa Kinsler and bring up a few rooks.

Are you saying if the Padres miss the playoffs, please not a chance they’ll be close to the wild card, we really need two good SP’s Bauer and Boyd would be a good start.

Boyd has a 4.13 ERA right now and an ERA above 6 since the beginning of June. Why would the Padres give up any prospects to get a pitcher that is no better than the guy he would replace in their rotation?

I see at least five players traded before July 31 st this team needs to be shaken up and some new faces need to come in. I see no intensity over the last two weeks.. I’d like to dump Myers he worth less give him away and pay half his salary. kinsler, Weingeter, Renfore or Reyes, Stock, etc. move these guys out now there’s others for sure.

This move all but assures they have ended his development as a starter. Not really shocked. His stuff is good, but lack of command, poor flexibility, and a dumpy body at 20 don’t bode well for long term success as a starter. Hopefully he will thrive as a key bullpen piece.

He is starting the game tomorrow. He will only go 2 innings. From what Andy Green said, they are going to treat him like a starter and use him every 5 days. Same thing he did in Amarillo since the injury earlier this season.

I’d like to see them piggyback Morejon and Baez
Each could benefit from time in MLB and only going thru a lineup once.

Do you think they will continue to piggyback him with Quantrill? That worked out well.
