Rays Rumors: Trade Deadline, Jimenez

By Steve Adams | July 8, 2019 at 11:58am CDT

After dropping a pair of games against the Yankees to open their four-game series this past weekend, the Rays rallied to win a pair of one-run games and avoid falling further back in the division than the 6.5 games they trailed as of last Thursday. That pair of wins could prove to be pivotal, as Tampa Bay general manager Erik Neander recently acknowledged that his team’s level of aggression at the trade deadline will directly correlate with their proximity to the division lead.

“I think we’re likely to be the most aggressive the more that the division is in play,” Neander told Juan Toribio of MLB.com. “…Our standing within the division will probably dictate how aggressive we’ll look to be.”

The Rays come out of the break with four games against the Orioles in a three-day span. Over that same stretch, the Yankees will play three games in Toronto. Following that opening series for both teams, an even more critical four-game series between the Rays and Yankees will take place in the Bronx. At the conclusion of that series, fewer than two weeks will remain until the July 31 trad deadline.

As for the Rays’ current direction, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times wrote this weekend that he anticipates a measured approach rather than aggressive pursuits of high-end assets like Giants closer Will Smith or Padres closer Kirby Yates. The Rays, for instance, are currently more interested in Tigers setup man Joe Jimenez than they are closer Shane Greene, per Topkin. One could argue that Jimenez is the more appealing of the two given that he’s controlled through the 2023 season — Greene is controlled only through 2020 — but Jimenez is still a work in progress. Greene, meanwhile, is a first-time All-Star in the midst of a career season.

There’s ample reason for Tampa Bay to be interested in Jimenez, it should be noted. The 24-year-old was not long ago considered to be the Tigers’ future closer, thanks largely to a heater that averages 95.5 mph and a slider that drew plus grades on scouting reports. Jimenez has a pedestrian 4.48 ERA dating back to Opening Day 2018, but he also sports a 3.52 FIP with 12.1 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9 in 96 1/3 innings. This year’s 4.81 ERA is particularly underwhelming, but Jimenez has held opponents to three runs on six hits and two walks with 14 punchouts in 8 1/3 innings over the past month.

Neander emphasized to Toribio that the Rays never approach the deadline with the mentality that they “have to” make a trade (or multiple trades) but also spoke of a continued “opportunistic” mentality as July 31 looms. The Rays would be “OK” were the deadline to pass without a transaction taking place, per Neander, although recent history should signify such an outcome is unlikely. Tampa Bay has made at least one notable deal in four of the past five July trading seasons; David Price, Chris Archer, Tommy Pham, Kevin Jepsen, Steve Cishek, David DeJesus and Sergio Romo are among the recognizable veterans who’ve been involved in Rays swaps over the past half decade (more of them leaving Tampa Bay than arriving).

The Rays have been previously reported to have interest in adding multiple bullpen arms as well as a right-handed bat.

If Tampa makes the playoffs with their current roster no way they stand a chance against whoever they play. Yes their staff is pretty good but they have absolutely no depth. Their lineup also needs some reinforcements but that can change if they can acquire some of these dudes.

It’ll be as the WC if they make it, and winning a single game is nothing more than a crap shoot. They could beat anybody on any given day. It’s one of the reasons I utterly hate the WC.

Still early. 6.5 games behind means you gain 2-2-3 each month. Yanks went 16-3 from June till the last 2 losses against the Rays avg 7.4r/game (losses Yanks score 4 runs).
Rays want controllable players that help now & in the future. Rays have a few young bats still hitting well at Durham.

I love the one game WC format. If you can’t win the division, then you should be forced to have a rough road. There is a true advantage to winning the division.

Rays have a very good bullpen. They have 8 guys that have a k/9 over 10.

          Jimenez probably wouldn’t cost much.

The WC setup is dumb. If after 162 games you get into the playoffs you deserve more than 1 game.

I like WC more if they contract league. Get rid of some chronic loser franchise so division winning is more fair.
Good bye Mets, Marlins, Orioles, As, Angels. And maybe more.
Tampa stays because they innovate, innovate, innovate.
Hope they get Jimenez and fix him up to awesome like they did with arrow shooting reliever.

Jimenez is the 2019 version of Alvarado. Great for a stretch, then wildly inconsistent for a longer stretch. guess it’s good to give Cash options on how to blow a game.

I would think a Nate Lowe for Shane Greene would work. Lowe has value, in a second-division kind of way, and Greene is consistently inconsistent enough to rate that kind of prospect.

No way would Tiger’s make that deal for Greene. Plenty of teams will be out there bidding him up. However, the article clearly states Rays are more interested in Jimenez anyways. Even there, higher prospects would be required for Tiger’s to part ways with Jimenez.

Consistently inconsistent? He is 65 for 78 in save opportunities for an 83.3% Aroldis Chapman is at 89.7% Chapman is at 88.9% this year… Greene is at 91.7%.
Chapman is a superstar making over $17 mil a year. Greene is good at $4 mil a year.

Ah, to have a Fan Club….mother always said I’d reach great heights…..

All should note that Eric said “the more the DIVISION is in play”. But the division isn’t really in play, is it? Barring a cataclysm in NY, or the Sox morphing into their 2018 selves, it’s the Yanks to lose.

Likely the July 31 deadline will produce some type of selling/buying activities that will result in lower payroll. Which will shock (just SHOCK!) most fans.

That said, I wouldn’t underestimate them in the playoffs. Playoff baseball is weird, and Snell/Morton/Chirinos can be formidable.

Congrats on the fan club. Don’t follow enough to get why you’re getting some hate, but seems that poster has it in for you.

I wouldn’t say playoff baseball is weird, just a short sample. Anyone that gets in has a chance. In my opinion it’s a flawed system, but it’s what we’re used to.

He gets hate because he’s the worst kind of “fan.” No matter what the Rays do, he is unhappy 100% of the time and then proposes ludicrous suggestions of the ways he would have done it better. Fairly certain he is really a Sox or Yanks fan that just comes here to troll.

Are you sure that is enough for a rental mediocre DH only bat, a historically inconsistent bullpen arm, and a TBD bullpen arm? Why not include Franco, McKay, and Meadows too?

you would have to be clinically insane to make that trade, Franco is the best prospect in the minor leagues, meadows is having a breakout year and is an all-star, and in McKay’s debut, he took a perfect game into the 6th

Has Honeywell even played in 2 years?

Solak is being blocked at 2B and OF. Already 24, decent but not spectacular numbers in AAA this year.

Underwhelming numbers from Banda who profiles more like a reliever based on scouting reports. I think Tampa can survive that loss.

I agree. There’s only one pitcher I can think of I’d have traded Honeywell for and that’s Buhler, W. and that was when Walker was healthy and had more control. Honestly they should have traded Wendle, Robertson, and Choi in the off-season, and Cron halfway through the year. Cron to the Yankees cost them money and gives the Rays a rh’ed bat, while receiving more than Gallegos (Gallegos goes for Voit) as Cron was more proven. The other piece might not have been much but would be more than the piece acquired by the Cardinals. Voit doesn’t crater in the 2nd half like Cron potentially moving the Rays into the playoffs last year.

For Greene , Jimenez and Castellanos I would hope Cronenworth and Wong would be part of the deal. Cronenworth is from Michigan and went to U of M. They are both left handed hitting INFers that are doing well at AAA. In their mid 20’s and could be moved up this year. They are blocked by numerous prospects in the Ray system. Franco, Brujan, Fox, Solak, Walls, Frank, Grey, Pie and Marte are all younger infielders and ranked higher than them.
Yarbrough and DeLeon could be included. They were both top prospects but have since been stuck at AAA.
