Yankees, Astros Pursuing Madison Bumgarner, Zack Wheeler

By Connor Byrne | July 31, 2019 at 12:33pm CDT

The Yankees and Astros, two American League superpowers, continue their pursuit of high-profile starting pitchers. Both teams are in on Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner and Mets righty Zack Wheeler, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets. The Astros are also “focused” on Diamondbacks southpaw Robbie Ray, per Jon Morosi of MLB.com. Ray has been on the Yankees’ radar of late, too.

The Astros and Yankees are among the teams on Bumgarner’s limited no-trade list, but that doesn’t mean the pending free agent would block a deal to either club. Of course, it’s not a sure thing the playoff-contending Giants will even move Bumgarner, a franchise icon, by today’s deadline. They’ve been telling teams that they plan to keep him and closer Will Smith, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

This is the second time this week the Astros have been prominently connected to Bumgarner and Wheeler. As is the case with Bumgarner, Wheeler’s a 29-year-old soon-to-be free agent. While Wheeler may be the top trade candidate in baseball, the Mets aren’t guaranteed to part with him. They’ve made something of a charge up the standings of late, and seem prepared to retain Wheeler if they don’t get the type of return they’re seeking for the flamethrower. And whether the Mets would even trade Wheeler to the hated Yankees is also in question.

Good bet… but if he wants a crack at another ring or two, he should find a way out of that once beautiful city.

My teams app states Astros and Giants are talking Rojas for Bumgarner, plus some lower level prospects.

Joshua Rojas, currently hitting .310/..402/.586 for the Astros’ AAA club. Good pop and speed, doesn’t strike out much, fairly talented LH hitter.

I’m unfamiliar with him. Madbum isn’t going without a little pain for the other side. Seems a little low to me. I thought it would take a prospect as high as Beer. I’ll take it though!

Probably won’t happen. The giants are waiting for a team to overpay by saying they want to hold on to their pitchers. Meaning that a team would almost have to overpay similarly to how the Braves overpayed for Chris Martin in order to get their pitchers.

As if you know what your talking about. Allard isn’t very good and there’s a reason why he hasn’t gotten an opportunity this year.

A player like that will not shake Bumgarner loose. If they do that trade, San Francisco will explode.

San Fran has already exploded? It’s become a real hole city. Trading MadBum might put them over the top. Every team should just leave it alone.

2 months of Bumgarner on a mediocre year is only worth a team’s #22 prospect. If the Giants don’t know that then they get to keep him, miss the playoffs and lose him to free agency in two months for nothing.

Maybe replace Urquidy for Valdez or Perez, but asking for the Stros 4th/5th outfielder for one of the top 20 pitchers in the league doesn’t seem like too much to ask

Based on fielding independent metrics, he’s a top 30 pitcher in the game. Based on raw stuff, he’s probably top 20.

23rd in xFIP, 22nd in fWAR, 22nd in K/9, 14th in BB/9 among pitchers with a K/9 greater than 9, maybe he’s top 25 instead of top 20, but he’s their number 3 right now easily. He’s also certainly going to improve with Houston.

Straw isn’t a prospect. I don’t know if he’s a future star but he will help a team win a playoff game or two with his speed alone. He’s a versatile defender with a good bat at the MLB Level. Straw should have a lot of value. I don’t see the Astros giving him up unless it’s for a good SP with a few years of control. Put a guy like Fisher in there and you might have a deal.

Surprised you would rather trade Fisher who was a top 100 prospect not too long ago than Straw. Fisher I feel like has the speed and defense to impact the game as well, and if I remember right, he scored the game winning run as a pinch runner in that marathon WS game. Mets, additionally, don’t need another LHH outfielder.

Straw and Fisher are similar players but there is a reason that Straw is currently on the 25 and Fisher is in AAA.

Giants don’t really have any incentive to trade him for anything but impact prospects. The Stroman return doesn’t get a deal done.

I’d gladly trade Toronto Wheeler for the two prospects the Mets sent to them for Stroman. People are down on those two prospects, but Richardson’s #’s compare favorably to Syndergaard at 19 and the kid is only 18. He is 4 years away from the majors, so A LOT can still go wrong. Kay is likely a mid to back of rotation guy or upside reliever. With how stingy clubs have been with moving cost-controlled players, I think Kay has some value bc his floor is decently high, he just doesn’t have nearly the season of Richardson.

Still believe the Red Birds are in the starting pitching market, although my guess is they are aiming more for Ray. They had better get someone of quality or the fan base will come unglued.

I would rather the Yanks get Ray or Boyd. Severino will b back. Happ or CC needs replaced. Move one of them to the long reliever and get a true mid rotation starter. Sevy, Paxton, Tanaka and one of Ray or Boyd would look pretty good. Kinda would like to c them get Sanchez from the Jays for cheap too. And split the 5th game with Sanchez and either Happ or CC. Give the pen alittle break every 5th night. Because I will have Happ or CC as the third pitcher that night too.

As long as the Yankees are sitting in first place, CC, when he gets back from the IL, will keep starting. That’s just how the Yankees operate out of respect for his farewell tour. Tanaka and Paxton don’t inspire any confidence in me especially for the postseason. Severino is an unknown at this point. Happ is crap. German is probably the only rotation bright spot but his innings may be limited down the stretch.

The Yankees will need to keep slugging their way and lean heavily on the bullpen to keep winning games unfortunately.

Whoever wants Ray is going to have to part with MLB ready players. DBacks want the same style of deal as the Goldy trade, where they got Carson Kelly and Luke Weaver. Clint Frazier would be a good piece from NYY, or Derek Fisher from Houston.

Wheeler,Ramos (especially with Sanchez hurt ) and Familia to the Yanks for Andujar,Loiasiga and Florial.
Yanks are desperate for pitching gotta give to get.
Than Diaz to LAD for Will Smith and May.
These 2 trades help the Mets in Cf,C,Sp,Bp and (3b for next year).

I think Ramos is probably neutral value because his bat has been pretty good this year, it’s just he has been a below avg receiver of the ball, both in calling a game and catching skills.

Familia right now is a good bounce-back candidate, but eating $2m-$4m to move him would probably be needed. I’m pretty surprised teams haven’t asked for Wilson, who is probably the safer option, but not quite the ceiling of Familia…but much less chance of the Jeuryis Rollercoaster Inning.

Ramos was traded for a PTBNL last year when he had a wRC+ of 131. It’s 91 this year and his defense has been bad.

i really think giants should move will smith and sam dyson. smith more than dyson but definitely smith. he seems highly likely to leave this offseason while giants could retain bumgarner who they will surely need next year and the year after. they can replace smith now and the upcoming seasons. plus smith has not been that good since the all star break, or at least as good with several games where he has gotten in trouble. take the prospects for will smith

I hope the Yanks get MadBum. I’m just not sure what the cost would be. I doubt Frazier or Garcia would be included for a rental. I just wonder if they’d ship Florial out if they had to. You have to trade something of value. They won’t just give him away. I guess the question too is what the Giants are looking for. Close to ready talent, or upside guys even if they are a couple of years away.

Beltran hit well for the Giants for those few weeks they had him, but it was a steep price to pay. They were desperate for an outfielder at that point if I remember correctly. Some things never seem to change, unless there’s someone named Bonds in the outfield
