Adalberto Mondesi Injures Shoulder, Done For Year

By Dylan A. Chase | September 22, 2019 at 6:31pm CDT

Amidst a 100-loss season, Royals fans are likely ready to pack things in with an eye toward Spring Training 2020–unfortunately, their season won’t end with a bit more bad news, as it appears promising young shortstop Adalberto Mondesi reinjured his left shoulder in today’s loss to the Twins. While the severity of the injury isn’t yet known, Manager Ned Yost told MLB.com’s Jeff Flanagan that Mondesi’s season is over with only five games left to play (link).

Mondesi’s left shoulder already forced him to miss nearly two months of action in 2019, as a subluxation suffered on July 17 truncated his second season as a full-time starter. The 24-year-old was reintegrated into the lineup when rosters expanded on Sept. 1, but he will apparently be headed for a little more rest and recovery.

Although the smooth-fielding Angeleno logged just an 81 wRC+ across 442 plate appearances this year, his campaign wasn’t without its highlights. For one, he tied with Arizona’s Eduardo Escobar for the MLB lead in triples with 10 and logged 43 stolen bases in just 101 games. Defensively, Mondesi logged a nice +9 DRS figure in 800-plus innings at short this season. 2020 will mark Kansas City’s last year of team control over Mondesi before arbitration proceedings begin in 2021.

Why is Angeleno mentioned at the start of the last paragraph?

It’s not an obvious typo to you? You couldn’t figure it out by context?

Well, Mondesi is from Los Angeles and an Angeleno is a “native or inhabitant of Los Angeles” according to Google so is it a weird choice of words, sure, but I’m not sure that it wasn’t intentional

Heal up and be back fully healthy and ready to go next year. Really excited to see what Mondi can become if he can stay healthy. Hopefully this shoulder doesn’t become a thing.

his health is always going to become a concern I think . Some fans may have hated Alcides Escobar Due to the fact that he played every day, but he stayed healthy for the most part.

I don’t think we can expect mondesi to play all 162 games when he’s healthy, But maybe he could play 155. I think we hurt more this year from hunter dozier’s time on the injury list, due to the fact that this was a breakout year for him. I’m looking forward to a healthy grinning Salvy being back next year.

“2020 will mark Kansas City’s last year of team control over Mondesi before arbitration proceedings begin in 2021”

In this case, he’s still under team control. He just gets a pay raise.

Poorly worded I agree, I actually thought he was a free agent at first glance from that reading and knew it had to be an error.

Done for the year? So, he won’t play all week. Way to add some sensationalism. I don’t follow basketball or hockey. If someone gets injured the last week of December, do they say they’re out for the year?

Well he is done playing Major League Baseball for the year.

PED users tend to have more injuries than the average player.

I don’t know. Used to agree, but those PED guys were all playing 150-155 games a year. Now guys are like glass!
